In 10 Weeks, Find a
Stress-Free, Pain-Free Life!
Now in its fifth year, the Stress and Pain Free Living Program at Henry Ford
Health System offers community members with chronic health conditions —
such as back pain, headaches, anxiety, high blood pressure, and obesity —
the opportunity to take control of stress and pain.
“I went to the program with my arms crossed because I couldn’t believe this
could actually help,” says Connie Franklin, a Medical Charge Analyst at
Henry Ford Health System.
Connie has suffered from cerebral palsy, degenerative arthritis, and
stenosis of the spine. After receiving an interoffice email about the
program, she decided to give it a try.
“I was 54 years old and walking around like my aunt Lulu, who is 79. I had
three canes and a mobilizer at the time. I was looking for a better quality of
life for myself,” Connie says. “Participating in the program helped me let go
of a lot of personal stuff I didn’t know was compounding my physical health.”
“We help people identify any dysfunctional patterns in their lives contributing
to their pain and stress, and help them correct those patterns in a way that lets
them find substantial relief and can even eliminate certain conditions,” says Robert
A. Levine, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Integrative Wellness and Integrative
Wellness Research at Henry Ford Health System.
The 10-week program teaches people how to:
• Relax overly tense muscles in the body
• Release mental tension that contributes to stress and anxiety
• Correct dysfunctional walking, sitting or standing, and other daily activities
• Control their bodies’ responses to stress
Within just a month, Connie saw a reduction in pain and stress. She was
able to reduce her use of pain medication drastically, give up her
walking-assistance devices, and even take a five-day hiking trip
without using her medications.
In addition, the movement routines used in the program
helped Connie lose about 20 pounds.
Start Your
Journey to
Better Living
Today!
The Stress and Pain Free
Living Program is offered free of
charge to eligible individuals in
the Detroit-metro area. To find
out how to take part in this
life-altering program, visit
stressandpainfreeliving.com
and take a quick
informational survey.
“We teach people to do simple movements designed to
recognize muscles that are in excess contraction and burning
excess energy, and then release those muscles to become relaxed,”
explains Levine. “Relaxed muscles burn less energy, which helps
people experience less pain and fatigue and feel energized.”

General Manager, Southgate Super Vision Center
4
Jason Johnson knows that the
Southgate Super Vision Center,
where he’s General Manager, is
not only part of a company. It’s
also part of a community. Reaching
out to his neighbors is important
to Jason, a Downriver native.
Recently, InFocus talked with
Jason about how he uses his job
to make a difference.
Q:
What was your
first taste of
community outreach at Henry
Ford OptimEyes (HFO)?
A:
All the HFO offices are
active in raising money for
Camp Erin Detroit. This is a
weekend-long camp for children
and teens who have experienced
the death of someone they love.
When I first joined the company,
back in 2009, I had a lifelong
friend, the mother of two little
girls, who was struggling with
cancer. She later passed away. It
meant a lot to think that our
raffles, bake sales, and other
fund-raisers were helping
families such as hers.
Q:
I heard that
you found a
creative way to get
your coworkers
involved. What did
you do?
A:
In 2010, when I was in
my previous position at
the Westland Super Vision
Center, I pledged to let the staff
shave my head if we raised a
certain amount of money for
Camp Erin. They made sure we
hit that goal!
Q:
A:
Have you started any
new community
projects at Southgate?
Last year, we participated in
Movember for the first time.
This is a month-long event
to raise awareness and
money for men’s cancer.
All the men in our office,
myself included, grew
moustaches. We also gave fake
moustaches to everyone who made
a donation, and we posted their
pictures on the wall. It was a
lot of fun for a worthy cause.
The proceeds went to the
Henry Ford Josephine Ford
Cancer Center – Downriver.
Q:
A:
Why is giving back so
important to you?
It’s the way I was raised. I
was adopted by parents
who already had two biological
children, but who decided to
adopt two more. I grew
up in a Downriver
community where
people really care
about their neighbors.
Now I’m working for a
company that encourages
its employees to get involved.
I consider myself very fortunate,
and I’m glad to have the chance to
give something back.
Your Medical Records:
Now Completely Paperless!
When you think of your medical
records, what do you see? If you
imagine a stack of charts and
forms stuffed into a folder, think
again. Henry Ford OptimEyes
(HFO) is now one of the first
large optometric group practices
in Michigan to use an electronic
medical record (EMR). This
state-of-the-art technology
reduces errors and improves care,
while offering a greener
alternative to paper records.
Fewer Errors, Greater Efficiency
Moving to all-digital records
provides huge benefits for both
doctors and patients.
“Eye care is very numbersdriven,”
says Dr. Larry Olson,
Optometrist in Charge at the
HFO Troy Super Vision Center.
“The EMR allows us to do a
much better job of recording
information and greatly reduces
the risk of human error.”
The EMR also enables a more
efficient doctor’s office.
“We can eliminate a lot of
confusion that might have been
caused by being unable to read
someone’s handwriting or locate
records,” says Dr. Jackie Youn,
Optometrist in Charge at the HFO
Westland Super Vision Center.
“Now, everything we need is at
our fingertips.”
The ability to view a patient’s
entire medical history also helps
HFO doctors see trends more clearly.
“Some of my patient records
date back decades and can be
very complex,” Dr. Olson adds.
“With the EMR, I can pull up
your complete record and see,
at a glance, how things have
changed over the years. It’s
much more efficient than trying
to scan through pages and pages
of paper charts.”
Why You’ll Dig Digital
EMRs also make things faster
and easier for patients. For
example, HFO patients no longer
have to rely on handwritten
prescriptions. Now, our doctors
enter your prescriptions digitally
and transmit them directly to
the pharmacy.
Another major benefit is that
medical records no longer need to
be transferred between HFO
locations. All HFO doctors now
see exactly the same information.
The EMR will soon be linked with
the larger Henry Ford Health
System (HFHS) as well.
“There is a lot of overlap
between HFO and HFHS,” says
Dr. Olson. “A patient may be
referred to us for a diabetic eye
exam, for example, or we may
refer someone out for surgery.
In the near future, every doctor
in the system involved in the
patient’s care will have the same
complete picture of that patient.”
Trees Love It, Too
The new EMR is also eco-friendly.
Traditional medical records
generate about 10 to 12 pieces of
paper for every patient exam. The
EMR uses almost no paper at all.
That’s better for the environment,
and it reduces the need to store
thousands of paper records in the
office — freeing up space for new
instruments or exam rooms.
HFO’s New
Covergirl and Timberland Frames
Ever wondered what would happen if
you combined the soft, feminine colors
of classic Covergirl makeup with the
latest breakthrough technology in
crafting eyeglass frames . . . to produce
a striking new look for girls and women
who wear prescription lenses?
The answer requires only a single
word, according to eyewear expert Arta
Isovski: “Wow!”
“Everybody knows about the
‘Covergirl look’ in makeup,” says
Isovski, Senior Brand Manager at trendy
Marcolin in New York City. “For millions
of fashion-conscious girls and women,
Covergirl means soft, fluid gracefulness
combined with bright colors and subtler
pastels to produce a uniquely
feminine effect.
“And now that same exciting look —
along with the latest in frame design
and manufacturing — has begun to
transform girls’ and women’s eyewear.
For anybody who wants to look terrific
in a pair of glasses, Marcolin’s recent
design breakthrough will be very good
news indeed.”
Updated recently, the new Designed
2 Fit line of Marcolin frames is the
result of a savvy collaboration between
the traditional Covergirl style and newer
design elements aimed at both
highlighting and softening larger facial
features. “These new frames feature
specially designed wider fronts and
expanded temple lengths to create
an aura of understated elegance,”
says Isovski.
“The really exciting thing about the
design breakthrough is the way it lets us
craft frames that emphasize the
wearer’s femininity,” she adds. “Thanks
to these new production values, younger
and older women alike can now own
highly affordable eyewear with eyecatching
appeal.”
Along with the new Covergirl-inspired
Designed 2 Fit line, Marcolin recently
unveiled a wilderness-oriented set
of Timberland frames for men.
Crafted especially for the
outdoorsman who loves to spend time
paddling a kayak or hiking a mountain
trail, the new frames “are all about
celebrating your relationship with the
environment,” says Isovski. “This exciting
line is for the outdoors enthusiast who’s
looking for eyewear that will last, while
also enhancing his vision as he chases a
rainbow trout along a rocky stream or
builds a fire in a forest clearing.
“The Timberland frames are both
comfortable and classic in shape.
They’re also durable, while leaving tons
of room for personal style. With their
longer temples and their laid-back but
stylish flair, this new collection of
Timberlands will speak volumes about
the men who wear them in the wild!”
FROM OUR
PARTNERS IN
OPHTHALMOLOGY
Diabetes and Your Eyes:
Focus on Retinopathy
Diabetes is the leading cause
of blindness in the U.S. It
increases the risk for eye
conditions such as glaucoma
and cataracts, as well as
diabetic retinopathy.
“Retinopathy, a common diabetesrelated
eye condition, affects the
retina — the light-sensitive tissue at
the back of the eye,” says Henry Ford
ophthalmologist Robert M. Levine,
M.D. “At first, patients may not have
symptoms. But over time, their vision
gets worse if the eyes’ blood vessels
swell and leak fluid or abnormal
vessels grow on the retina.”
If diabetic retinopathy is
identified early (see sidebar), vision
loss can be prevented. Controlling
your blood sugar, blood pressure,
and cholesterol levels can help.
However, if you have
retinopathy that’s already
progressed, the good news is
Henry Ford offers the latest
treatments, including:
• Injections — Two injectable
medications, Lucentis and Avastin,
have been shown in studies to
successfully slow the growth of
abnormal vessels that leak blood
and fluid behind the retina.
• Lasers — Advanced laser
technology can shrink abnormal
blood vessels.
• Surgery — A procedure called
vitrectomy may be performed to
remove excess blood and fluid.
Henry Ford Medical Group eye
surgeons use an approach that
doesn’t require stitches and that
results in better outcomes than
traditional surgery.
Henry Ford has one of the
largest centers in the country for
the screening, treatment, and
research of diabetes-related eye
diseases. To learn more or to
Catching
Retinopathy Early
In most cases, diabetic retinopathy can
be detected during a comprehensive dilated
eye exam. The American Academy of
Ophthalmology recommends the following
screening schedule:
> Type 1 diabetes: within five years of being
diagnosed with diabetes, then annually
> Type 2 diabetes: at the time you are
New Progressive
Lenses Provide
‘Astonishing’
Power, Say Wearers
no lines!!
It’s official: HFO’s recently launched Ideal Advanced progressive lenses are poised
to become the gold standard for clarity and accuracy among savvy consumers.
{
*
“These newly engineered lenses
aren’t just better than the older
versions — they’re terrifically
better,” says Bill Dufort, HFO’s
longtime Director of Laboratory
Operations. “Thanks to an
exciting breakthrough in lens
design, your vision can now
shift effortlessly from one range
of distance to the next while
wearing glasses.”
According to the HFO optics
expert, these powerful new
progressives move the
prescription area of the lens
closer to your eye by putting it
on the back of the lens instead
of the front.
The result, says Dufort, is
“enhanced clarity, accuracy, and
visual comfort” that has
amazed eyeglass wearers in
recent tests.
“These new Ideal Advanced
lenses just came off the drawing
board a year ago,” says Dufort,
“but we’re already hearing from
amazed wearers who say they’ve
never experienced anything like
this before.
“The great thing about this
new lens-crafting technology is
the way it lets your eyes move
effortlessly from near tasks,
such as reading, to mid-range
tasks, such as working on a
computer, to long distance.”
Another benefit: wider fields
of vision in each distance range.
“The people who’ve been
wearing these new progressives
in tests have been astonished,”
says Dufort. “The typical
comment we’re hearing is:
I can’t believe the difference;
the wider viewing area is
remarkable for both
near and far vision.”
Designed without the
unsightly lines that appear on
traditional bifocals, progressive
lenses are increasingly
popular among modern,
fashion-forward consumers
who want to look good
while seeing well.
“The new Ideal
Advanced lenses combine
impeccable design with
state-of-the-art
fabrication methods,”
says Dufort. “The
results will amaze
wearers when they
get their first look
through these
new lenses.”
Available now, and
specially priced to be
affordable, the Ideal
!
Advanced progressives are
going to be in great demand,
says Dufort. “They say that
seeing is believing, and when
it comes to these new
lenses, that certainly
rings true!”
1-800-EYE-CARE: The Only Number
You Need for Healthy Eyes
Have you scheduled your annual eye exam yet? Making
your appointment at any Henry Ford OptimEyes (HFO)
location is as easy as calling 1-800-EYE-CARE. This
one number connects you to the HFO Contact Center.
“The Contact Center is a single point of contact for
patients,” says Gail Elias, Finance Director of HFO.
“You’ll reach a real person, located at the HFO
headquarters in Madison Heights.”
Quick & Convenient
When you call the Contact Center, one of our
enthusiastic, friendly representatives will help you
schedule an appointment at any of the 17 HFO locations.
“If you’re a new patient, the Contact Center can help you
find the location nearest you,” Elias says.
A few days before your appointment, you’ll receive
a reminder call from the Contact Center. What’s more,
if you have an emergency and need a same-day
appointment, the Contact Center can schedule that, too.
“The Contact Center is also committed to making
sure that high-risk patients, such as those with
diabetes and glaucoma, receive their annual eye
exams,” Elias says. For these people, an annual exam is
crucial to prevent vision loss.
Open 7 Days a Week
You can reach a representative at the Contact Center
any day of the week. The hours are Monday through
Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and
Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Having one central place for making appointments
increases the likelihood that patients receive the eye
care they need,” Elias says. “It’s another way that HFO is
committed to helping patients maintain healthy sight.”
