The start of a fresh season brings 

new hopes and anticipation for 

what lies ahead, as every team 

heads into Round 1 on an equal 

playing field. It’s at this time of the 

year we wonder what’s in store for 

the season. 

Will Norwood win back-to-back 

flags for the first time since 1923, or 

can Sturt pull off a miracle last to 

first All nine SANFL teams will 

enter the new season with 

heightened expectations. 

The last time South Adelaide won 

the flag was in 1964, where they 

rose from bottom to top. The 

Panthers have flourished under 

coach Ron Fuller with a more 

competitive game but still lack 

consistency. If they can put it all 

together this season, that long 

awaited flag could become a reality. 

“We will be looking for 

improvement, especially in how we 

finish off games, which could be the 

key for us,” Fuller said. 

“Our footy last year was better than 

the previous season, when we 

played finals. Now it’s about 

maintaining an upward spiral and 

hanging in there in close games.” 

In 2012 South lost four games by 

six points or less and one by 13 

points, with just two victories from 

those five games. It was enough to 

lift the side from eighth to fifth spot. 

“Consistency is the key,” Fuller said. 

“Our challenge is to make it happen. 

If we can just finish off games a bit 

better and turn around those narrow 

losses, the rest will take care of itself. 

“The competition is so even, 

nothing is insurmountable and 

anything is possible. Like all clubs, 

we have had quite a few changes to 

our playing personnel, so how each 

side’s players adjust to the new 

environment will be a major issue in 

sorting out finals contenders.” 

For Norwood, the challenge is the 

same but with a little more pressure. 

The hunter has become the hunted, 

which brings a different dynamic. 

Although a proud club with the 

second best premiership record in 

the competition, the Redlegs have 

not won back-to-back flags since 

the 1920s. 

“The competition is so even, 

nothing is insurmountable and 

anything is possible.”

this time last season, to be 

competitive and give ourselves 

every chance of being a premiership

contender,” Norwood coach Nathan 

Bassett said. 

“There are some new players and 

some of the same faces but the 

expectation to win is still there. We 

just have to prepare as well as we 

can and look for improvements. A 

new season presents an opportunity 

to get better, which is what it should 

be about. 

“Other great clubs like Centrals 

recently, Port Adelaide, and Sturt in 

the 1960s had extended success. We 

have to make the most of our 

opportunities and strive for similar 

success.” 

Bassett is excited about the 

possibilities a new season offers, and 

has worked hard to structure 

trainings to help maximize the 

Redlegs chances of building on last 

season’s breakthrough premiership. 

While 2013 offers plenty of hope, 

2011 premier Woodville-West Torrens 

suffered a different fate, failing to win 

any of its first five games last year, 

although recovering to make the 

finals before losing in the first week. 

To win an exciting Grand Final 

against the perennial champions by 

three points and then have such a 

dismal start six months later can be a 

real roller-coaster ride – one the 

Eagles will be hoping to continue on 

in the opposite direction. 

“You look forward to every season 

but you just don’t know what’s in 

store until you have been tested in 

the season proper,” coach Michael 

Godden said. 

“The biggest unknown is in the 

number of major player turnovers at 

all the clubs. We should be better 

than last season, but what is our 

competition going to be like 

“Our number one goal before every 

game is to win. And clearly for us, to 

win Round 1 is a major priority at the 

moment.” 

Over recent seasons, trial form 

has not been a true reflection of how 

sides are shaping up, although they 

give coaches an opportunity 

to try different things without 

worrying too much about the 

scoreboard. 

But once the minor round begins 

and the premiership becomes 

reality, there is a much more 

competitive edge to games, 

attracting supporters to keep 

returning to watch their team. 

“For us trial games are just that, a 

chance to look at various things,” 

Godden said. “This year there has 

been a lot I liked and a lot I didn’t, 

but we will make adjustments and 

go into the season with a lot of 

optimism. 

“From last season, top team 

Norwood looks to be better and 

probably will be the measuring 

stick, while the rest will battle 

it out. I’m always confident of 

making the finals, although there 

are a lot of steps along the 

way. 

“It’s a new era, but we are still a 

viable competition producing AFL 

quality players. The SANFL has 

a niche market with plenty of 

support, so we must be doing 

something right. Bring on the 

new season!”

FOOTY STILL ON 

THE AGENDA BY ROBERT LAIDLAW 

Chris and James Gowans, for the 

first time this millennium, will 

not be playing football with Central 

District. 

They will, however, be suiting up 

for another club! 

But before anyone gets too carried 

away, it’s not with a rival SANFL 

club or in another major 

competition. The duo are heading 

back home to Anglesea in country 

Victoria for half a dozen guest 

appearances in 2013. 

“We wanted to finish where we 

started our senior career and felt it 

was a good time just to throw on the 

boots to help out at our old 

stomping ground,” Chris said. 

“They have lost about 15 players 

and have a real young side. We met 

the coach at Christmas time and 

committed to come over and play a 

handful of home games. We don’t 

have to train, just play when we 

can.” 

Although brought up in Victoria, 

James and Chris are committed to 

their adopted State and have 

married Adelaide women, while 

their building business would be 

too hard to transplant interstate. 

Both Gowans boys will also be 

‘sharing’ duties at ABC TV as guest 

commentators this season, and are 

looking forward to getting out to a 

few ‘neutral’ games. 

“While yes, we will be going home 

a few times to play footy, we 

normally head there a few times a 

season anyway, on byes and that, so 

it will not be much different to other 

years,” Chris said. 

“And we have been out to a couple 

of trial games and the feeling is 

pretty ordinary, we miss playing 

with the Dogs. At least we have 

Willo (Ryan Williams) and O’ey 

(Brayden O’Hara), two Central 

District players working for us so 

we keep up with the goss. 

“It’s hard to watch though. We 

didn’t think it was going to be this 

hard, as it’s not like we quit because 

we were injured.”

After retiring last season the twins 

were advised to take a year off 

before deciding what they wanted 

to do, but have no idea what their 

football involvement in the future 

could be. 

Both have good football brains but 

whether they could coach together 

is the big question, as arguing with 

opponents, team-mates and 

eachother on the field is legendary. 

“We want to stay involved and 

perhaps eventually coach,” Chris 

said. “Right now our focus is on 

work and maybe watch other teams. 

“Footy has been a big part of our 

lives, but perhaps we will like the 

change of lifestyle too much and 

like doing nothing. It’s all work at the 

moment. 

“Our business is set up here and is 

going okay. There are a lot of 

builders and not much work but we 

are keeping our heads above water. 

It’s not too bad, except all the 

bookwork and quotes are a bit of a 

pain.” 

Over the past couple of years both 

twins have married. James and his 

wife Christie took their honeymoon 

before last season, while Chris and 

Rikki are heading to Europe to 

celebrate their nuptials in July. 

So with work full on, travelling to 

Anglesea, some television 

appearances, as well as several 

other commitments, perhaps 

nothing much has changed at all for 

the Gowans. 

“The one thing we have learnt 

about is time management, and it is 

something we are working on,” 

Chris said. 

“We have so many things to 

balance but it is all good, it is all 

stuff we love to do. Work is full on at 

the moment, which is great, plus we 

are looking forward to getting home 

for some games. 

“Some of the old guys we used to 

play with at Angelsea are now 

watching games, so it will be great 

to catch up with them. Most of our 

mates there have followed our 

careers here and are very 

supportive. It will be good to give 

something back.” 

“Footy has been a big part of 

our lives, but perhaps we will 

like the change of lifestyle too 

much and like doing nothing.

the ghost that talks 

X-LOTTO V GRAND FINAL 

Well, here we are again. The 

footy boots are well and truly 

dusted, the jumpers put through their 

first cycle, and the strapping tape 

tainted. We’ve made it to Round 2. 

Did anyone read about the $4.2 

million X-Lotto ticket from the 

Riverland earlier this week I bet you 

all quickly checked your wallets, 

purses and handbags just in case 

you had completely forgotten your 

trip to the Riverland where you 

purchased a ticket in a Berri 

newsagency before driving back to 

Adelaide and wiping your memory 

clean of the whole ordeal… hey, it 

could happen. 

But after I had emptied my rubbish 

bins, checked the pockets of all my 

lycra suits, and realised I wasn’t the 

winner of the $4.2 million and could 

not yet retire to The Cave, I wondered 

if clubs often feel the same at the end 

of the season. 

The football year is long, hard and 

full of its ups and downs, and when 

the last siren calls at the end of the 

Grand Final, it all seems but a distant 

memory – except for the team holding 

the cup. 

Do the clubs who lose the finals 

wake up the next morning wondering 

– no, hoping – it was all a horrible 

dream And what about the team 

who lose the Grand Final They must 

check their pockets for days following 

the season’s end just to see if they 

did in fact win the $4.2 million ticket, 

or in this case, the golden cup. 

But, at least by now reality would 

have well and truly settled in for all 

nine clubs, ready for a new season 

and a fresh start. 

In other news, I read an inspiring 

article about a women who has taken 

a new approach to sharing her battle 

with breast cancer to help others. 

Kiki van de Laar has taken a series 

of photos of her experience fighting 

breast cancer, with a photo of her 

bandaged chest after a mastectomy 

published in The Advertiser on 

Tuesday. 

Reading her raw and moving story 

made me think about the things that 

really matter. Each week we head out 

to see our favourite teams play – we 

leave on a high from a win or with 

our head to the ground after a loss. 

Our weeks are filled with 

excitement, anxiety, disappointment 

and frustrations watching our teams 

ride the rollercoaster seasons all in a 

bid to take home the glory of the final 

cup. 

But when we read something as 

strong as Kiki’s story, we realise that 

while we are passionate about the 

game we love, it is at the end of the 

day, a game and there are other 

important things going on in the 

world around us that we should 

acknowledge and support. 

Don’t get me wrong, it’s fantastic to 

see our supporters out at the local 

ovals, sporting the trendy team 

colours and cheering for a club – 

football brings an important element 

of excitement, passion, tradition and 

community. But this weekend, we 

should take some time to remember 

the other things going on in the world 

around us – just like Kiki’s story 

reminds us. Get out there, help Kiki’s 

mission and raise awareness for 

breast cancer and prostate cancer.

TO THE CAVE 

“There weren’t many as ‘Hungry’ 

as Bartlett!! Full-forwards kicking 

100 goals a season back in the 

60s, 70s and 80s were common. If 

they were within range, they were 

meant to have a shot! 

Kevin Bartlett was a champion 

rover before becoming a goalhungry 

specialist forward, just as 

Leigh Matthews became late in his 

career. But ‘Lethal’ was never as 

hungry as ‘Hungry’. The closest I 

can think of in terms of a 

champion midfielder who 

converted into a prolific specialist 

forward late in his career was 

Neville Roberts, who played for 

West Torrens, went to Richmond 

in the VFL for a few years, came 

back to captain Torrens, then went 

to play under his Richmond mate 

Neil Balme at Norwood. I’m pretty 

sure he kicked 100 goals out of a 

forward pocket one year late in his 

playing days. I’ve just checked his 

stats on the Norwood FC website; 

in the early 80s he went 83, 111 

and 98 goals for three years in a 

row. Was he as hungry as Bartlett 

Probably not. Was anybody”

After the disappointment of not 

making the Grand Final side in 

2012, Rory began 2013 in great 

style. His ability to transfer defence 

into attack with his penetrating kick 

was great to see. His efforts were 

instrumental in West’s excellent 10 

goal third quarter against Central 

last weekend. Rory was able to win 

his own ball and deliver with
