V. THE DENAR ® MARK II
FACEBOW/EARBOW (Model D31AB)
The Denar ® Mark II Facebow/Earbow is
used to register the correct position for
the patient’s maxillary cast to be mounted
in the articulator. In other words, the
facebow/earbow records the relation of
the patient’s maxillary dental structures
to the horizontal reference plane and
transfers this relationship to the articulator.
The use of the Denar ® Facebow/ Earbow
involves three overall procedures:
A. Locating three reference points
on the patient’s face
B. Assembling the facebow/earbow
on the patient
C. Transferring the facebow/earbow
to the articulator
The detailed steps of each of these
three procedures is as follows.
LOCATING THREE REFERENCE
POINTS ON THE PATIENT’S FACE
The components of the facebow kit
needed are: the reference plane locator
and reference plane marker. These
two items are used to locate three anatomical
reference points on the patient’s
face. Of these three points, two are posterior
and one is anterior.
There are two means of locating the
posterior points. The first is by precise
location of the terminal hinge axis
with a hinge axis locator.1 The second
means is by locating the points by average
anatomical measurement, which is
simpler and faster, and is the procedure
described in this section of this manual.
1. Other reference material must be consulted for detailed instructions on how to precisely
locate the terminal hinge axis position (i.e., the “Denar ® Procedures Manual – Procedures for
Occlusal Treatment” or the “Denar ® Office Tutor” ).
