VISITATION MISSION STATEMENT
Visitation Parish, a Roman Catholic Community in the Diocese of Joliet-in-Illinois, seeks to draw all to Jesus Christ, revelation
of the Father and font of the Holy Spirit, by celebrating the Sacraments, educating people of all ages in the Truths of the
Catholic Faith, and reaching out to those who are physically, emotionally or spiritually in need.
Visits to the Sick
Attend our Welcome Coffee on the last Sunday of every month after the 10:00 A.M. Mass to register,
learn about our ministries and programs and meet our priests and some of our parish family.
Will be every Sunday at 1:30 P.M. Parents are required to take Baptismal Class beforehand. Classes
are held every other month, so please plan ahead. Call Rectory for information.
Arrangements must be made at the Rectory at least six months in advance. Please contact the
church before making any other arrangements. Weddings scheduled at 12:00 & 2:00 P.M. on
Saturday. NO Sunday Weddings.
It is the responsibility of the parish to bury their dead. The funeral director will contact the parish
regarding arrangements. No specific offering is required for the parish in connection with the
funeral liturgy.
The Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist, is available 24 hours a day for private
prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed on the Altar. The Chapel is located in the
Convent building (south of the church).
Devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of those who suffer with cancer will be held
the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 P.M. in the church.
Due to changes in hospital admitting policies, it is necessary to inform the Rectory when hospitalized
parishioners would like a visit from a priest or deacon. Catholic chaplains are assigned to area
hospitals to administer the Sacraments. Visitation parish priests visit Elmhurst Hospital twice a
week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

PARISH BUSINESS
www.FrHuggins.com
In today’s Gospel Jesus continues teaching through
parables. Last Sunday’s Gospel was the parable of the
sower and the seed which spoke to us of the need to prepare
our lives to receive the Word of God. The question
asked was whether our life is like a rich soil ready to
receive God’s Word.
Beginning this week, I invite you to check out a new
parish website. The site is simply called, The Pastor’s
Website, and can be found at www.FrHuggins.com.
The site is a supplement to our official website,
www.visitationparish.org. I hope The Pastor’s Website
will become another resource to communicate with
you about our parish, but more importantly to enrich
your spiritual life and to help you better receive God’s
Word. Jesus asked his followers if they were ready to
sow the seed of faith. May you find The Pastor’s Website
another tool to receive God’s Word.
We are Revising
Our Armed Forces Prayer List
For several years the names of family members of our
parishioners who are currently serving in our armed services
have been published in our bulletin on a prayer list.
Occasionally we receive a request to change a rank or
place of service, or to delete a name. However, the majority
of the names have remained on the list with no changes
since it began.
In an effort to have an accurate listing we are asking
that you contact us by August 1, 2011, if you wish to
have the name of your loved one remain on the list.
After that time we will revise the list to reflect only those
names for which we have current and accurate information.
You may also call if you have any concerns or questions.
Thank you.
supporting the projects and decisions raised by the pastor.
Members of the council bring talents in planning and ideageneration,
represent different perspectives in the parish and
are committed to attending monthly meetings and working
together.
If you are interested in learning more about the Parish
Pastoral Council, or if you would like to be considered as a
MANNA
R.E. & Visitation School Tuition Assistance Program
This past week 43 Visitation Grade School and 2
Religious Education families purchased $10,232 and $300
in gift certificates through our MANNA program.
When the school year comes to an end, please keep in
mind that our program never ends. The days and hours of
operation during the summer months remain the same as
throughout the school year.
The MANNA team is always open to new ideas that
will improve our program and bring in more participants
to enjoy the benefits we have to offer—‘free’ money
earned to apply toward tuition costs. Maybe each of you
could pick up certificates for a friend not able to visit our
Walk–in Service or could encourage others as to the ease
of using the program. We can all play a big part in the
success we are having with our program and could even
help it to grow more.
Also, anyone not now participating in our program or
whose children have finished school may purchase gift cards
and designate the earned credit for the Capital Campaign.
The campaign’s goal is within sight. It is our hope that
through this added effort, our program will be doing its’ part
in supporting the campaign.
Now you can visit the school website (www.visitationelmhurst.org)
to view or print our most recent updated
Monthly Devotions in Honor of St. Peregrine
Patron of those who suffer from Cancer
and Other Chronic or Incurable Diseases
This Tuesday, July 19, is the third
Tuesday of the month and we will
hold our monthly devotions in honor
of Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of
those who suffer from cancer and
other chronic or incurable diseases.
Canonized a Saint on December 27,
1726, St. Peregrine has been named
the Patron Saint of those who suffer
from cancer. The power of his intercession
is known to be great.
Join us Tuesday evening at 7:00
P.M. for the devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine. The
blessing of the sick with the relic of Saint Peregrine will be
given and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will also
be a part of the evening service. If you or someone you
know suffers from cancer or any other chronic or incurable
disease, join us Tuesday evening for prayer and to ask for
healing, an increase in faith, acceptance of God’s will and
strength to bear whatever God asks of you.
The Blessing of Silence
Fr. Nouwen says the most important place we receive a blessing
is through prayer: “The real ‘work’ of prayer,” he says, “is to
become silent and listen to the voice that says good things about
me.” This is hard. We’re afraid of silence because we’re afraid
we’ll hear just the opposite— that we’re no good; that no matter
how hard we try, we’ll just never measure up. For many of us,
silence doesn’t lead to blessing; it leads to shame. So in order to
avoid encountering the “critical parent,” we avoid the silence.
We go to prayer and we chatter like a chipmunk protecting her
precious stash of shame–filled acorns.
Instead, Fr. Nouwen says, we have to silence the voices
that question our goodness and trust that in silence, we will
learn to hear again the voice of blessing. This is partly why
prayer and Eucharistic adoration are so challenging and so
important—because in the silence we can learn to hear again
the voice of blessing. Fr. Nouwen reminds us: “It is not easy
to enter into the silence and reach beyond the many boisterous
and demanding voices of our world and to discover there
the small intimate voice saying: ‘You are my Beloved Child,
on you my favor rests.’
Pope John Paul II said something that struck all who heard it:
“We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the
sum of the Father’s love.” His thoughts emerged from his
moments of silence before the Father, moments in which he
experienced the Father’s love and knew he was blessed.
The next time you go to the adoration chapel, close your eyes
for a moment and experience this reality: You are not the sum of
your weaknesses and failures. You are the sum of the Father’s
love. He has chosen you. You are blessed. His Spirit rests on
you. (from When Life Doesn’t Go Your Way)
The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. To register as a weekly adorer, please call Gail or Owen
at 630-573-0033.
As an Eagle Scout Project of parishioner Michael
McLean (Vis ‘08), there is a plan to erect outdoor Stations
of the Cross on the parish grounds.
Some fundraising is necessary to cover the costs. Anyone
who would like to make a donation for outdoor Stations of
the Cross may specifically designate or specify that it is for
this project. Donations may be delivered to the rectory or to
Fr. Scott. Thank you.
Please Join Us To Pray For Our Priests
Join us on Monday evenings in the Church at 7:00 P.M. to
pray for our priests. We pray the rosary and the Divine
Mercy Chaplet followed by special prayers for priests,
Benediction and a blessing with the St. Peregrine relic.
Any group who wishes to pray for a special intention
on a weekly or monthly basis can join us on Mondays at
7:00 P.M. For questions or information, please call me at
The Classified Section
Many of our parishioners are affected by unemployment. Visitation’s “Classified Section” is a response to aid in networking
within the parish community. This section lists people who need jobs by advertising only information pertinent to work.
Those who need work may contact Deacon Tony at the Rectory and send him their resumes. We will keep them confidential
and publicize the skill sets anonymously. Our hope is that potential employers or friends of potential employers within this
parish may be able to help. If an employer contacts the parish office, Deacon Tony will act as the liaison for them. A more
extensive list and more information and resources are now available via our website.
Peer Support Group Facilitator Training
Successful peer support groups have skillful facilitators.
Becoming a skillful facilitator is a process that takes
time and practice. On August 20, The Center for Family
Ministry is sponsoring a facilitator training for churchsponsored
divorce, bereavement and other hurting/healing
support groups. Desirée Marciani, associate director of
The Center for Family Ministry, who works with the hurting/healing
ministries, and her husband, Deacon Tom
Marciani, who is a hospice chaplain, will lead this training
at St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville. Both
Desiree and Tom have over sixteen years of divorce and
bereavement ministry experience.
The training is for those who are new facilitators of
self–help small group sharing sessions as well as those
who wish to brush up on their facilitating skills. Agenda
items include the role of the facilitator, communication,
listening skills, support group ground rules, dealing with
challenging situations and practice. Check–in begins at
8:30 A.M. Training starts at 9:00 A.M. and concludes at
4:00 P.M. The $20 fee covers continental breakfast, lunch
and a student manual. Registrations are requested by
August 15.
