MANAGING COMMUNITY RELATIONS IN THE OIL AND GAS
INDUSTRY
COURSE DESCRIPTION
There had been an increasing awareness of the social responsibility of
business in the last twenty years. From Oklahoma to Owerri, from Saudi
Arabia to South Korea, from Niger Delta to New Delhi, and from Lagos to
London communities that had hitherto lived in peace and harmony have
become restive a sa result of perceived failure of multinational
corporations operating in their areas, to live up to their social
responsibility.
Hence, the focus of business has gradually shifted from ‘profit orientation’
to ‘people orientation’, even as the local communities continue their
agitation of increased involvement of businesses in the development of
roads, schools, hospitals, etc. The workshop on Managing Community
21

quality of the social relations of production in the Oil and Gas producing
STRATEGIC PLANNING TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP (SPTW)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The viability of organizations, more than ever, is shaped by focused
planning and disciplined action. The pressure of daily operational
demand, unexpected crises and volatile market may keep company
executives and managers so consumed with running the business that
there is little time or thought given to planning. This, in addition to the
common perception that strategic planning is an executive adventure,
26
eserved for those companies large enough to afford the amount of time
and money needed to produce five-year strategic plans. Even with all this
expense, many of these plans may end up on a shelf, never to be
seriously considered again. Yet effectiveness in strategic thinking and
planning are critical to success in business and life. Strategic
effectiveness is achieved by setting the right long-term priorities and
implementing them. Many of the business outcomes of the 1980s, the
great success and failures, gains and losses, growths and declines hinged
in part, upon the degree of strategic efficiency and effectiveness an
enterprise/organization achieved or otherwise.
Obviously, an organization produces strategic effectiveness when it
directly and forcefully implements prioritized goals in its operations. To
do this, managers must develop the kind of strategic capabilities needed
to lead the company to greater financial and operational success.
It is in recognition of this that this programme is developed to inculcate in
participants the needed strategic capabilities for driving an organization to
greater financial and operational success.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:
Analyse Strategic Planning Technology
Develop Strategic Plan and implement prioritized goals for strategic
effectiveness
Identify priority issues which are fundamental to the development of
an effective and comprehensive business strategy
REVENUE GENERATION AND TAX ADMINISTRATION
COURSE DESCRIPTION
A major instrument for economic development is revenue. The
mobilization, management and the end use to which it is put, combine
to accelerate economic growth and development, or in the contrary, it
leads to economic stagnation and poverty.
In view of the poor economic position of state and local governments,
coupled with the lack of corresponding increase in Federal Government
allocations, generating revenue and efficient tax administration should
become the focus of State and Local Governments in order to meet the
growing cost of public expenditure and survival of states.
Much is definitely expected from administrators and revenue generation
officers. It is therefore, imperative for officers saddled with such
responsibilities to be thorough and exact in their jobs. It is for this
reason that relevant knowledge and skills are prerequisite. This
workshop is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills
WATER QUALITY, WASTE AND HEALTH HAZARD MANAGEMENT
COURSE (WOW&HHMC)
COURSE DESRIPTION
Water is a very essential commodity. Ironically, it could also be the
source of disaster, for two very important reasons. First, poor quality of
water could lead to incidence of disease and even death. Secondly, the
more water that is used, the more waste that is generated and poor
handling of this waster can adversely affect the health of the people.
For these reasons and more, engineers, administrators, health officers,
etc need to have a much clearer understanding of the diseases related
to water quality and wastes, the health consequences and how to
manage them.
70
OBJECTIVES
