PARISH BUSINESS
Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
On Monday, May 7, the Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe comes to visit Visitation
Parish in the Adoration Chapel from 7:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. She will then be present in the
Church at 7:00 P.M. during the Prayer Hour for Priests. The image is an exact 4 x 6 foot digital replica
of the original Miraculous Image. The Missionary Image is blessed by Msgr. Diego Monroy,
Rector of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It has journeyed throughout America. Msgr.
Monroy blessed the Image for the mission of promoting sanctity of the family, solidarity of the
Church in America, a culture of life, and a civilization of love.
Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in Mexico as the pregnant Mother of God to Saint Juan Diego, an
Indian, in 1531. She left a Miraculous Image of her appearance on his cactus fiber cloak which still exists
today and can be seen by all at the Basilica near Mexico City.
Our Lady came to offer faith, hope and consolation to the oppressed Indians. She put an end to the
human sacrifice of the Aztecs and converted nine million Indians in the next nine years.
Pope John Paul II recognized the evangelistic role of Our Lady of Guadalupe when he prayed the the
Guadalupe Shrine would be a center “from which the light of the gospel of Christ will shine out over the
whole world by means of the Miraculous Image of His Mother.”
Mothers’ Day, May 13
“Bring Flowers of the Fairest”
When you come to Mass next weekend,
bring flowers for Mary and lay
them at the feet of the statue of the
Blessed Virgin Mary before Mass
begins as we sing a hymn to Our Lady.
By honoring Mary, we honor our
own mothers (whether living or dead)
and ultimately we honor the Creator of
all mothers. Mary leads us to Jesus and, like a good mother,
shows us the face of God in her goodness and in her care for us.
Join us at Mass on Saturday or Sunday, May 12 or 13, as we
“bring flowers of the fairest to the loveliest rose of the vale!”
2112 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
Pledge Report
Monthly pledge payments for the CMAA pledges should be
made as soon as possible. It is very important that these
pledges be paid so that our parish will reach our goal. Once we
have reached our goal in paid pledges, 50% of the additional
funds received will be returned to the parish for our use.
Parish Goal: $99,693
Amount Pledged: $87,398
Amount Paid: $63,858.50
Remaining Balance: $12,295.00
Fifth Sunday of Easter
Most grape pruning takes place during the winter, after the harvest has been brought in and before the first buds break in the spring.
While most home gardeners are afraid to cut back the vines to an appropriate degree, skilled pruners have no such hesitation As the
new shoots sprout out, vine tenders will take to the fields to cut away excessive growth. As the season continues, they will even pull
off individual leaves to ensure that the strength and vigor of the vine goes to producing the best fruit.
The description that Jesus offers in today’s Gospel is not much different from what happens in vineyards today. In His day, that
same thing was happening, and so when He described the connection that exists between the believer and Himself, His hearers knew
exactly what He meant. While we easily understand that a branch must remain connected to bear fruit, most of us are far removed
from the regular practice of viniculture. We don’t have the instant comprehension of how necessary it is for the vines to be pruned
and cut back. Cutting back is so essential, that without it vines will eventually grow wild and produce almost nothing.
Lent was the season in which we were to get our spiritual life in order, to prune ourselves a bit by reigning in our desires and not
letting things get out of hand. We are now a month after Easter. It might be a good time to reflect back on those Lenten resolutions
and see if any of them are still working. Prayer and almsgiving are always in season.
MANNA
R.E. & Visitation School Tuition Assistance Program
This past week 38 Visitation Grade School and other organization
families purchased $12,575 in gift certificates through our
MANNA program. The earned tuition credit for the past week
was $683. It would be a tremendous help to have more Visitation
families participate to a greater degree in our program. We all
buy groceries, dine out and shop at department stores. When you
purchase $100 in gift certificates through our program, you are
getting exactly $100 in certificate value. The certificate discount
is returned to participating families in the form of a tuition credit.
There is absolutely NO cost to you for using this program.
Visitation school families who participate receive the discount in
a tuition credit. When non–school families participate, the
school benefits. The larger the volume of certificates we can purchase,
the greater the discount.
Our program has exceeded annual sales of nearly $100,000 in
Scholar Dollars. This is more than any other school in Elmhurst.
Just think about this. Approximately $9,000 in tuition credit has
been earned by our school families from the sales of this one certificate.
The scholar dollars may be used at any of over 80 City
Centre participating stores and restaurants at a huge 9% discount.
For every $100 in Scholar Dollars purchased through our
program, $9 is earned in credit toward your family tuition. For
your convenience, the participating stores and restaurants are
printed on the reverse side of the certificate. We are extremely
grateful to the City of Elmhurst for inviting Visitation School
into this program. Please help to return the favor by doing most
of your shopping in your local community and by thanking the
stores for giving up a part of their profit by participating in the
Scholar Dollar Program.
Now you can visit the school website (www.visitationelmhurst.org)
to view or print our most recent updated
SPRED
SPRED (Special Religious Development) is a program in which persons who are developmentally disabled come together
with a spiritual friend/catechist to share a one–on–one relationship and form with others a small faith community.
SPRED fosters and nourishes spiritual and personal growth by helping those with developmental disabilities discover
God’s action and presence in their lives. SPRED gives developmentally disabled parishioners an opportunity for celebration
and worship and prepares them for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist) and Penance.
SPRED serves age groups from children to adults (6–10 years old, 11–16 years old, 17–21 years old, and 22
years and older).
If you would like to learn more about this program or know of a child or an adult with special needs that would be interested
joining a SPRED group, please contact Melanie Schneider at 630-782-0868.
Visitation Parish Catholic Reading Club
Reed of God by Caryll Houselander
In accord with the
Church’s dedication of the
month of May to special
devotion to the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the Visitation
Parish Catholic Reading
Club has chosen to read
Caryll Houselander’s 1944
classic of Mariology, Reed
of God, for its May meeting.
In this series of meditations
on episodes from the
life of Mary, Miss
Houselander applies the eye
of an artist and the ear of a poet to reflections on the mysteries
of the life of our Lady. Noting that very little about
her life is explicit in Scripture, Miss Houselander suggests
that this lack of detail about the history and personality of
Mary enables her to be an icon for every human being. Her
gentle and sometimes humorous insights explore the qualities
of the Mother of Jesus that made her the perfect “reed
of God,” an expectant channel for the breath and music of
our Lord and suggest ways in which each one of us is called
to be the same.
The Reading Club will meet on Thursday, May 17,
from 9:30 until 11:30 A.M. in the Fireside Room in the
Parish Center. For a copy of the study guide for this session
or for further information about the Reading Club,
please call Renee Regole at 630-832-7903.
Visitation School Enthrones the Sacred Heart of Jesus
April 20, 2012 marked a very special day for Visitation School. On that day, during an all school Mass, the Visitation students
and staff enthroned the Sacred Heart of Jesus as “King” of the Visitation School family. By this enthronement, the students
and staff agreed to make a covenant of love with Jesus, acknowledge Him as their Lord and Savior, and dedicate themselves
to His Divine Heart.
During Father Scott Huggins’s homily, he spoke to the students, teachers and congregation about how this day was special
because as Jesus has given His Heart to each one of us. Each member of Visitation School was giving his/her heart to Jesus
through daily prayer, regular and more frequent attendance at Mass and receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Father Huggins
explained that God shows His love for us by giving us many graces and Jesus loves us even with our sins. Jesus shows us His
mercy and salvation. “When you offer your heart to others, you respond to their needs.” We offer our hearts to Jesus and Jesus
always shows us His everlasting love and mercy for us. Our promises to the Sacred Heart of Jesus flow from how the Lord
loves us and how we live out our lives by loving the Lord.
Following the Mass, Sister Thomas Leo Monahan, O.P. recalled how important devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was
in her family as she was growing up. Her family enthroned their home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and they had a picture of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus prominently displayed in their home as a centerpiece for family prayer. The picture reminded them
that Jesus was the “King” of their family, and was a source of numerous blessings for her family, which continue to the present
day. Sister Thomas Leo explained how this same Sacred Heart of Jesus picture is now prominently displayed at her
niece’s home and is a continued source of grace.
In 1647, the Sacred Heart of Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary of Alacoque and He gave her the mission of establishing
the Sacred Heart of Jesus devotion. As a young child, she possessed an intense love for the Blessed Sacrament and spent
time in prayer throughout her day. Like St. Margaret Mary, develop and nurture your prayer life by daily prayer, receiving
Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, and frequent visits to the Adoration Chapel. Enthrone the Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home
and you, too, will experience the graces and love that the Lord has just for you even in these challenging times.
Prayer Quilt Ministry
Tuesday, May 8, 9:00 A.M.
The Prayer Quilt Ministry would like to encourage all parishioners to make us aware of those who are going through a significant
difficulty and who may benefit from the prayers of our congregation and the tangible evidence of those prayers in the form of the
prayer quilts. The recipients of the prayer quilts may be going through a health issue, facing surgery, be in the military (or just returned
from military duty), dealing with grief, emotional concerns, etc. They do not have to be members of Visitation Parish. The recipient
MUST agree to accept the prayer quilt. If you or someone you know would benefit from a prayer quilt, please feel free to contact the
office and ask that someone from the prayer quilt ministry contact you. Thank you.
We gather in the Parish Center on the second Tuesday of each month from 9:00 A.M.–Noon and on the fourth Thursday of
each month from 6:30–9:30 P.M. to make prayer quilts. Please consider joining this new ministry.
efforts of our mother/daughter team, Carlotta Lawton and Karen
Lawton Russ. The “Lawton Ladies” did an outstanding job
chairing this event for the CCW. Additional thanks go to our
Raffle Chairwomen, Jane Fitzgerald and Shannon Keating. The
raffle items available were spectacular and truly added to the
success of the evening. Thanks also to Courtney Braafhart and
Margaret Hill who assisted with the raffles. A BIG THANKS to
ALL our VIS volunteers who worked hard to make the evening
a huge success!
We are truly grateful to the businesses and families who once
