Morning<br />

PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME<br />

Introduction to site:<br />

• Meet at Moorland Discovery Centre<br />

• Introduction to leaders and volunteers<br />

• Where have <strong>the</strong>y come to Introduction to National Park<br />

and Longshaw Estate<br />

• Objectives and outcomes of <strong>the</strong> day<br />

• Staying safe<br />

Morning activities (can be done as a half day option):<br />

• Walk onto site, gaining an overview of Longshaw’s<br />

various habitats on <strong>the</strong> way.<br />

• Introduction to moorland and <strong>the</strong> moorland landscape.<br />

• Comparing <strong>the</strong> vegetation of three moorland areas using<br />

quadrates and identification keys.<br />

• How and why moorlands are managed.<br />

• Moorland birds and animals activities<br />

The morning’s walk is about 1 ¼ miles long. This day can be<br />

done as a long day walk with a picnic lunch is wea<strong>the</strong>r allows.<br />

Please discuss this option with centre staff.<br />

• Objectives and outcomes of <strong>the</strong> afternoon<br />

Location The Moorland Discovery<br />

Centre is in <strong>the</strong> grounds of <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Trust Longshaw Estate. The site is 7 ½<br />

miles from Sheffield on <strong>the</strong> A6187<br />

postcode S11 7TZ.<br />

Arrival mini busses and cars can park<br />

in <strong>the</strong> main car park. Coaches should<br />

drop off at <strong>the</strong> main gate on <strong>the</strong> B6521<br />

Grindle<strong>for</strong>d Rd. Public transport is also<br />

available to <strong>the</strong> site.<br />

Safety All our activities and sites are<br />

risk assessed. Risk assessments and<br />

health and safety in<strong>for</strong>mation can be<br />

downloaded at:<br />

Our staff to student ratios vary<br />

depending on age, and ability of <strong>the</strong><br />

group and activities booked. All our<br />

leaders are fist aid qualified.<br />

Clothing Please ensure that children<br />

are wearing warm outdoor clothing.<br />

Waterproof jacket, wellies or stout<br />

shoes are advised <strong>for</strong> all visits.<br />

Behaviour Teachers are responsible<br />

<strong>for</strong> good behaviour, discipline & lunch<br />

time supervision.<br />

Medical In<strong>for</strong>mation Please let us<br />

know about any allergies, medical<br />

conditions or special needs.<br />

Payment Please note you will be<br />

invoiced after your visit <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

number of children on <strong>the</strong> day.


Afternoon activities (<strong>for</strong> full day option):<br />

• Moorland animals and plants and <strong>the</strong>ir adaptations to living in<br />

moorland areas.<br />

• A special place - pairs discussion about <strong>the</strong> landscape.<br />

• Moorland food chains activities.<br />

LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />

Most students will:<br />

• Understand <strong>the</strong> moorland habitat is rare and special.<br />

• Have had hands on experience of basic field work techniques<br />

and keys<br />

• Have had hand on experience investigating <strong>the</strong> habitat<br />

• Make observations about <strong>the</strong> environment and <strong>the</strong> reasons<br />

certain plants and animals live in this habitat.<br />

• Be able to identify some key moorland plants and animals.<br />

• Understand a basic moorland food chain.<br />

Some students will:<br />

• Understand that a moorland is a managed habitat.<br />

• Understand <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>the</strong> Moorland environment.<br />

• Understand how to collect date in <strong>the</strong> environment.<br />

• Have had an opportunity to discuss what <strong>the</strong>y have found<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir peers.<br />

• Use vocabulary such as camouflage, adaptation and<br />

understand <strong>the</strong>re meaning.<br />

LINKS<br />

Literacy – Use of new words and terminology. Children are<br />

introduced to some technical terms and specialist vocabulary.<br />

Cancellation Please let us know as<br />

soon as possible if you have to cancel<br />

or if your numbers change<br />

significantly.<br />

Wea<strong>the</strong>r We continue activities in all<br />

but <strong>the</strong> very worst wea<strong>the</strong>r so please<br />

make sure everyone comes prepared to<br />

be outside in <strong>the</strong> rain and cold!<br />

Shop Goodie bags can be provide <strong>for</strong><br />

you children with prior booking. These<br />

are at a cost of £3 per bag. Contents<br />

may vary. Please bring <strong>the</strong> money on<br />

<strong>the</strong> day.<br />

Insurance Our education service is<br />

covered by £10 million Public Liability<br />

Insurance Policy. Please ensure that<br />

your school or LEA has appropriate<br />

insurance cover.<br />

Prior Learning It is helpful if <strong>the</strong><br />

children are familiar with <strong>the</strong> concepts<br />

of a habitat and some countryside<br />

knowledge such as <strong>the</strong> Country Code.<br />

Follow-up Work For all our<br />

activities we enjoy receiving post visit<br />

letters or pictures from children. You<br />

Numeracy – Children will ga<strong>the</strong>r data as part of <strong>the</strong>ir visit which can<br />

be analysed back in school<br />

Geography –Activities link to mountain environments<br />

Citizenship – Some activities involve team working, sharing and<br />

taking turns with equipment.


Science – All activities support <strong>the</strong> development of an understanding<br />

around habitats, what is a health natural environment and<br />

understanding <strong>the</strong> adaptations <strong>for</strong> different habitats. As well as some<br />

basic scientific techniques.<br />

Thinking Skills – All activities promote independent enquiry,<br />

creative thinking, reflective learning, team working, self-management<br />

and effective participation.<br />

Citizenship – All activities involve team work, sharing, taking turns<br />

with equipment and care <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural world<br />

Evaluation We are always keen<br />

to get feed back from both you and<br />

<strong>the</strong> students. We will ask you to<br />

complete an evaluation <strong>for</strong>m at <strong>the</strong><br />
