Outstanding Tenggren Concept Painting for
“Pinocchio”
A wonderful pen, ink and watercolor by Gustaf Tenggren that was used as a concept piece for Pinocchio. The painting is 11x14.5 inches on
heavy paper and is signed. Tenggren was born in Sweden in 1896 and then was brought up in a rural setting by his grandfather from whom
he learned woodcarving and painting. From 1917-26 he illustrated an annual of Swedish folklore (Bland Tomar och Troll) following in the paintsteps
of John Bauer who performed the same job preceding Tenggren. This work and series of influences led him into the world of dark
and mysterious fantasy that permeated
the Nordic world. In 1936 Disney hired
him to bring some of that Northern
European sensibility and feeling to the
studio’s work and he surely did that. He
worked on Little Hiawatha (1937), The
Old Mill (1937-Academy Award Winner),
and The Ugly Duckling (1939), as well
as his outstanding work on the concept
developments for Snow White. Then,
obviously drawing upon his youthful
experiences at the feet of his grandfather
back in Sweden, he bought the ideas of
Pinocchio to life. Geppetto is obvious and
surely the village nestled in the mountains
was home. The multiplane camera, that
was tested in The Old Mill, was used with
marvelous results in Pinocchio and we
have one of Disney’s outstanding artistic
accomplishments. This painting gives us
a view of Pinocchio tied to a giant rock,
deep under the water, surrounded by
mystified fishes. They all seemed equally
surprised and unsure what to do next.
Pinocchio, as envisioned by Tenggren is a compelling story that has quite mature and evocative ideas and development. This painting helped
Disney see the character and how he reacted to such difficult events. A great artist whose concept development was special has given us here
a notable painting that is a real treasure. $75,000
