Giving back

Whyman is giving something 

back to the community by being 

involved with indigenous youth at 

the Port Augusta Gaol. 

“It’s nothing too structured but it is 

just a good opportunity to give 

something back through football,’’ 

he said. 

“We help out with umpiring 

their games, run training and answer 

questions. 

“It’s all pretty laid back.’’ 

Whyman, 26, said that since he 

moved from Echuca to Melbourne 

for football, he had worked in some 

capacity with people at risk of being 

or who were already incarcerated. 

He said his hopes for indigenous 

youth in the future were for them to 

have a good education, a good job, 

a healthy lifestyle and a strong 

stable family. 

“I’m just trying to achieve the 

above things. I’m pleased if people, 

whether they be black, white or 

green, take some sort of inspiration 

from me. 

“The rest will take care of itself.’’ 

Whyman, who studies commerce 

at Adelaide University and lives 

at Prospect, joined the Roosters 

last year. 

He has played mainly as a forward 

since his debut at Prospect Oval 

and is considered a real jokester at 

the club. 

“Whether it’s country or State 

League football, having a good time 

is my main objective. 

“I was influenced to try my luck in 

the SANFL by Rhys Archard, the 

fattest league medallist in history; 

Jimmy Allan, the hairiest medallist 

in history; Scott McGlone, the loosest 

backman in the league and Daniel 

Elstone, the slowest footballer on 

two legs. 

“They are all friends of mine and 

they said the girls hang off league 

footballers in Adelaide, which has 

been proven incorrect. We are all 

still single.’’ 

He said he hoped North Adelaide 

would play to its potential this year 

as it battled for a berth in the Finals. 

It has been a long journey to the 

SANFL for Whyman, who was born 

in Echuca in Victoria. 

He moved to Melbourne after 

being rookie listed in 2001. 

Whyman had one year on 

Hawthorn’s rookie list and played 

three years for North Ballarat before 

he spent two years on North 

Melbourne’s senior list. 

Now 178cm and 77kg, he played 

his junior football with the Echuca 

Bombers in the Goulburn Valley 

Football League. 

Apart from his football, study and 

work with indigenous youth, 

Whyman is interested in collecting 

rare stamps which is a change in 

tempo for him.

more than a game 

The world of sport can be a trip 

through an emotional jungle. 

Players and officials come and go 

and so too do the coaches. Is there 

a correct process to end the reign 

of the man who has provided the 

messages to the troops 

The cut will always be deep and 

the boss is not the only one who 

feels the sharp pain. The flow on is 

full on. 

If the leader has children there 

will be comments made in the 

school yard like: What happened to 

your Dad Wasn’t he good enough 

for the job The wife will also feel 

much pain. The change in lifestyle 

will be dramatic. 

We all know it’s just a game. But to 

many of us, it means so much. We 

live and breathe the game we love. 

Now it is the time to search for the 

next person. All of a sudden the 

onus will switch to another who has 

aspirations to reach the top. Mark 

Williams walks away with a very 

impressive record – he is a 

premiership coach! He is also a 

husband and a father. Life goes on!

Night Grand Final 

Talk continues to bubble about 

when is the best time for the Grand 

Final to be played. I love the 

thought of a Saturday night. The 

clubs involved could have their 

functions during the morning and 

gather together for the climax of the 

season at AAMI Stadium. 

The curtain raiser could start at 

around 4pm. What a night – think 

about it. 

It is a guarantee that the AFL will 

go down the night Grand Final road 

in the future so why don’t we get in 

first By the way, what are we going 

to do next year if the AFL decides 

to go ahead with the Grand Final on 

the first Saturday in October Lets 

put our thinking caps on now.

The wrap 

The wind was a factor last week. 

Boy oh boy didn’t it blow! Most 

players will say that they hate the 

breeze and would much prefer the 

rain. The cold weather might be 

with us for a while so you need to 

get out the scarves and the beanies 

and rug up. 

That is one of the real positives if 

the weather is icy. Out will come 

the fashion statements from the 

bottom of the cupboards and the 

fans will all look a treat. 

A pat on the back to all of the 

cheer squads doing the rounds in 

the League. They go to lots of 

trouble to get everything organised 

for their heroes and often stand in 

the pouring rain as the players run 

on to the ground. Their dance 

routines are slick and they really 

seem to enjoy the moments. 

Sturt kept alive its top 5 hopes 

with a bold win in the breeze. Stat 

men should get on the phone to 

Richie Benaud. The crowd was 

2222. North kicked away early and 

grabbed two valuable points 

against Port. West Adelaide started 

slowly but got involved and did the 

damage against South and 

Norwood jumped to second by 

winning on the Sunday. 

The best thing about the round 

was the reality that upsets are the 

run of the mill. Don’t be surprised if 

the bottom teams are in the mix 

more than once or twice in the run 

up to the Finals. 

Let me hear from you! 

Now readers I need some help. In 

my role as the ghost who talks I 

have visited all SANFL grounds 

and I always take my radio with me. 

I hear expressions like: down to the 

wire, under the hammer, under the 

pump etc. What do they all mean 

Can you help me and do you have 

your favourite sayings Be creative 

and drop a line to the cave. 

As the Finals approach teams will 

be relying so much on the medical 

staff to do the extra yards to keep 

the best team on the park. Niggles 

will be clearly evident and the 

treatment will be so vital as we 

look towards September. 

All coaches say that you cannot 

risk taking injured players into 

a Finals campaign. I know that 

they mean what they say but I 

am sure little niggles wouldn’t 

prevent certain players from 

being selected. 

Pain killers will be produced from 

the first aid kit and every course of 

action will take place to ensure the 

best team is ready for action. On 

that note I need to know the odd 

sorts of foods that are demolished 

after the game – snakes, pizzas 

and lollies of all shapes and sizes 

plus the fluid intake to replace 

what would have been an 

exhausting afternoon galloping 

around the football ground. 

There is no doubt the staff that 

monitor what is eaten and also 

consumed via the bottle are also 

very important. Players know their 

exact weight and levels of fat and if 

they deviate from that then they 

have to face the music. 

It’s nearing the end of the year 

and some players will be 

considering retiring. Tough 

decisions need to be made about 

who will stay and who will be 

shown the door. Contracts need to 

signed and some will be torn up. 

Players will be hurt and lives will 

change! I am serious. Football is 

only a sport but it is a real passion 

to the Phantom 

By the way... congratulations to 

the Adelaide Thunderbirds on 

winning the Trans Tasman Netball 

Championship! In a tough week for 

Port that victory was one of the 

few positives. I am off to check the 

post box!

LETTERS TO THE CAVE 

Dear Phantom, 

Where SANFL Finals matches 

are played often comes up for 

discussion. There are some 

thoughts that they could be 

played at suburban ovals. I do 

not believe that this will enhance 

crowds or the spectacle. Finals 

at Adelaide Oval over the past 

decade have been well attended 

for the Sunday doubleheaders 

and I can’t wait for the new 

western grandstand to be 

completed. Closeness to the CBD, 

central locality to the majority of 

the population and public 

transport are all factors that 

will encourage bigger crowds. 

Suburban ovals also lack 

much of the creature comforts 

many spectators come to 

expect nowadays. 

As a Norwood supporter I 

am happy with how we are 

going and believe we can make 

the Finals. I can’t wait to head 

down to AAMI Stadium for 

hopefully three or four weeks of 

Finals this year.

summerton searches for 

spinal injury cure By Rob Bidmeade 

Steven Summerton 

STAR Port Adelaide Magpies 

midfielder Steven Summerton is 

very thankful that he has the 

fitness and good health to be able 

to play in the SANFL competition. 

That is why Summerton, 22, 

has been working with the Neil 

Sachse Foundation since the start 

of the year. 

“My role is to raise money to help 

create the cure for spinal cord 

injury,’’ he said. 

Summerton said that he became 

involved through the general 

manager Jay Richards, who gave 

him the opportunity to work for the 

Neil Sachse Foundation. 

“It definitely makes me very 

grateful to be able to do simple 

everyday tasks which people with 

spinal injuries struggle with. 

“Knowing (former North Adelaide 

and Footscray footballer) Neil 

Sachse (now a quadriplegic) and 

the struggles he has to go through 

just to get up and get ready for 

work every day, I have a huge 

amount of respect and sympathy 

for him and all people who suffer 

from spinal injuries. 

“It’s a credit to them and 

especially Neil who remains very 

positive and still loves to have a 

laugh and a joke!’’ 

Summerton, 177cm and 76kg, has 

played 77 games for the Magpies 

since his debut in round 14 against 

Sturt in 2006, said rookie coach 

Tony Bamford had settled in very 

well to his new role this season. 

“He has earned everyone’s 

respect by the way he goes about 

his business. 

“He is very professional and 

very organised. 

“(Former coach) Tim Ginever has 

been my only other League coach 

and he has also had a big impact 

on my football.’’ 

Summerton said the morale at the 

club was very upbeat despite the 

problems on and off the field with 

the lack of success and doubts 

about the financial viability of the 

Magpies to continue in the SANFL. 

“We have a great mixture of young 

and old players and we are a very 

close group. 

“The players don’t take any notice 

of what is happening off the field 

because that sort of stuff is out of 

our control.’’ 

On his ambitions, Summerton said 

if he was given the chance to play 

AFL he would love to do it. 

“It has always been a dream and I 

would love to be a full-time 

footballer. If I was given the chance 

to join an AFL club and train every 

day I think it would definitely make 

me a much better footballer.’’ 

Summerton has come up through 

the ranks at Alberton from the 

under 13s to the Reserves and 

then the League team. 

He played his junior football at 

North Haven and also played 

college football for St Michael’s. 

Neil Sachse Foundation general 

manager Jay Richards said that 

Summerton had settled in well to 

his role with the Foundation. 

He said that the midfielder 

enjoyed the culture and he also 

enjoyed the opportunity to learn 

how the business world in South 

Australia functioned. 

“Steven is involved in promoting 

the business partnership directory 

initiative which is an interactive 

website,’’ Richards said. 

“It helps promote the networking 

of business to each other as well as 

to the general public while raising 

funds for the Foundation.’’ 

Richards said that Summerton 

had a real fondness for Neil Sachse 

and he was proud to be involved 

with the Foundation in its drive to 

raise funds for research into spinal 

cord injuries. 

Neil Sachse was a young 

man when he was injured 

playing Australian Rules with 

Footscray (now the Western 

Bulldogs) and he has never 

walked again. 

Since his 1975 accident, 

thousands of young men and 

women have been involved in 

similar accidents which 

damaged their spinal cord on 

sports grounds, roads, at work 

or even at home. 

More than 10,000 people with 

spinal cord injury are living in 

the community, with 400 new 

cases occurring every year. 

Today they will never walk 

again. 

Neil Sachse lives for the day 

that people with spinal cord 

injury will walk again. 

He established the Neil Sachse 

Foundation as a first step to 

curing spinal cord injury.

Brett Zorzi celebrated his 100th

The West End SA Football Hall of Fame Presentation 

Dinner is one of the most prestigious nights on the 

sporting calendar. The invite-only black tie event will be 

held at AAMI Stadium on Thursday, August 5. 

Former legends such as Lindsay Head, Barrie 

Robran, Russell Ebert and Bob Hank are among those 

previously inducted into the Hall of Fame.
