One Coin Classic Movie Series - Gone with the<br />

Wind<br />

Watch the 1939 American historical epic Gone with the Wind on the big<br />

screen! Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh star in the film that tells a story of<br />

the American Civil War and reconstruction era from a Southern point of<br />

view. The four-hour epic won 8 Oscars and was one of the first movies to<br />

be shot in colour.<br />

2012 Latinoamerica Festival <strong>Nagoya</strong> Osu<br />

<br />

Various bands from across Latin America from the Caribbean to the<br />

Andes will be performing throughout the day in Osu. There are 12 groups<br />

and artists featuring a range of styles ranging from tango and salsa to<br />

traditional Andean music from Peru. There are also two “carnival style”<br />

parades through the Osu Shopping Arcade (13:40 – 14:40 & 15:40 –<br />

16:40).<br />

Hamlet <br />

Nameless Media and Productions Theatre (NMP Theatre) is a community theatre group bringing together a diverse and<br />

international team of <strong>Nagoya</strong>-based artists. Their second production of 2012 is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s<br />

Hamlet. This show will be presented with Japanese subtitles and directed by Carl Bradley.<br />

About: The King of Denmark is dead. Mourning the loss of his father, Prince Hamlet retreats into a world of solitude<br />

and despair. However, after discovering that his father was in fact violently murdered, Hamlet embarks on a cycle of<br />

destructive revenge that threatens to bring down the very state of Denmark itself.<br />

Encompassing political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection and violent action, tragic depth and wild<br />

humour, Hamlet is Shakespeare’s ‘poem unlimited’, a colossus in the story of the English language and the fullest<br />

expression of Shakespeare’s genius.<br />

OCEAN! Such a Wonderful Monsters' World - OCEAN!<br />

This special exhibition, celebrating the first anniversary of the opening of the <strong>Nagoya</strong> City Science<br />

Museum’s new wing, will introduce the evolution of sea creatures from 600 million years ago to<br />

the present day, highlighting their journey of evolution and history of diversity. <br />

<br />

All creatures living on Earth are descendants of creatures born in the oceans 300 million years ago<br />

that evolved over a long period of time. It is estimated that over 95 percent of marine creatures<br />

became extinct around 250 million years ago and 75 percent of all species became extinct around<br />

65 million years ago destroying a huge diversity of creatures many with a unique shape and<br />

appearance that many may describe as a “modern-day monster”. There are 300 exhibits on show<br />

including a 12m long plesiosauria “Loch Ness Monster”, an 18m long ancestor of the whale, and<br />

a coelacanth - a fish once thought extinct.<br />

Hiroshi Aoshima, known as “Mr. Blue Island” together with the <strong>Nagoya</strong> Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducting a<br />

special family concert, and using humour will introduce newcomers to classical music and orchestra. The program<br />

includes Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt - the music to the play by Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen.<br />

The Spring Special Exhibition - The Okaya Collection: The Prosperous Merchant Family's Artistic Sensibility<br />

<br />

This is a special exhibition commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the museum’s new wing and the 80 th anniversary of the Tokugawa Gardens.<br />

Eighty-eight treasured masterpieces of calligraphy, tea utensils and paintings of Edo Period, including Important Cultural Properties, were donated to<br />

the Tokugawa Art Museum in 1965 in accordance with the will of Sosuke OKAYA (1887-1965). The Okaya were one of the wealthiest merchant<br />

families in <strong>Nagoya</strong>. In 1669, the Okaya established a metalware shop in the castle town of <strong>Nagoya</strong> and today it operates as OKAYA & CO., LTD. With<br />

offices in 16 countries around the world. Since the initial viewing after the donation, this occasion marks the first time that these works will be publicly<br />

displayed all together.<br />

“NIC Nihongo no Kai” Japanese Course for<br />

The <strong>Center</strong>’s ever-popular program offers 7 types of classes<br />

ranging from conversation for beginners to kanji.<br />

Conversation classes: Kaiwa-kiso, Kaiwa-1, Kaiwa-2 (10:00,<br />

12:00), Kaiwa-3 (14:00).<br />

Writing Classes: Kana (14:00), Kanji-1 (10:00), Kanji-2 (12:00).<br />

The NIC’s Children’s Japanese Class <br />

This course is taught by volunteers and is designed for children (born between<br />

April 2, 1997 and April 1, 2006) whose native language is not Japanese. Students<br />

learn Japanese skills necessary for school and daily life. The spring term has 10,<br />

90-minute classes and runs every Sunday (10:00 - 11:30) from May 20 to July 22;<br />

1000 Yen covers all 10classes and there are only 30 places available.<br />

Applications will be accepted on Sunday, May 13 (09:45 - 10:15) at the <strong>Nagoya</strong><br />

<strong>International</strong> <strong>Center</strong> 4F, Lecture Room 3; fee collection will start at around 11:00.<br />

A parent or guardian should attend the application process and bring a filled out<br />

application form; part of the form needs to be filled out by the child’s school<br />

NIC’s Classroom for Global Citizen’s Program Needs YOU! <br />

Want to help us to create a globally aware <strong>Nagoya</strong> As part of its international understanding education program, NIC’s Classroom for Global<br />

Citizen’s program is looking for foreign instructors to visit schools and local organizations and introduce their home countries. We are looking for<br />

instructors who are able to communicate in Japanese, who are available during the day time. Successful applicants will be asked to attend training on<br />

Nagashino Kassen Nobori Matsuri<br />

An annual festival commemorating the 1575 Battle of Nagashino; one of<br />

the most important battles in Japanese history. Features a samurai<br />

parade (09:30 - 10:30), arquebus (flint-lock gun) displays throughout the<br />

day, as well as taiko drum and Yosakoi dance displays.<br />

You can also visit the Nagashino Castle Site Preservation Hall <br />

(adults 210 Yen, children 100 Yen) for to see maps, illustrations,<br />

weapons, and armour. A bilingual booklet is available from<br />

reception.<br />

Two language courses open to anyone residing, studying, or working in Aichi Prefecture will be available this spring at the <strong>International</strong> Student<br />

Illusions <br />

A selection of around 100 works of art from the Collection of the Royal<br />

Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and other museums including 50 works from<br />

renowned Belgian artist James Ensor (1860–1949), and further related<br />

works from past Dutch and Flemish artists and contemporary Belgian artists<br />

including Brueghel and Rubens.<br />

Enjoy Spring in <strong>Nagoya</strong><br />

<strong>Nagoya</strong> Castle Spring Festival 2012 <br />

The grounds of <strong>Nagoya</strong> Castle will be open daily for its annual spring<br />

festival from March 28 to Sunday, May 6 (09:00 - 16:30). During cherry<br />

blossom season from March 28 to April 11 the castle grounds will be lit up<br />

during the evenings. During this period the castle grounds will be open until<br />

20:00 (last entry to the castle 19:00) and the castle will be open until 19:30<br />

(last entry 19:00). Street entertainers will be performing shows throughout<br />

the festival period.<br />

Special Golden Week events include an Inuyama cormorant fishing (ukai)<br />

demonstration (May 3 from 11:00 & 13:30), a 16 th century flint-lock gun<br />

display, (May 4 from 11:00 & 13:30) and a children's armour try-on booth<br />

(May 5 from 09:30 & 13:30) - limited to the first 20 children (height restriction:<br />

120 - 140cm).<br />

Admission to the castle grounds is 500 Yen for adults and free for elementary<br />

school children and younger.<br />

British Masters of Watercolour Exhibition <br />

<br />

A total of 160 works on-loan from the world-class watercolour collection<br />

of the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester in the UK.<br />

Featured artists range from Joseph Turner (1775 - 1851) - the great<br />

master of British watercolour landscape painting - to Pre-Raphaelite<br />

works by Millais and Rossetti.<br />

Yosakoi Yume Matsuri 2012 <br />

Around 100 teams, young and old, from all over Japan will converge on <strong>Nagoya</strong><br />

to perform in this two-day colourful and vibrant festival of traditional Kochi-style<br />

Japanese street dancing. Admission is free to all stage areas except Shirotori<br />

Gardens where admission to the Gardens is 300 Yen for adults.<br />

Belgian Beer Weekend 2012 <br />

The Belgian Beer Weekend debuted in Tokyo in 2010, and this year it will be visiting <strong>Nagoya</strong> for the first time. Hisaya Odori Park will stage the best of<br />

Belgium: a wide selection of great beers, delicious food like fries, meat balls, grilled sausages and waffles, and top Belgian live music. Admission is free.<br />

Art as Magic - Visual Deceptions and the Inner Spiritual World<br />

<br />

This exhibition will bring together art from the Mie Prefectural Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts<br />

- Gifu, and the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art under the theme word of “magic”.<br />

On show is art from different origins and eras - from an ancient world Mesopotamian cylinder seal to<br />

Modern Art.<br />

Hokusai Exhibition <br />

This special exhibition to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the<br />

birth of Ukiyoe master Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) features a total<br />

of 200 prints – many of which are on loan from the Katsushika Hokusai<br />

Museum in Shimane Prefecture. Featured works include Hokusai’s<br />

famous Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the<br />

internationally recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa.<br />

Hokusai is one of the best well-known woodblock artists with both<br />

Vincent van Gogh & Pablo Picasso being influenced by the artist’s work.<br />

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test<br />

The 2012 Summer JLPT is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 1. There are 5 levels available - N1, N2, N3, N4, and N5; N1 is the<br />

most difficult. The application period for the summer test started on Monday, April 2 & ends on Wednesday, May 2.<br />

<br />

Apply by post: Application booklets are available major bookstores in Japan such as Maruzen () in Sakae, and Sanseido () on<br />

the 11 th Floor of the JR Central Towers. The application guide costs 500 Yen, and the actual test application costs 5,500 Yen.<br />

Apply online: From this year, you can now apply online (after registering you details) via the JEES website http://info.jees-jlpt.jp. The<br />

test application costs 5,500 Yen.<br />

The JLPT official website (www.jlpt.jp/e/) has an online guide as well as sample questions, listening scripts, and answers to sample<br />

questions are available in a printer-friendly PDF format. Audio samples of listening questions are also available in a downloadable<br />

iPod-friendly MP3 format.<br />

Increase in Subsidized Pregnancy Health Checks <br />

From April 2012, the City of <strong>Nagoya</strong> will be subsiding 2 additional ultrasonography (ultrasound) examinations for pregnant women<br />

to bring the total number of subsided ultrasound to 4.<br />

Women currently pregnant who had until March 2012 to receive their subsided ultrasounds, will be able to receive the 2 additional<br />

ones from April. <br />
