SO GOODBYE TO 2011
BUT WHAT WILL 2012
HAVE IN STORE
What a year 2011 turned out to be!!
There cannot be many that will be sad to
see it gone!!
With the Scrumpy now into eight years,
this will be a very sparse January for
gigs going by the lack of, that we have
received!
Most venues will be looking back to
January 2011, then taking into account
the business they did that month and
then what they did over the year. So
with the lack of gigs, a lot of venues
have decided to cut back or not bother,
and who can blame them
The truth is there are not that many
areas of life that have not been effected
by this economic climate, in some form
or other it is effecting all of us. The good
thing is that human beings are resourceful
and adaptable, though it can
take some longer to adapt than others.
Will the economic climate be another
nail in the coffin for live music No, I am
convinced it will adapt, and change to
the climate, so support where you can
and enjoy.............
We thought that this photo of a cat
curled up as they do, a sleep in
someone’s guitar case was rather
sweet!! We at The Scrumpy have no
idea who’s case this is or cat for that
matter, it was sent in an e-mail of an
assortment of cats in boxes!!
Make of all that as you will!!
An 11 year old boy was doing his violin practice
at home and the torturous noise was making
the dog howl! Upstairs, the boy’s father
was trying to work on the computer. After
putting up with the combined racket of violin
called out: “Jason, can’t you play something
IT’S PLAN B FOR
SWANS IN FLIGHT
One of the UK’s hottest current songwriting
teams, (famed for their work
with chart sensation, Plan B, and including
Ivor Novello Award winning,
Cassell, AKA ‘The BeatMaker’), have
confirmed they will be producing the
British rock band, ‘Swans In Flight’, and
their forth coming release due out
Spring 2012. In the producers chair at
John Delf’s, ‘Edge Studios’, Cassell will
be joined by Guild Award winning fellow
Plan B member, Eric Appapoulay.
“I recently got the chance to hear the
song, “123”, taken from the Swans In
Flight’s self penned ‘acoustic’ album
and liked what I heard. I shared it with
the rest of my Sony Publishing/Plan B
songwriting team and we all agreed this
was something we really wanted to do.
I’m excited to be involved with this
band,” states Cassell who is also a
member of, “The Streets”.
Swans In Flight’s studio alliance with
Cassell and the Plan B team is set to
produce a fascinating amalgam of
styles and textures which will draw on
JANUARY 2012 6
vinyl at revolver
both the classic and the new. Swans In
Flight frontman Hugo Montgomery
Swan, revealed that both he and Cassell
share a common love for melody,
“Above all, everyone loves a good tune
and it doesn’t matter whether, you’re
talking Metal or Rap - everyone’s ears
are tuned to the ‘hook’. Therefore, Cassell
and I and all the guys involved in
this project, will be going for the song
everytime......”
Swans in Flight are currently being
booked to perform main stage festival
performances for 2012 plus a select
number of theatre shows next March
that will feature Metal Funk bassist, T M
Stevens, (Joe Cocker, James Brown,
Steve Vai), in the band’s line-up.
STEVE DARRINGTON
STEVE DARRINGTON and THE
SWANAGE BLUES FESTIVALS
Thank God for real life characters! And
people that have passion and care........
Steve Darrington arrived in Swanage for
a 2 day stay - and never left!! For those
that have never been, Swanage is a
delightful seaside town in Dorset on the
south coast of England, not far from
Poole and Bournemouth, with a picturesque
bay, an award winning beach,
with a nice climate when the weathers
fine! Steve started the Swanage Blues
in 2001 originally as a birthday party
and it has since developed over the
years into the biggest blues party on the
south coast! Lucky for music lovers
living in the area, the music events for a
small resort are many. Now Steve
organise’s two blues festivals which
take place in March and October. There
are 60 gigs of acoustic and electric
JANUARY 2012 8
blues based music in 20 indoor venues,
admission is FREE to customers of the
various pubs, restaurants and hotel
bars that host the live music. People
attending the events will be asked to
contribute (donate generously) towards
the festival by the collection team of
volunteers, known as The Bucketeers!
Considering this is a FREE festival with
over 60 gigs, but no major sponsor and
organised by one man in a wheelchair -
that’s incredible, but to make it happen
in the worst recession the country has
ever seen is fantastic. For more information
DID YOU KNOW THAT - ‘The Great Gig In The Sky’ - Pink Floyd
This Empire Theatre recording from 16th November 1974 is hilarious because you can hear
the bootlegger chatting to the guy next to him during the breaks between songs, then, when
Floyd start a new number, getting rather cross saying, “No talking, I’m taping right now!”
WHO NEEDS A BIG NAME
RECORD COMPANY
That’s one good plus for modern technology,
provided you have the money,
you can produce your own albums,
rather than wait to be discovered!!
CRUSH UK
Martin Weller, Richard Bell and David
Cameron Dudley have after 12 years
decided to call it a day. They have over
the years produced a healthy selection
of own albums, about 13 in all, the last
release in the summer of 2011 ‘Proper
Job’. Based in Devon, they have not
only a good album track record, but
played thousands of gigs and entertained
thousands of music fans all over
the UK and even the USA regularly.
Christchurch area, playing their own
original music. They have been playing
together since November 2009, winning
a Battle of the Bands in January 2010.
Since then they have gone on to attract
a lot of interest from all over the UK with
the release back in December of an EP
which comes with some really good
written and produced music. Predicted
SKIMMITY HITCHERS
These guys loaded up their skimmiy
wagon in the spring of 2010 and took to
the road, singing their songs, with a
smile on their faces and a wink in their
eye. Their album ‘Game Set and Natch’
is causing chaos on the roads of the
West Country, as drivers crack up, leaving
the road in all directions. The album
not to be played whilst driving!!
