Before you take Metanx ® , read this <strong>Patient</strong> <strong>Prescribing</strong> <strong>Information</strong> (PPI). It tells you the most important<br />

things you need to know about Metanx ® . To learn more about how to take Metanx ® , please read the full<br />

Metanx ® <strong>Prescribing</strong> <strong>Information</strong>. Talk with your healthcare provider about any questions you have<br />

about Metanx ® and your medical condition.<br />

Why did my healthcare provider<br />

prescribe Metanx ® <br />

Healthcare providers prescribe Metanx ®<br />

to meet the special nutritional needs<br />

of people who have one or both of<br />

the following: 1<br />

• zReduced blood flow causing nerve damage<br />

in their hands, feet, or toes associated with<br />

diabetes. This nerve damage is called diabetic<br />

peripheral neuropathy (puh-RIFF-uh-rul nuh-<br />

RAH-puh-thee). It can cause pain and/or a loss<br />

of feeling in the affected areas<br />

• zUlcers on their legs and feet caused by<br />

diabetes and other conditions<br />

What is a medical food<br />

A medical food is specially<br />

formulated and must be used under<br />

the care of a healthcare provider.<br />

Some medical foods, such as Metanx ® , are in<br />

tablet form.<br />

A healthcare provider will prescribe a medical food<br />

to treat a disease or condition that causes people to<br />

have special nutritional needs.<br />

All ingredients of a medical food must be<br />

generally recognized as safe under guidelines<br />

set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).<br />

The ingredients must also meet general food safety<br />

and manufacturing standards.<br />

What is Metanx ® <br />

Tablets shown at actual size.<br />

Metanx ® is a medical food that you get by<br />

prescription from your healthcare provider. It is<br />

a tablet that you swallow. Metanx ® provides the<br />

nutrition that is needed to improve the health of<br />

your blood vessels and nerves. 2,3<br />

Each round, coated, purple Metanx ® tablet contains:<br />

• zL-methylfolate Calcium (as Metafolin ® ) 3 mg<br />

• zPyridoxal-5´-Phosphate 35 mg<br />

• zMethylcobalamin 2 mg<br />

What should I tell my<br />

healthcare provider<br />

before taking Metanx ® <br />

Metanx ® can affect the way<br />

some other medicines work.<br />

Tell your healthcare provider about all the<br />

medicines you take. These include prescription<br />

medicines, over-the-counter medicines,<br />

and dietary supplements.<br />

Who should NOT take Metanx ® <br />

There have been few reports of people having<br />

an allergic reaction to Metanx ® . Talk with your<br />

healthcare provider if you think you may be<br />

allergic to Metanx ® or to any of its ingredients.<br />

How do I take Metanx ® <br />

You must be under a healthcare<br />

provider’s care to take Metanx ® .<br />

The usual dose is 1 tablet taken<br />

twice each day. Your healthcare provider may<br />

have you take a different dose. Always follow<br />

your healthcare provider’s recommendation.<br />

How do I know if Metanx ®<br />

is working<br />

If you already have nerve damage,<br />

it may take some time before you<br />

notice that Metanx ® is working. After<br />

starting, on average people notice that Metanx ® is<br />

working within about 3 weeks. 4 Based on medical<br />

studies, people should take Metanx ® for at least<br />

6 months to have significant improvement. 4,5<br />

Every person will respond differently to Metanx ® .<br />

What are the possible side effects<br />

of Metanx ® <br />

The side effects of Metanx ® are about the same as<br />

those of a placebo. 5 A placebo is a tablet or liquid<br />

with no active medicine. A sugar pill is an<br />

example of a placebo. In rare cases, Metanx ®<br />

may cause mild stomach upset or rash. 1<br />
