Rotary Club of Billericay
Rotary was formed in Chicago in 1905 by
Paul Harris and his friends. It is active in
nearly 200 countries and geographical
regions, and has 1.2 million members in over
33,000 clubs. In the U.K. and Ireland there are
1,840 clubs with more than 55,000 members.
Rotary is a totally voluntary organisation.
Rotarians are actively involved in educational
and humanitarian programmes using their
professional and business skills. Programmes
involvement are in the main areas of Water,
Literacy, Health & Hunger, and Polio
Eradication. Rotary, working with the WHO,
has immunised over 2 billion children against
polio. It is the largest public health campaign
the world has ever seen.
The Rotary Club of Billericay was established in
1959 and celebrates its 50th anniversary in the
autumn. It is entirely appropriate that our
President in the 50th anniversary year is Ben
Clarke, a founder member of the Club. Each
Rotary Club strives for a membership that is an
up-to-date and progressive representation of its
community’s business, vocational and
professional interests. Membership offers a
number of benefits including:
• Effecting change within the community
• Developing leadership skills
• Gaining an understanding of, and having an
impact on international humanitarian issues
• Developing relations with community and
business leaders.
Currently our Club has 24 men and women of
varying ages, business and professional
backgrounds. We meet every Monday lunchtime
(except on Bank Holidays) at The Ivory Rooms,
Laindon Road, Billericay where we enjoy lunch,
fellowship and after lunch speakers.
We regularly provide shelter boxes containing
tents and essential equipment for survival in
major disaster areas. We organise exchanges for
young professional people — last year, a group of
local professionals went out to Japan and we
hosted the return visit. Locally, we stage an
annual Art Exhibition in St Mary Magdalen for
local artists and schools. We also sponsor “Youth
Speaks” and the “Young Chef” competitions.
This is just a small flavour of what we are
involved in both locally and internationally. If
you are interested in helping others, would like
to ‘give back’ to your local community and be
involved in international aid, and would like to
meet like-minded people, please call our
Secretary Ed Harrison on 01277 655081.
The Rotary Club of Billericay Mayflower
Billericay’s Fun Night, renamed Christmas
Family Fayre and the summertime Fun
Day have become annual firm favourites
for thousands of families.
It's all down to commitment behind the scenes
of members of the Rotary Club of Billericay
Mayflower created in 1990 by the existing
Rotary Club of Billericay.
Many people remain under the misapprehension
that Rotarians are just charity fund-raisers. The
truth lies in Mayflower’s role in the two big
Billericay events. They provide the umbrella for
local organisations to entertain, to raise their
own profile and their funds.
Mayflower arranges for High Street closure to
traffic, helps in ensuring trouble-free late
shopping evening and that shopkeepers get
their fair share of Christmas trade.
