BDRA was involved in the setting up of the
Billericay Twinning Association, and the creation
of the Billericay Design Statement Association,
and will always help any of its members with any
problems with the “powers-that-be”. The BDRA
produces a monthly newsletter, “The Resident”,
which is delivered to over 6,000 households in
Billericay. In addition to working for the good of
Billericay, the Association runs a range of coach
trips to a wide variety of attractions. These are
always priced attractively for members to benefit
from group discounts. Membership of the BDRA
is open to residents of Billericay, Great Burstead,
Little Burstead & South Green for the princely
sum of £2 per year. More information is available
Billericay Horticultural Society
This Society was formed back in 1899 for
the purpose of uniting people with the
common interest in Horticulture. We are
governed by an elected committee of keen and
talented amateur enthusiasts in accordance to
the rules of the Royal Horticultural Society.
The Society is affiliated to the R.H.S. the
National Dahlia Society and the National
Chrysanthemum Society. We currently have a
membership of 100 together with 14 Life
Members. We hold monthly meetings in the Day
Centre, Billericay, usually on the 3rd Monday of
the month at 8 p.m. These meetings include a
guest speaker covering a variety of subjects of a
horticultural nature, although not exclusively so.
Our programme is varied and includes topics
such as, South African plants, planting the right
plant for the right place, growing vegetables,
bamboos, ferns and cannas. In June we leave the
Day Centre for a private evening visit to a local
beauty spot and in December we conclude our
year with a Christmas Party.
Regular coach outings are held normally at
weekends. As members of the R.H.S. we are
bound to hold an Annual Flower Show usually
during September. We actively encourage our
members to participate in showing their plants
and produce which are assessed by qualified
R.H.S. judges.
We are a self financed society by way of raffles
and 2 plant sales held in the Reading Rooms in
Billericay High Street. Annual membership
currently costs £5 for an individual person and
£8 per couple together with a 50p entry cost.
Guests are charged £1.50.
The Lions Club of Billericay
In 2009 the Lions Club of Billericay proudly
celebrates its 30th birthday. Over the years it
has become something of an institution in
the town with its familiar bookstall outside
Somerfields every Saturday and of course the
Father Christmas Sleigh collection.
Currently the Club comprises 25 members aged
from 30 upwards and meets every second and
fourth Monday at 8:00 pm at the Burstead Golf
Club.
Through the many fund raising activities over
the last 30 years such as the Christmas Sleigh,
Easter Hamper raffles, quizzes, indoor and
outdoor music concerts and raffles at local beer
festivals the Club has raised over £300,000 for
mainly local good causes such as St Luke's
Hospice, Little Havens, Hamlyn House and
many individuals in need.
Being part of Lions International which
comprises 44,000 clubs with 1,300,000 members
in 200 countries around the world some of the
money collected is used to assist in trying to
eradicate causes of blindness and assisting
following natural disasters such as floods and
earthquakes.
As well as fund raising activities the Club is also
very involved in the community with specific
efforts aimed at assisting the elderly and the
youth of the area. In respect of the latter the
Club is currently sponsoring a Young Leaders in
the Community project, a peace poster
competition in schools and a drug awareness
helpline.
