Anzac Day
ceremony By
Christopher Testa
Football on Anzac Day is one of
the great traditions of Australian
sport.
It’s a day we honour those who
served and died for their country.
For Bombardier David Sturtevant,
who is the flag orderly at this year’s
Anzac Day clash between Norwood
and West Adelaide, the event
brings together his love of footy
and his duty of serving his country.
As a current member of the
Defence Force, he is also a proud
supporter of the Norwood Football
Club.
Bdr Sturtevant enlisted in 1995
and remained full time until 2007,
having deployed twice to East
Timor as well as during the initial
liberation of Iraq.
He believes footy on Anzac Day
helps share arguably the country’s
most important tradition with future
generations.
“It’s a good way to get, not just
kids, but also people from different
countries and backgrounds to
understand Anzac Day.
“Remembering the past Diggers
and representing people who may
have passed away – honouring
their service and sacrifice,” he said.
The link between football and the
Anzac tradition is also strongly felt
by Rodney Pope, who has been
selected to toss the coin on Anzac
Day.
Mr Pope is a Vietnam veteran and
is also a former football star. He
played 95 games for Norwood, 209
games for West Adelaide as well as
ten State Games.
His shared links to both clubs in
this year’s Anzac clash will make
the day all the more meaningful.
Despite admitting that he gets to
more Westies games than Norwood
“I think it’s good because you
get all the old diggers and the old
military cars out and people can
stop and think about it for a few
minutes; it’s not forgotten.”
being a western suburbs local, he
still has a soft spot for the Redlegs.
“I spent six good years with
Norwood and they were a great
club; they looked after me well and
I’ve got a lot of time for them.”
Mr Pope was conscripted in 1965
and embarked on a tour of duty in
Vietnam the following year.
While Mr Pope’s time in the army
was short, he is a firm believer in
the Anzac tradition and has
participated in the Anzac Day footy
match for around the past ten
years.
Playing the Last Post at the 2010 Anzac Day game.
“I mainly do it for the World War II
blokes and the tradition; to keep
the tradition alive.
“I think it’s good because you get
all the old diggers and the old
military cars out and people can
stop and think about it for a few
minutes; it’s not forgotten,” he said.
While a game of football is not a
matter of life and death, Mr Pope
said there are shared values
between those serving their
country and those representing
their football clubs.
“You’ve got that comradeship, the

5
bond, when you’re a footy side.
You’re together playing as a group
and it all comes back to teamwork
and everybody pulling together to
strive for the ultimate.
“In the army, you’re all pulling
together to make sure every person
survives; people have got to be
disciplined and work together,” he
said.
Dr Robert Black AM RFD will
recite the ode on Anzac Day and
his time with the Defence Force
took him to far flung places,
including Timor, Bougainville,
Rwanda and Malaya.
Dr Black began his compulsory
national service joining the
university squadron in 1957 and
later graduated as a pilot officer
and became a reserve medical
officer.
He worked in various parts of
the world as a general surgeon,
with hospital and university
appointments, before returning to
regular service in 1980 as a
specialist reserve medical officer.
Dr Black reached the rank of
Group Captain and is a member of
the Order of Australia.
He continues to work with the
defence forces as a member of
Legacy, which cares for the families
and widows of veterans, and he is
also on the Veterans Review Board.
Speaking of the links between
sport and the Anzac tradition, Dr
Black notes football was always
important to many of those who
served and provided an
opportunity for bonding between
mates.
“There were many Australian
soldiers who played football in
recreation time overseas and it
was a big part of the culture of the
Diggers in World War I and World
War II.”
Dr Black also spoke of Philip de
Quetteville Robin, a former
Norwood footballer and winner of
the club’s Best–and-Fairest in 1911,
whose achievements on the
football field were remarkably
surpassed by his courage and
Anzac Day Parade 2012.
bravery while he served for his
country.
Private Robin reached the third
ridge at Gallipoli, the furthest any
Australian would get during the
campaign.
A member of the 10 th battalion,
Private Robin was the first South
Australian footballer to die at
Gallipoli.
These are just some of the men
we will keep in mind come Anzac
Day and remember all those who
made the ultimate sacrifice to
serve and defend our country.
Special day has
long traditions
by Robert laidlaw
8
Eagles players stand to show their respect at the 2012 Anzac Day game.
Anzac Day is one of the most important days on the
calendar for many Australians. There are various
traditions associated with the occasions, including the
annual SANFL Anzac Day match between the previous
season’s Grand Finalists.
On April 25, 1915, Australian and New Zealand
soldiers landed in Gallipoli as part of a defensive
action in World War I. It lasted eight months and saw
over 8000 Australian soldiers killed in action.
Soon after the war finished, football matches were
organised at Adelaide Oval on Anzac Day, with service
teams competing a week before the SANFL season
commenced in early May.
From The Advertiser on April 27, 1920, the first
Anzac matches between teams from the Returned
Sailors and the Soldiers Imperial League were played
on Adelaide Oval, where a crowd of ‘many thousands’
witnessed two well-contested games.
In the first clash, a Light Horse team triumphed over
the 50th Battalion by 23 points, while the second game
saw the 27th Battalion manage a close 11-point victory
over the 10th Battalion.
Through the 1920s these games became regular
features leading into the League football season, with
service teams filled with players from the various
sides in the State League. They played for the Heylen
Challenge Shield.
The first hint of considering League football on Anzac
Day came in 1931, when the finance committee of the
SANFL was instructed at the annual meeting of
delegates to confer with the RSL on the possibility.
Due to the depression through the 1930s, service
games on Anzac Day became less regular, although
country football games were played on the occasion,
with renewed interest after World War II.
On Anzac Day in 1947, the national game was revived
with a combined Navy/Air Force team playing on
Adelaide Oval against an Army team, led by former
West Adelaide captain-coach G.M. Scott.
A year later a League match was held for the first
time on Anzac Day, between the previous season’s
Grand Finalists, West Adelaide and Norwood.
West had come from the First Semi-Final to win the
1947 premiership, but in the first official SANFL game
associated with Anzac Day, it was the Redlegs who
were successful, winning 18-16 to 11-20.
It wasn’t until 1954 that the tradition of the
previous season’s Grand Finalists started on a more
regular basis, with West Torrens and Port Adelaide
meeting.
20 years later SANFL headquarters shifted to Football
Park (now AAMI Stadium), and the following season
the annual Anzac Day clash changed venue from
Adelaide Oval to West Lakes.
From 1986 to 2000 only four Anzac Day games
occurred between Grand Finalists, but it has been a
regular feature on the SANFL fixtures since 2001.
In 2002 the Bob Quinn Medal was introduced and is
awarded to the best player on Anzac Day.
“As a player, being involved in the Anzac Day match
is something special and something to look forward
to,” Central District captain Paul Thomas said.

9
“It’s the closest you can get to a finals atmosphere,
and it’s a chance to test yourself in a big game.
“With football, it’s not life and death like all the
service people had to face, who have and still defend
the country through the wars and currently in
Afghanistan. But it is a privilege to play with the
realisation they fought for our freedom and rights.”
Thomas always rises to the occasion on Anzac Day,
winning the Bob Quinn Medal in 2003, 2004, 2008 and
2011. He missed the 2005 game while with Essendon,
but has played in every other clash since 2002.
“As soon as we hit the turf, you are up for it,” the
Bulldogs skipper said. “The parade, the Last Post and
the National Anthem all make your hair stand up on
the back of your neck.
“The day is synonymous with mate-ship, dedication
and spirit. It is a real battle on the field, but afterwards
the teams shake hands and there is an unspoken
respect between both sides in honouring the day.
“I’ll miss not playing, but Norwood and West Adelaide
have earned the right to be involved this year.”
Of the 46 Anzac Day matches between the previous
year’s Grand Finalists, 25 times the premier has won,
with one match drawn and 20 times the loser has
extracted a measure of revenge.
The AFL has its Anzac tradition of Collingwood v
Essendon games, but the SANFL has a more rewarding
system making teams earn the right to play on one of
Australia’s most important days of the year.
Thewlis fit for
new role By Netta Antonino
South Adelaide’s Josh Thewlis
may have suffered a few injuries
in the past but the veteran believes
he is the fittest he has ever been.
It couldn’t come at a better time
for the 28-year-old, who was
named captain this year after 107
games for the club.
Thewlis, who is a carpenter by
trade, saw his season cut short last
year after a work injury left him
with severed tendons in his hand
and then later breaking his foot.
In the past five years he has also
endured two shoulder
reconstructions and two horror
work injuries, with a stray nail
going in the back of his knee and
another in the back of his heel
when using a nail gun.
But this year, the veteran believes
he is in the best shape of his
career, and said a full pre-season is
the reason his fitness has
improved.
“In the past where I’ve struggled
through seasons, it’s been the years
that I haven’t been able to do much
pre-season,” Thewlis said.
“We changed up our training
program this year, we focused a lot
more on explosive power and that
side of it and that seemed to have
suited me.
“I’m five kilograms heavier than
I’ve ever been but I’m running as
good as I’ve ever ran so I think
that’s sort of helped.”
Thewlis was chosen by the
leadership group to captain the
side after they voted on who
embodied the club’s core values
and behaviours.
He said it was nice to be chosen
by his peers and know he had their
full support.
“You obviously don’t play footy to
be captain and stuff like that but if
you are chosen it feels pretty good,”
he said.
Thewlis came to South Australia
Josh Thewlis in the Round 1 South v Glenelg match.
in 2006 after stints in the AFL with
Sydney Swans, where he was
drafted in 2002, and on North
Melbourne’s rookie list.
Hailing from Donald in Victoria, he
played with Bendigo Pioneers in
the TAC cup before being drafted.
Thewlis, who is the Panthers’
oldest player, said he had enjoyed
working with the younger members
of the side.
“We’re still a fairly young group
but I think everyone’s maturing at
the same pace,” he said.
Despite the injury setbacks over
the years, he said he had found
spending time in the coaches’ box
beneficial while on the sidelines.
“You see a lot of things from up
there that you don’t necessarily see
when you’re playing or even just
sitting on the sidelines,” he said.
“I actually get a few of the boys
when they’re injured to sit up there
during a game… it makes you
really notice how much things
stand out on the field.”
The Panthers enjoyed a taste of
success in 2011 to reach the finals
for the first time in five years, before
slipping to finish eighth in 2012.
However, Thewlis believes the side
is determined to improve on last
season’s result.
He said it had been bolstered by
the additions of players which
include former Norwood player
Roland Ah Chee, John McDonald
from Sturt and Shannon Snook from
Glenelg.
Other additions include Brede
Seccull (Collingwood VFL), Brett
Eddy (Collingwood VFL) and Jordan
Taylor (Murray Bushrangers).
“We’ve recruited some different
players into the club that will benefit
us a lot,” Thewlis said.
“We won’t accept finishing where
we finished last year again this year
and I think that’s the difference.
“We’re constantly thinking about it
(finals). We’ll be keeping check on
where we’re positioned and what
games we need to win.”
– ROUND 4
South Adelaide’s Caleb Daniel was the
most influential player in the clash
against Sturt last weekend. Daniel’s ability
to work in and around stoppages was first
class, and he showed a lot of composure
and poise with the ball. He continually
brought others into the game by creating advantages in
space while under pressure. Daniel collected 22 kicks,
18 handballs, 9 marks, 14 clearances and 6 inside 50s.
