FOOTY AND MATES STOKES LOVING HIS SECOND STINT AT UNLEY Few people realise that Cameron Stokes has been a big Sturt admirer since 2007. On the surface this would appear a tad peculiar for a guy who only made his SANFL debut for the Double Blues in Round One this year. Not to mention the fact he’s originally from Darwin, where he represented the Buffaloes in the NTFL, before being drafted by Hawthorn and spending the past three seasons in the AFL system. “Before I moved to Melbourne to play with the Hawks, I came over here (Adelaide) and played a few trial matches (with Sturt) in 2007, just after the National Under 18s,” said livewire Stokes, a member of the ’09 Indigenous All-Stars team that defeated Adelaide at TIO Stadium. “There were a few NT boys here who I got on well with and kept in contact with - Josh Cubillo, Patty Fittock and Charlie Sharples - which was one of the main reasons I came back.” It was another “Top Ender” who Stokes would spend time with and often be compared to during his time with the Hawks, who selected him with the 54th pick in the 2008 Rookie Draft - the mercurial Cyril Rioli. Stokes and Rioli had plenty in common. They played juniors together, their births are separated by just 12 days, both debuted for Hawthorn in Round One, 2008, they spent a lot of time together in their early days at Glenferrie, and their on-field flashiness, evasiveness, freakish 3flair and line-breaking speed are eerily similar. But their careers would veer in vastly different directions. While Rioli played every match in ’08, was the youngest member of the Hawks’ premiership team and has since become a household name, Stokes’ progress stalled due BY STEVE BARRETT to hamstring problems and reconstructions to his shoulder and knee, which eventually saw him delisted at the end of 2010 after 20 matches. “It was pretty disappointing; I tried to get (a career) going,” Stokes said. “Injuries are part of footy and you just have to deal with it. “After that (being delisted) I went back to Darwin and spent some time with my family after being away for a few years.” A couple of months later, Stokes received a call from Sturt operations manager Duane Massey to return to Unley. “Duane wanted me to move down and I thought it would be a good opportunity, so I stayed with Patty Fittock and Josh Cubillo for a week and thought I’d see how I go. “I enjoyed it and felt it would be a good idea to come back.” Stokes lives with Sharples and close mate, fellow AFL discard and off-season recruit Joe Anderson, while still spending time socially with Cubillo and Fittock. “Joe and I have known each other since we were young and our families are fairly close,” said Stokes, whose father’s cousin is Andrew McLeod. “We share the same management group and were looking to go somewhere together, so it’s worked out well. “It’s been great - I haven’t played with all those boys since’07, so I’ve enjoyed getting around them again.” Who do you think is the most skilled SANFL footballer currently If you could have any one player in the SANFL to hit a target for you who would it be Text us 0410 528 892 9
