Howard W. Koch, president of (he
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences, has been presented with a life
membership in the academy by the board of
governors, recognizing the special contribu
tions he has made during his two terms as
president Koch will leave his position as
governor this month, having served the
10-year maximum set forth in the academy bylaws.
Samuel Z. Arkoff has been named chair
man and Michael Samuelson deputy chairman
of (he Heart Awards Committee of Variety
Clubs International. Both are vice presidents
of VCI.
"Willie and Phil," 20th Century-Fox com
ed> . has returned to Hollywood for four weeks
of shooting after completing two months work
in New York City. After the Hollywood work,
the company will leave for India to complete
the production.
Director Hal Needham was honored by
NATO of Ohio July 24 with an appreciation
award for his contributions to the film in
dustry.
Howard W. Koch has been named chair
man for the third consecutive year of the 1 980
fund raising campaign of the Permanent
Charities Committee of the Entertainment Industry,
with a goal of S2.000.000. Led by
Koch the committee this year raised
SI. 828.735. and the year before that,

The Screen Actors Guild's nominating com
mittee for board members from the general
membership has named a slate of 1 4 nominees
for three year terms and one nominee for a
one year term. Nominees for three year terms
were: George American Norse. Kay Peters,
Joseph Ruskin. Renee Wedel. Paul Napier.
Ron Soble. Peter Haskel. Barbara Barron.

Producer Jennings Lang has completed
principal photography on "The Return of
Maxwell Smart" at Universal Studios.
Producer-director Sydney Pollack has join
ed international financier producer Arnon
Milchan in a new company. Panscal Productions,
to develop and finance film projects.
The company will have headquarters at the
Burbank Studios.
"Brubaker," 20th Century Fox feature
starring Robert Redford, has completed principal
photography under Stuart Rosenbergs
direction of the Ted Mann Ron Silverman
production.
The motion picture sound track album of
Paramount s "Star Trek—The Motion Picture"
will be released on (he Columbia label
under a deal that also involves recording and
distributing "Star Trek" related product, in
eluding 45 rpm singles and LP albums made
b> Columbia recording artists.
Andrew .1. Fenady will novelize his
screenplay "Sieber's Scouts" lor Avon Papa
back, for publication next January. The storv
deals with the experiences of Al Sieber. chief
of scouts for Col. George Cook in the Arizona

William Demarest will have a motion picture
star dedicated in his honor in
Hollywood's Walk of Fame Aug 8. marking
his career of 82 years in the entertainment
business. His star will be placed in front of the
Musso and Frank Grill. Hollywood landmark
restaurant, the meeting place of actors and
celebrities since the days when the movie industry
started in the city.
SEATTLE
The Seattle Center (where the World's Fair
was held in 1962) will have UFO Day for Walt
Disney Productions' "Unidentified Flying Oddball."

"The Amityville Horror" as well as
a number of other Al executives. Julian Myers

Universal sneak previewed "More
American Graffiti" at both the Coliseum in
downtown Seattle and the Crest 70 on July
27. The film opened in the area Aug. 3.
Bob Goodwin of Jack Wodell and
Associates brought Charlie Martin Smith into
town for interviews with the media on behalf
of the same film
DENVER
Funeral Services were held at dinger
Chapel for Bates Farley, owner and operator
of Mountain States Film Distributors. He died
at age 52.
Farley originally started in the distribution
end of the business as a booker with MGM in
Oklahoma City. He was transferred by MGM
to Denver where he was an office manager,
then a salesman and finally a branch manager,
a post he held until the phase out of various
MGM branch offices. He established his independent
film exchange business at that time.
Bates is survived by his wife. Linda, a son.
Mann Theatres has announced thai it will
be opening a new six unit theatre in the Union
Square Shopping Center at Sixth and Simnis
streets in West Denver. Plans call fur the new
facility to have approximately 350 seats in
each auditorium. Construction will start this
fall and completion is scheduled for June
1980. The architect is Mel Glatz. longtime
Denver theatre designer.

The "Grand Old Lady" of movie theatres
in Hawaii, the Waikiki iNow. Waikiki 3) on
Kalakaus Avenue may soon be scrapped to
make way for a multi-level theatre and shopp
ing complex. The city okayed a permit which
will allow Consolidated Amusement Com
pany to go ahead with their plans. The
Waikiki first opened its doors in 1936.

Savings
and Loan Association and 20th Century-
Fox have joined forces for an extensive promotional
tie-in for the film company's new picture,
"Breaking Away."
The youth-oriented film, highlighting the
world of championship bicycle racing, will be
cross-plugged by San Diego Federal in each of
the association's 1 00 branches with give-away
drawings of lO-speed bicycles. 2,000 onesheets
and Warner paperback books. The campaign,
which will run through Sept. 4. will also
feature special promotional screenings of the
film.
