Jason Johnson knows that the
Southgate Super Vision Center,
where he’s General Manager, is
not only part of a company. It’s
also part of a community. Reaching
out to his neighbors is important
to Jason, a Downriver native.
Recently, InFocus talked with
Jason about how he uses his job
to make a difference.
Q:
What was your
first taste of
community outreach at Henry
Ford OptimEyes (HFO)?
A:
All the HFO offices are
active in raising money for
Camp Erin Detroit. This is a
weekend-long camp for children
and teens who have experienced
the death of someone they love.
When I first joined the company,
back in 2009, I had a lifelong
friend, the mother of two little
girls, who was struggling with
cancer. She later passed away. It
meant a lot to think that our
raffles, bake sales, and other
fund-raisers were helping
families such as hers.
Q:
I heard that
you found a
creative way to get
your coworkers
involved. What did
you do?
A:
In 2010, when I was in
my previous position at
the Westland Super Vision
Center, I pledged to let the staff
shave my head if we raised a
certain amount of money for
Camp Erin. They made sure we
hit that goal!
Q:
A:
Have you started any
new community
projects at Southgate?
Last year, we participated in
Movember for the first time.
This is a month-long event
to raise awareness and
money for men’s cancer.
All the men in our office,
myself included, grew
moustaches. We also gave fake
moustaches to everyone who made
a donation, and we posted their
pictures on the wall. It was a
lot of fun for a worthy cause.
The proceeds went to the
Henry Ford Josephine Ford
Cancer Center – Downriver.

A:
Why is giving back so
important to you?
It’s the way I was raised. I
was adopted by parents
who already had two biological
children, but who decided to
adopt two more. I grew
up in a Downriver
community where
people really care
about their neighbors.
Now I’m working for a
company that encourages
its employees to get involved.
I consider myself very fortunate,
and I’m glad to have the chance to
give something back.
