PARISH BUSINESS
The Year of Faith
Pope Benedict XVI has declared that beginning October 11, 2012, and concluding on the
feast of Christ the King, November 24, 2013, the Church celebrates “The Year of Faith.” Two
important events mark the beginning of this yearlong celebration. First is the 50 th anniversary
of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and the second is the 20 th anniversary of the
publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Both of these events helped the Church
to renew her commitment and to deepen her understanding of the faith. In this special year,
we too are called to strengthen our faith and to renew our commitment to God. Through
prayer and reflection, reading and studying, and sharing our faith with others we can best
enter into this great celebration. Throughout this year, our Parish Pastoral Council will be
assisting me with events and programs to mark this yearlong celebration, and to help our
Parish mark The Year of Faith.
Fr. Huggins
Why is the First Sunday in October
Designated as Respect Life Sunday
This Sunday we focus on the Christian mission to Respect
Life. The phrase captures the core of Jesus’ teaching expressed
in Matthew 25: “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers
and sisters, you do to me.”
Jesus clearly states that our relationship to God is determined
by our relationships with one another. This demands
that Christians be attuned to anything that would diminish life
at all its stages. From the womb to tomb, from birth to death,
and at every stage between, we are called to treat all of life
with dignity, respect, honor and reverence.
Catholics are often seen as people who do respect life. Our
efforts to end abortion or prevent embryonic stem cell research
are well–known. Less publicized are the efforts made to assist
those in prison, those dying of starvation or unsanitary living
conditions, those dying because of systemic violence or abuse,
or the thousands who die from the violence of war.
The late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin clearly stated that all
Christians are called to approach human life with a consistent
ethic which he called “the seamless garment.” We are to spend as
much effort to fight war, poverty, hunger, death penalty and other
life issues as we do on abortion and embryonic stem cell research.
How seamless is your “respect life” garment How can you
make sure that a consistent ethic of life is part of your Christian
journey ©2007 Liturgical Publications Inc, New Berlin, WI 53151.
Respect Life Crosses
Over the past several years it has been the tradition at Visitation
Parish to display white memorial crosses on the front lawn of the
church during the month of October, which is observed as Respect
Life Month. These 4,000 crosses represent the number of children
who are killed by abortions each day in our country. Some are
upset that we have this display. Seeing these crosses should be
unsettling for us, as we are reminded of the millions of our brothers
and sisters lost in this holocaust of the unborn since the legalization
of abortion in the United States in 1973.
As you pass these crosses during the next couple of weeks, be
sure to offer prayer for these “holy innocents,” for their mothers
and all those touched by the tragedy of abortion, and for our
country, that we may turn away from the culture of death and
embrace the Gospel of Life. Let us work for the day when all
human life is protected under law and this display in no longer
necessary. Thank you to our parishioners whose dedication to
the cause of life makes this memorial display possible each year.
On the back of the funeral prayer card for former Rep. Henry
Hyde (a great pro–life advocate in Congress), was a quote from
one of the Congressman’s speeches:
When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome
moment, the final judgment, I’ve often thought, as Fulton
Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no
advocates, you are there alone standing before God—and a terror
will rip through your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really
think that those in the pro–life movement will not be alone. I
think there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in
this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world
and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement.
They will say to God, ‘Spare him because he loved us,’ and God
will look at you and say not, ‘Did you succeed’but ‘Did you try’
SCHOOL
MANNA—R.E. & Visitation School Tuition Assistance Program
This past week 41 Visitation Grade School and other organization families purchased $15,371 in gift certificates through our
MANNA program. The earned tuition credit for the past week was $883. It would be a tremendous help to have more Visitation families
participate to a greater degree in our program. We all buy groceries, dine out and shop at department stores. When you purchase
$100 in gift certificates through our program, you are getting exactly $100 in certificate value. The certificate discount is returned to
participating families in the form of a tuition credit. There is absolutely NO cost to you for using this program. Visitation school families
who participate receive the discount in a tuition credit. When non–school families participate, the school benefits. The larger the
volume of certificates we can purchase, the greater the discount.
Our program has exceeded annual sales of nearly $100,000 in Scholar Dollars. This is more than any other school in Elmhurst.
Just think about this. Approximately $9,000 in tuition credit has been earned by our school families from the sales of this one certificate.
The scholar dollars may be used at any of over 80 City Centre participating stores and restaurants at a huge 9% discount. For
every $100 in Scholar Dollars purchased through our program, $9 is earned in credit toward your family tuition. For your convenience,
the participating stores and restaurants are printed on the reverse side of the certificate. We are extremely grateful to the City
of Elmhurst for inviting Visitation School into this program. Please help to return the favor by doing most of your shopping in your
local community and by thanking the stores for giving up a part of their profit by participating in the Scholar Dollar Program.
Now you can visit the school website (www.visitationelmhurst.org) to view or print our most recent updated MANNA Order Form. For
additional information or to place a large order, please call David James at 630-834-0967 before 6:00 P.M. Sunday evening.
Public Square Rosary Crusade
America is at a historic crossroads. Secularists are trying to
push God from the public square. They reject His beneficial
action upon society. But without God, where will our leaders
get the wisdom to solve the great problems we face
We must stop the secularist advance and pray to God for
help. He will hear us, if we pray through the intercession of
His Blessed Mother. That’s why we’re launching the 2012
Public Square Rosary Crusade.
In The Secret Of The Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort
said “Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer
to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and
the Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has
always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy
and suffering.”
Crusaders Adore Our Lord
At The Perpetual Adoration Chapel
Late one Friday evening, I was praying in the Adoration
Chapel. There were only about four adorers. As I was reading a
book about Eucharistic Adoration, I heard the door to Adoration
Chapel open, and I saw at least fifteen young people ranging from
twelve years of age to college age walk into the Chapel, get down
on both knees and reverently bow down before the Blessed
Sacrament. As they knelt down in the pews and gazed upon Jesus
in the Eucharist, one could tell that they all were in deep prayer.
It was quite obvious that they were all praying for some thing
very important and special to them. The power, energy, and sincerity
of their prayer could be felt throughout the whole Chapel.
Whenever I see our youth in the Chapel, it always makes me
feel good and more positive about the world in which we live. It
tells me that these young people are properly setting their priorities.
This group of young people could have easily been spending
a Friday night at a football game, at a movie, or just “hanging out”
with friends. Instead they chose to spend their evening with Jesus.
When I exited the Adoration Chapel, I saw a couple of the
youth who just finished praying in the Chapel. I started up a conversation
with them, and they told me that they are a part of a
group called “The Crusaders for Life,” a Pro–life youth group
from St. John Cantius Parish in Chicago. They were from
Chicago and the surrounding suburbs and they frequently come
to visit Visitation’s Adoration Chapel and other Adoration
Chapels in the area to pray for the unborn and for an end to abortion.
One of the young men told me that he was excited about
and looking forward to being a part of the March for Life in
Washington, D.C. this January. Throughout the year, this youth
group also prays for the unborn at abortion clinics.
During October—Respect Life Month—follow the good
example of The Crusaders for Life and spend some time in front
of the Blessed Sacrament to pray for the sanctity of life. And also
pray for our youth. These young people are good role models for
us all and they are the Catholic Church’s present and future. We
all should be proud of not only their love for the Lord, but also
their love and respect for life!
Jesus is waiting for your visit to the Perpetual Adoration
Chapel. You can visit with Him 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
Rosebud Program Intentions
In our calling to respect the dignity and worth of all life, the Elizabeth Ministry requests that you please remember
in your prayers the following intentions placed at the statue of the Visitation this past week:
2 intentions for those who are pregnant and their unborn babies.
2 intentions for those families celebrating births and/or adoptions.
1 intention for those grieving a miscarriage, still birth, abortion or infant or child death.
2 intentions remembering those wanting to conceive or adopt.
Dear Visitation Council of Catholic Women,
It is a pleasure to send my greetings and congratulations
as you celebrate your 60 th Anniversary. The CCW has
always been one of the most vibrant organizations at
Visitation Parish. As Pastor, I always knew I could count on
your assistance. Through your many and varied programs
and activities, you have strived to provide spiritual, service
and social opportunities for the women of Visitation, as well
as helping to support the work of the parish and its ministries.
Working together, you have accomplished wonderful
things for the Church and we are reminded of what can
be done when we allow the Holy Spirit to unite us in faith,
hope and love in the service of God’s people.
This time of remembrance is also a time to prayerfully
give thanks for those women who have preceded you for the
past 60 years. This is a wonderful way of recognizing that
you build on the legacy of those who have gone before you.
May the Lord bless you, your families and your efforts in
the coming years.
