RETURNING TO 

THE BIG GROUNDS

It was rather fitting that Norwood and Port Adelaide 

kickstarted season 2011 - and with AAMI Stadium as 

the venue, no less - for a number of reasons. 

In terms of flags won, those two sides are streets 

ahead as the most successful sides in SANFL history, 

so why not get the ball rolling with, historically, the 

competition’s two pre-eminent teams 

Not to mention the fact Magpies and the Redlegs 

share, arguably, the competition’s most intense and 

deepest rivalry, and - irrespective of ladder position - 

invariably draw healthy crowds. 

The fact Norwood and the Port opened 2011 at AAMI 

Stadium was significant because they were the last 

two SANFL teams to have tasted victory in minor 

round battles at West Lakes. 

On March 10, 2000 - which was also the first day 

of that season - the Legs downed West Adelaide by 

41 points at AAMI Stadium (then known as Football 

Park), while Port defeated Woodville-West Torrens 

by two goals in the other leg of that afternoon’s 

double-header. 

In something of a scheduling abnormality, the 2000 

SANFL campaign started with a Football Park doubleheader 

to avoid clashing with suburban cricket venues 

given the earlier start to the footy season - just a 

week into the start of autumn - due to the Sydney 

Olympic Games. 

While that day 11 years ago was a once-off for 

that year, purely to cater for the Olympics, the notion 

of West Lakes hosting minor round games was 

nothing novel.

held there, comprising a combination of AFL curtainraisers 

and stand-alone SANFL fixtures. 

A long hiatus followed as the League, in 2001, 

focused deliberately on returning to suburban 

grounds, but now minor round action has returned 

to headquarters. 

When Norwood edged past Port in a thriller before 

lunchtime in Round One this year, it was not only the 

first minor round SANFL clash at AAMI Stadium in a 

fraction more than 11 years, but it was the first SANFL 

curtain-raiser in almost 12 years, dating back to late- 

June 1999 when, coincidentally, Norwood and Port 

triumphed in consecutive weeks. 

The Redlegs beat Central District by 28 points on the 

same day that dual-reigning AFL premier Adelaide 

edged past Collingwood by five points, then the 

following week Port Magpies emphatically triumphed 

over Glenelg by 36 points in the curtain-raiser to the 

Power-Hawthorn clash which Port won by 20 points. 

For the Magpies’ reigning best-and-fairest winner 

Steven Summerton, the curtain-raiser against Norwood 

in March was the first time he’d played at AAMI 

Stadium since his days in the State Under 16s.

“It was good to play on a different ground and have a 

big crowd,” Summerton said. 

“It was a great experience for the younger players 

who haven’t played on a stadium like that before.” 

While Summerton’s first-choice preference is always 

to play at Alberton Oval, he does see the advantages of 

playing at the bigger arenas, such as AAMI (where the 

Magpies play twice) and Adelaide Oval (where they 

will play once). 

“Playing at AAMI gives us a chance to get used to the 

ground,” he said. 

“If we do make the Finals, hopefully we’ll know how 

to play it better.” 

In Round 10, Sturt will play the season’s second AFL 

curtain-raiser at AAMI Stadium, also against Port, as 

well as four fixtures at Adelaide Oval. 

Talented Double Blues defender Patty Fittock always 

looks forward to such occasions. 

“It’s exciting playing these big games,” he said. 

“I was lucky enough to play in front of a big crowd in 

the (2009) Grand Final and I know a few of the 

younger boys coming through at the moment are really 

looking forward to playing there.” 

Fittock, who started 2011 in the Reserves following a 

delayed pre-season due to shoulder and knee 

problems, is no stranger to Adelaide Oval either. 

“I played in the last Finals Series they played at 

Adelaide Oval and played a couple of night games 

there,” Fittock said. 

“We also trained there last year to get used to playing 

on a bigger deck with better lights and to get off Unley 

Oval during the week, which gets pretty cut up during 

the wetter days. 

“Footy at Adelaide Oval always has a good 

atmosphere and we’d expect a fair few people to 

come along.” 

Aside from the two AFL curtain-raisers at AAMI, 

picturesque Adelaide Oval hosts six minor round 

matches in total in 2011, the most played at the ground 

since 2006 when 11 matches were held there. 

Contrastingly, in the four-year period from 2007-10, a 

total of just seven minor round matches were played at 

Adelaide Oval, including none in both 2008 and 2010 

due to construction work on the now complete 

western grandstand on the members’ side. 

“Friday night, Adelaide Oval - that’s as exciting as it 

gets and I always really look forward to it,” said gun 

Norwood midfielder Brett Zorzi, who watched from the 

stands as his Redlegs downed Port in the Round One 

AAMI Stadium curtain-raiser before returning in Round 

Two, helping his side comfortably triumph over Sturt at 

Adelaide Oval. 

“You know you’re going to play on a good surface in 

front of a big crowd and at a ground that you don’t get 

to play on that often, which makes it truly special. 

“A few years ago, double-headers at Adelaide Oval 

were really exciting - they brought more people to the 

ground and created a Finals-type atmosphere. 

“It’s even exciting for the old fellas like myself … 

playing on a great deck, both teams get really pumped 

up for the occasion and it’s got that extra bit to it, it’s a 

neutral game and it’s more special.” 

The Redlegs’ fixturing ensured they would get a 

very good look at the two big grounds - four of their 

first six matches are scheduled at either West Lakes 

or Adelaide. 

“Most of the games at AAMI and Adelaide Oval are 

like Finals games,” Zorzi said. 

“I have to admit, for me Adelaide Oval is more 

appealing than AAMI, but a lot of the guys have been 

saying the pace of the game goes up at both those 

grounds and is similar to Finals footy. 

“Playing there not only allows you to familiarise 

yourself with the surroundings knowing the Finals 

are played there, but the atmosphere, the buzz and 

the excitement is great and the players check the 

calendar in advance and look forward to playing on 

the big grounds.”

PROTECTING THE HEAD

discussion surrounding an article 

written by former Melbourne 

Demon Russell Robertson. 

Talk-back radio and football 

television shows have all discussed 

the health issues surrounding 

concussion in football. There are a 

couple of things that interested me 

in this which SANFL clubs, like the 

AFL clubs, will need to take heed. 

As soon as there is contact to the 

head clubs will now have to always 

err on the side of caution, even 

though players will want to go back 

on the ground. Legally there is the 

opportunity for players to sue the 

club if in later life they should 

encounter health problems. We 

have seen two players seek 

damages already – how many more 

are there out there 

Robertson goes onto suggest that 

all players should wear helmets. 

How ridiculous! 

Can you imagine going to the 

football on a Saturday afternoon 

and seeing 36 guys running around 

all wearing helmets Standing in 

the outer it would be very difficult 

to determine the difference between 

players and for the commentators it 

would become a nightmare. 

While there is no question 

concussion is a most serious injury, 

let’s be reasonable. Both the SANFL 

and AFL have, in consultation with 

medical professionals, adopted a 

policy that states concussed 

players should not return to the 

playing area. But these are 

guidelines only and the decision 

still rests with the team doctors. In a 

good sign, most doctors have long 

been and still are standing up and 

preventing players from playing on.

believe players should be allowed 

to return after being knocked out if 

they pass a concussion test 

I ventured down South on the 

weekend to watch the quadruple 

header at Hickinbotham Oval. 

Firstly, it was so entertaining to 

have all four grades playing on the 

one day, at the same venue. So 

many of the young kids stuck 

around to watch their League 

heroes do battle. 

There were a number of junior 

players playing in helmets. I wonder 

if the added attention to head 

injuries will lead to further players 

donning the head gear. Would you 

wear or encourage your children to 

wear a helmet if they were running 

onto the field 

Spitting the dummy 

Steve in Wynn Vale wrote into The 

Cave last week expressing his 

disgust at Richmond full-forward 

Jack Riewoldt’s behaviour 

when being told he would not 

be going back on the field after 

being concussed. 

Now I was disappointed to see 

that once again this week Jack 

carry-on like a pork chop a number 

of times during his side’s loss to 

Hawthorn. Come on Jack giving the 

finger as you’re running off the 

field, that’s teenage stuff! 

I was further upset when I was at 

a local League match on the 

weekend and a player, who I won’t 

name, came off the field and gave it 

to some opposition supporters as 

he was walking the boundary. 

I’m assuming that something 

was said to him first but let’s 

keep our emotions in check! Our 

great game is the best spectacle in 

sport let’s not ruin it by little 

childish outbursts.

Listening to a number of 

local radio stations over the past 

few weeks I have been angry at the 

same, boring, run-of-the-mill 

responses from our League 

coaches. 

Give us some passion, give us 

some emotion and give us some 

real information! 

Our most colourful League coach 

seems to be indicating that we will 

get none of the colour that we got 

during some of last year’s postmatch 

conversations. The response 

from a number of coaches when 

asked about what is a pass mark 

for their club this season has been 

met with responses like “we want to 

continue to develop our list” or “get

I hope the SANFL aren’t 

seriously thinking about bringing 

in the substitution rule in our 

League. It is one of the stupidest 

rules the AFL has introduced in a 

long time. I hope they keep the 

local footy just the way it is.

think North is going to struggle. A 

number of its recruits don’t seem 

to be adding too much to the 

team, I think it could be a long

confusing. There were eight posts. 

Four goal posts and four net 

posts, the net posts blended in 

with the goal posts. Surely the 

club should paint the net posts

Dear Phantom, 

You mentioned the substitute 

rule introduced by the AFL and 

that the SANFL is considering it. I 

agree with your comments to 

leave our game how it is. It is just 

another tinkering with the rules 

by the AFL that they do in order 

to fix something they tinkered 

with previously. If they want to 

slow the game again or stop 

rotations then limit the 

interchanges to 15 a quarter. I 

also dont think it is any good for 

a footballer to play one quarter of 

football and does nothing for 

their development. 

The AFL originally brought in 

three on the bench and things 

still weren’t fast enough so they 

brought in four on the bench. 

Rotations with four on the bench 

got out of control and speeding 

up the game has not improved it 

from a spectators point of view in 

my opinion, it has actually made it 

worse. Players and clubs just 

need to accept that if you have an 

injury you will be one down on 

your opposition. This will still 

happen if you have four, five or 

six on the bench and there is no 

way to make it even. The coach 

and players just need to dig deep 

and cover the loss. 

If we look back we had two on 

the interchange bench for many 

years and it worked fine 

throughout the country. Ruckmen 

and followers were rested in the 

forward or back pockets and 

didnt have to run up and down 

the ground and worry about 

zones. How many goals did 

resting ruckmen kick and how 

good was it when they were at 

full back spoiling and taking 

marks It is also logical that 

things slow down in the last 

quarter and I cannot understand 

the problem with this. 

Norwood was without Josh 

Donohue for the second half 

against Port and they won and 

the next week Darren Pfeiffer who 

was in Norwood’s best the 

previous week went off with his 

hand injury in the first quarter. 

Norwood had one less on the 

bench for basically the whole 

game yet destroyed Sturt for the 

last three quarters and won by 13 

goals. It shows that you can win if 

you are a player short. 

I really do hope the SANFL 

keeps to three on the bench and 

doesnt worry about introducing 

the substitute rule. Let the clubs 

do what they want with the three 

on the bench and when they get 

injuries they need to just cop 

them on the chin and everyone 

from the coach to the players 

need to work that little bit harder.

Everyone is too scared to say they 

are aiming for the minor premiership 

or anything short of a Finals 

appearance will be considered a fail 

mark. With the way the season has 

started it seems this year, more so 

than ever, the Finals race is open. 

Every club will be aiming to play in 

the major round, as after all that’s 

what footy is about. 

Don’t treat us like fools. We crave 

information and want to know 

exactly the expectation of our clubs. 

So don’t just keep it within internal 

walls, shout it from your soap box 

and challenge your players!

STOKES LOVING HIS SECOND STINT AT UNLEY 

Few people realise that Cameron 

Stokes has been a big Sturt 

admirer since 2007. 

On the surface this would appear a 

tad peculiar for a guy who 

only made his SANFL debut for 

the Double Blues in Round One 

this year. 

Not to mention the fact he’s 

originally from Darwin, where he 

represented the Buffaloes in the 

NTFL, before being drafted by 

Hawthorn and spending the past 

three seasons in the AFL system. 

“Before I moved to Melbourne to 

play with the Hawks, I came over 

here (Adelaide) and played a few 

trial matches (with Sturt) in 2007, 

just after the National Under 18s,” 

said livewire Stokes, a member 

of the ’09 Indigenous All-Stars 

team that defeated Adelaide at 

TIO Stadium. 

“There were a few NT boys here 

who I got on well with and kept in 

contact with - Josh Cubillo, Patty 

Fittock and Charlie Sharples - which 

was one of the main reasons I came 

back.” 

It was another “Top Ender” who 

Stokes would spend time with 

and often be compared to during 

his time with the Hawks, 

who selected him with the 54th pick 

in the 2008 Rookie Draft - the 

mercurial Cyril Rioli. 

Stokes and Rioli had plenty in 

common. 

They played juniors together, their 

births are separated by just 12 days, 

both debuted for Hawthorn in 

Round One, 2008, they spent a lot 

of time together in their early 

days at Glenferrie, and their 

on-field flashiness, evasiveness, 

freakish 3flair and line-breaking 

speed are eerily similar. 

But their careers would veer in 

vastly different directions. 

While Rioli played every match in 

’08, was the youngest member of 

the Hawks’ premiership team and 

has since become a household 

name, Stokes’ progress stalled due

to hamstring problems and 

reconstructions to his shoulder and 

knee, which eventually saw him 

delisted at the end of 2010 after 

20 matches. 

“It was pretty disappointing; I 

tried to get (a career) going,” Stokes 

said. 

“Injuries are part of footy and you 

just have to deal with it. 

“After that (being delisted) I went 

back to Darwin and spent some 

time with my family after being 

away for a few years.” 

A couple of months later, Stokes 

received a call from Sturt operations 

manager Duane Massey to return 

to Unley. 

“Duane wanted me to move down 

and I thought it would be a good 

opportunity, so I stayed with Patty 

Fittock and Josh Cubillo for a week 

and thought I’d see how I go. 

“I enjoyed it and felt it would be a 

good idea to come back.” 

Stokes lives with Sharples and 

close mate, fellow AFL discard and 

off-season recruit Joe Anderson, 

while still spending time socially 

with Cubillo and Fittock. 

“Joe and I have known each other 

since we were young and our 

families are fairly close,” said Stokes, 

whose father’s cousin is Andrew 

McLeod. 

“We share the same management 

group and were looking to go 

somewhere together, so it’s worked 

out well. 

“It’s been great - I haven’t played 

with all those boys since’07, so I’ve 

enjoyed getting around them again.”

WHAT A WAY TO CELEBRATE 

Port’s Brett Ebert celebrated his 

50-game milestone in style with 

a best-on-ground performance as 

Port recorded its first win of 2011. 

Amassing 30 possessions, taking 

seven marks and booting a goal 

Ebert put his hand up for a recall to 

the Power line-up. 

Port came from behind to defeat 

Glenelg at Alberton by just two 

points, Ebert’s efforts earned him 

five votes in the ‘be active’ Star 

Player and R.O. Shearman Medal. 

Judged by members of the SANFL’s 

200 Club on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis for 

every minor round match, the award 

carries with it a $3000 first prize. 

P.S. Three ‘Mystery Rounds’ have

FIXTURE CHANGES 

Footy fans, please note some changes in the League 

match program for Round 7 and 9. Central District’s 

Saturday night matches against Eagles (Round 7) and 

North (Round 9) are now scheduled as Saturday 

afternoon matches at Playford Alive Oval, starting at 

2.10pm. Reserves matches for both matches will start at 

11.25am. 

BLOODS CHARGE INTO FOXTEL CUP 

West Adelaide will be the first SANFL club to compete 

in the Foxtel Cup when it faces Canberra-based club 

Ainslie at AAMI Stadium on Saturday (April 16). 

The match will be played at 4.05pm as a curtainraiser 

to the Balfours Showdown XXX, which kicks off at 

7.10pm. 

West coach Andy Collins said it was a “great honour” to 

take part in the national second-tier competition. 

“Our boys are really confident in their abilities at the 

moment and playing on AAMI Stadium will be a treat in 

itself, as a lot of our players haven’t been involved in 

Finals at AAMI,” he said. 

“We’ve seen vision of Ainslie’s game against GWS and 

we’ve done some preliminary homework on the side, but 

we’ll be approaching it as just another game of footy. 

“We’re hoping to get people in prior to the main event 

and the boys are looking forward to staying afterwards 

to watch the Showdown.” 

CITY AND COUNTRY CLASH IN THE MAC CUP 

The SA Amateur Football League and State Country will 

compete in the annual MAC Cup between City and 

Country next Saturday (April 23) at AAMI Stadium. 

The match, in its fifth year, will be played at 5.30pm 

following the Port v Gold Coast match at 2.40pm. The 

SAAFL (City) team is likely to start favourites after 

winning last year’s clash by 31 points.

Footballer most admired and why: Brett Burton as 

he always kept fit and despite injuries, was one of the 

most entertaining players in the game and lived up to 

his nickname ‘The Birdman’. In Round 22, 2009 he 

took mark of the year on top of at least three other 

players. He was a brilliant role model and showed 

excellent leadership skills. 

Who is going to win the AFL Premiership this year: 

Probably Collingwood Magpies, (but hopefully the 

Crows). 

Who is going to win the SANFL Premiership this 

year: Norwood Redlegs over Central Districts. 

What is your favourite football moment: Personally, 

scoring five goals for the Glen Osmond/Rose Park 

year 2/3 team. And in AFL, witnessing Brett Burton 

take Mark of the Year in 2009. 

Future football aspirations: I would like to continue 

up through the League and play for Norwood. My 

dream is to become number 1 draft pick for the 

Crows and play in an AFL Grand Final.

RISING STARS MAKE THE GRADE 

The SANFL has this week released the Centre of 

Excellence U18 results from two physical testing 

days held in the 2010/2011 off-season. 

All nine clubs took part in the November and 

February sessions, which gauged speed, agility and 

endurance of 450 young players. 

“From my point of view, the test shows their athletic 

prowess and then we marry that up with their ability to 

play the game,” SANFL High Performance Manager 

Brenton Phillips said. 

“If you can get someone with good football nous and 

with good athletic prowess, you start talking high-end 

footballers.”

With the Magpies 

down by four goals at half-time, Wilson exploded 

in the second half to turn the tide with some 

memorable ground level play in the forward half. His 

clean hands, pace and ability led to a match total of 

30 possessions, including 

19 kicks, 11 handballs, 

three marks and five goals. 

Originally from Port District, the 17 year old was a 

member of the 2009 SANFL U16s State Team. 

The Macca’s Cup Most Valuable Player will be 

awarded at the end of the season to the U18s player 

judged the fairest and most brilliant in 2011. 

Club development officers will nominate players of 

the round to a judging panel headed by Talent 

Manager Brenton Phillips. 

The 2011 Macca’s Cup Most Valuable Player will 

receive a $1000 cash prize and a medal courtesy of 

McDonald’s.
