VISITATION, ELMHURST, IL FEBRUARY 24, 2008
Dear Friends in Christ,
In the story of the Last Judgment, Jesus reminds us to
care for those in need. If we ignore those who are hungry,
thirsty, ill, without clothes, in prison, or strangers we turn
away from him. When we act with compassion, generosity,
and commitment to justice for the “least among us,” we act
as his true disciples.
The Catholic Relief Services Collection is an important
opportunity to express Christian compassion and generosity.
The Collection is scheduled for March 1–2, 2008 in
our diocese. The Collection theme, Jesus in disguise,
reminds us of the presence of Christ in every one of our
brothers and sisters in need. The Collection helps build the
Church’s international social ministry by funding the work
of six agencies:
Catholic Relief Services, the official international relief and
development agency of the Catholic community in the United
States, assists people in 98 countries on the basis of need.
Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., provides a
full range of legal and support services to Catholic programs
directly representing poor immigrants.
Migration and Refugee Services, of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops, annually resettles one
quarter of the refugees admitted to the United States.
Justice, Peace, and Human Development, of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops, advocates for poor
and vulnerable people and for international peace and justice.
The Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church, of
the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has as
part of its mission the evangelization and pastoral care of
immigrants, migrants, refugees, and people on the move.
The Holy Father’s Relief Fund assists victims of natural
disasters and other emergencies around the world.
By giving to The Catholic Relief Services Collection,
you are responding to Jesus in disguise. Thank you for your
generosity! Please visit www.usccb.org/crscollection for
more information.
Sincerely in Christ,
Special Collection for Snow Removal Costs
March 2, 2008
For the first time in at least eleven years, we are going to
take up a second collection for the benefit of our own church.
This winter has been one of the worst since 1979 and our snow
removal bills can prove that. To date we have spent over
$72,000 and this is well over our usual budget of $30–35,000.
Some might say that this cost is outrageous and we understand
this thought, however we must all remember that we have
almost twelve acres of property to maintain. This entails not
only plowing the parking lots, but shoveling all the walkways
and salting them as well. A big snowfall can mean that our
snow removal company will have to come and clear our lots
and sidewalks two or three times. They have a schedule of all
our Masses and our school schedule, so they are very aware of
making sure we are trying to keep you all safe in your walk to
church or school. Since your safety is our first concern, your
generosity will be greatly appreciated.
Envelopes will be provided in the pews should you wish to
use them, or feel free to put your donation in a regular envelope
so we can give you credit for your taxes. Questions
February 15, 2008
Dear Visitation Parishioners,
Below is our parish financial statement for the fiscal year 2006–07. It has been prepared by Debbie Johnson,
our Business Manager, in collaboration with our Finance Council.
I am grateful to all those parishioners who have been faithful in their financial stewardship to Visitation. It is
your generous commitment to our parish that makes possible all the ministries and programs we offer. Along with
funding our normal services, we have also been able to complete some important projects. The entrances to the
church were remodeled to make them handicapped accessible This work included a new drop-off driveway and
automatic door. Also, new lighting was added around the church to improve visibility at evening Masses and
other activities in the church. Funds for these projects were paid out of our Building Repair Fund, which is on
deposit at the diocese. Monies are deposited in this account from overages on budgets from past fiscal years and
are used for repairs and capital improvement projects.
However, as you will note in the report, for the first time in more than ten years, we closed out the fiscal year
with a deficit. This was due in part to unexpected increases in the costs of natural gas and electricity as well as
emergency repairs of the gas lines and roof in the school building. The spike in gasoline prices also drove up the
costs of many of our disposable items such as paper goods and computer and school supplies. Based on a $3.71
million total parish budget, the deficit amounted to only a .003 % overage.
While not a large percentage, this deficit does point to the need for us to renew our commitment to stewardship.
While expenses have continued to increase each year (and most items in the budget are fixed, such as utilities
and salaries), our offertory has not increased proportionally. I realize that everyone is facing the challenges
of uncertain economic times and you have also been very generous in responding to our capital campaign. I
would simply ask that those who have the means to consider increasing their sacrificial offertory donation, even
if only by $5–$10 a week to help us meet our higher expenses. To those on a fixed income or facing financial difficulty
and are already giving all they can, I ask nothing more. For all parishioners, I invite you to learn about our
E-Giving program that makes it easier to be consistent in your financial stewardship.
For any parish to flourish, it is vital that all its members practice faithful stewardship, and Visitation is no
exception. Stewardship is part of our baptismal call to live as God’s sons and daughters, returning a portion of
our blessings back to God to further the work of His Church. Stewardship is a way of life, an “attitude of gratitude”
for God’s gracious gifts so abundantly bestowed on us. Sacrificial giving is also a reminder of our dependence
on God and that He is never outdone in His generosity.
With the continuing progress of our Building for Our Family of Faith Capital Campaign, we look forward to
a new chapter in the life of our parish family. Yet as we invest in the future growth and development of our parish
programs and facilities, we also need to work together to provide for current needs. Your faithful stewardship in
the offertory collection makes this possible and I am so grateful for your generosity. Be assured of my prayers
for you when I celebrate Mass each day. May God bless you.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Joseph M. Siegel
Pastor
Tuition Assistance Program
This past week 45 Visitation Grade School families and 4
Religious Education families purchased $18,400 and $1,935 in
gift certificates. There have been several disappointments in the
past few weeks as our customers expect to visit our Walk–in
Service and purchase large quantities of certificates. It is important
to call ahead to reserve a large order for any one store or
restaurant by Sunday night if this item is needed the following
week. The orders from our participants are at times huge and a
short call will solve this situation without pain.
It is very important to our program that a dedicated volunteer
step forward to assist in the overall coordination of this
growing program. The work effort has increased to the point
where the smooth operation is being challenged. It would be
ideal if a retired individual, who enjoys working with detail
and has lots of free time to offer our program for several years
in the future, could volunteer. Please let us hear from you.
Hang On
Three weeks before the death of Fr. Joseph Kentenich,
founder of the Schoenstatt Movement, after the completion of
Holy Mass, someone held out a Crucifix before him so that he
could bless it. Father turned it around, pointed to the empty surface
on the reverse side and smiled at the person before him. His
gesture was understood and all present got the message without
a word having been spoken.
Father Kentenich had often said: “Two should hang on the
same cross. That is why there is still room on the other side. We
bear our Saviour’s cross and He bears ours all for the intention
and the redemption of the world;” to draw mankind home to the
Father. (from The Three Pillars).
During this week of Lent, come to the Adoration Chapel, sit
it the presence of our risen Lord while you meditate on the crucified
Lord on the Cross above the Monstrance. The reverse side
is waiting for you. HANG ON!
The Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7days a week. Due to the
Five First Saturday Devotion Reminder
The next first Saturday of the month is March 1, 2008. Please
come and accept the graces which Our Lady wishes to give to
those who complete the Five First Saturdays devotion. Our Lady
revealed to Sister Lucia (one of the seers of Fatima) the promise
of the Five First Saturdays: I promise, at the hour of death, to help
with the graces needed for salvation, whoever on the First
Saturday of five consecutive months shall: Confess and receive
Holy Communion; Recite five decades of the Rosary; and keep me
company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries
of the Rosary with the intention of making reparation to me.
We will honor Our Lady of Fatima’s wishes as we celebrate
the first Saturday devotion on March 1. The devotion begins
with the 8:15 A.M. Mass. We then move to a fifteen minute guided
meditation on the Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary and the
recitation of the Rosary. At the conclusion, we recite the Litany
of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sacramental confessions are heard
on Saturday afternoons from 4:00–5:00 P.M. in the Church.
Confessions may be made one week before or after the First
Saturday of the month.
Registration/Welcome Coffee
Visitation parish hosts a monthly Welcoming Coffee for
new parishioners after the 10:00 A.M. Mass on the last
Sunday of every month. At this gathering, newcomers will
be able to register in the parish, learn about the various ministries
and programs offered by Visitation, and meet the
priests and some of our parish family. We hope that this program
will enable us to reach out to new members and help
them feel more comfortable in our community.
If you are new to the area and wish to register at
Visitation, please join us this SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24,
in PODESTA HALL after the 10:00 A.M. Mass.
As Catholics we are not single issue voters. A candidate’s
position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee a
voter’s support. Yet a candidate’s position on a single issue
that involves an intrinsic evil, such as support for legal abortion
or the promotion of racism, may legitimately lead a voter
to disqualify a candidate from receiving support.
Attention
Our February meeting will be held in Madonna Hall on
Thursday, February 28, at 1:00 P.M. We will have a White
and decide what the value could be. We will probably have
BINGO for part of the afternoon if there is time, so bring a little
bag of “gold.”
We will have desserts so you may want to give up lunch for
Lent. Of course, many of us are over the age of fasting but not
“abstaining.”
For more information, please call Lori at 630-832-8276 or
Jane at 630-617-4904. Bring a friend if you would like.
Restorative Justice and
Pastoral Care Workshop
Catholic parishes are extremely concerned about ministering
to their parishioners. Often, however, we do not realize
some of our people, including children, suffer because
one of their family members is incarcerated or a victim of
crime or violence. The diocese Peace and Social Justice
Ministry will offer an event entitled: “Human Contact
Deprivation: Experienced by Persons Incarcerated & Their
Family Members, Victims of Crime & Their Family
Members.” Please seriously consider attending this day
meant to heighten awareness of this issue and opportunities
to assist and advocate for parishioners and others experiencing
this trauma.
The program will take place from 11:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.
at Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 337 S. Ottawa St., Joliet, IL
60436 on Saturday, March 1, 2008. Registration begins at
Bulletin Stuffers
The timely communication of important events
concerning parish life is very important to our
parish community. For this reason, parish organizations
or groups, on occasion, request permission
to stuff the bulletin with additional information.
Father Siegel and Father Hessling welcome any
help that parishioners can give us in communicating
important events to the people of the parish.
However, additional information and/or advertisements
to be stuffed in the bulletin must be approved
prior to insertion. Approval for bulletin inserts is
given on a case by case basis. Please note that we
may not always be able to give approval due to the
nature of the material, the liturgical season,
Church guidelines, etc. To ensure that the Sunday
Bulletins are not lost or damaged, they cannot be
taken from the parish property for any reason. They
can be stuffed in the usher’s room located off the
vestibule of the Church. We thank you for your help,
support and understanding concerning this policy.
Announcements
The communication of announcements concerning parish life is
very important to the entire parish community. Father Siegel and
Father Hessling welcome any help that parishioners can give in communicating
important events to the people of the parish. Because we
do not want to inundate you with a long string of announcements at the
end of Mass, the Sunday Bulletin is the ordinary way in which events
concerning parish life are communicated. Some information, however,
does necessitate an announcement at the end of Mass. For example,
you’ll notice that we highlight certain aspects of our parish’s liturgical,
educational or social life at the end of Mass. Any parish organization,
or parishioner, wishing to submit information to be considered
for the Sunday announcements should have the information (in
writing) to the Rectory BEFORE the close of business on MONDAY
so it can be considered for the weekend announcements. Also, there
is a deadline for articles to be published in the Sunday Bulletin
because we need ample time to write, proof and send the bulletin copy
to the printer. The deadline for submission of articles to be placed in
the bulletin is Friday 4:30 P.M. (nine days before publication) to the
Rectory business office. We thank you for your help, support and
understanding concerning this policy
