Salt Spring Island Council of the 

Catholic Women's League met in 

the Parish Hall last Wednesday. Fr. 

P. A. Bergin led the opening prayers 

and Ursula McEwen presided. 

Elsa Drummond, spiritual 

convener, reported that a meeting 

was held January 26 with 

representatives of the Anglican 

Church, the Community Gospel 

Hall and the United Church to 

complete arrangements for the 

World Day of Prayer to be held in 

the Catholic Church on Drake 

Road on March 4 at 1:30 pm. 

The speaker will be Rev. Murdo 

Nicholson. Alter the service 

refreshments will be served in the 

church hall. 

Ursula McEwen reported on the 

visit to the parish of representatives 

of Marriage Encounter. Anyone 

wishing to go to Marriage 

Encounter in Victoria may obtain 

an application from Fr. P.A. 

Bergin. 

The members concluded their 

study of proposed changes to the 

constitution of the C.W.L. Their 

recommendations will be presented 

to the constitution committee at the 

regional meeting to be held March 7 

at Port Alberni. 

The meeting closed with prayer 

and Val Gyves and Pat Beitel 

provided refreshments for a social 

hour.

AN INVESTMENT IN YOUTH 

This summer, thousands of jobs will be created for students. The federal government's 

SUMMER CANADA program will provide funding to non-profit organizations and 

municipalities to help them employ students, and give them career-related experience. 

• Students who can't find summer jobs don't develop the kind of work experience that 

helps them bridge the gap between school and work. It might even mean a student's 

education comes to a sudden stop. SUMMER CANADA is designed to change that — by 

helping employers help students. • If you are a student interested in real work 

experience, you should register at your local Canada Employment Centre. If you are a 

member of a non-profit organization that would like funding to hire students, read on. 

COMMUNITY PROJECTS 

SUMMER CANADA applicants who want 

funding to hire students to work on communitybased 

projects must be able to employ three 

local students. Work should result in tangible 

goods or services to the community and provide 

marketable job experience for the student workers. 

Community projects must last between six 

and eighteen consecutive weeks during the 

summer.

gives the employer increasingly skilled workers, 

and the students secure summer employment 

that builds valuable work experience.

Spot bowling is the only way to go 

and living proof is Ed Harker, who 

sports a 150 average in the men's 

league. Two weeks ago Terry got 

him to try spot bowling instead of 

his usual pin bowling. Last week it 

paid off as he came up with a 618 

triple, 168 pins over his average. 

Felt sorry for my daughter Julie 

last Friday night. She had six 

headpins in one game as she came 

up with a 137 game. 

It never fails. As soon as anyone 

asks me to watch him bowl, because 

he is not doing too good of late, he 

always gets a strike. How can you 

fault anyone who does that

Perseverance pays off for 

Salt Spring Sockeyes

Perseverance pays off in the long 

run. The Salt Spring Sockeyes have 

had a dismal season in league play 

and after last weekend's opening 

defeat in Cup play the prospects 

looked bleak indeed. 

But not for this group of neversay-die 

women, who put on a 

sparkling display of soccer to defeat 

the Stingers 2-1. Even so, the 

outcome was never a certainty, 

especially in the second half when 

the Stingers poured on the pressure. 

The Sockeyes started with only 

nine players and appeared to be in 

for a tough match even though the 

Stingers had only 10 players. 

Minutes after the opening whistle 

Trish Graham arrived, giving the 

Sockeyes their 10th player and the 

team sprang to life. 

Deneen Grant pushed a quick 

pass to Trish who split the Stingers' 

defence and banged home their first 

goal. 

Moments later, Vicki Byron 

arrived and the team had their full 

complement of players and they 

responded by pouring on the 

pressure in the Stingers' end. 

Trish, Vicki and Debby Bell all 

had glorious chances to score but 

the Stingers held on valiantly. The 

Sockeyes' pressure eventually paid 

off as Jackie Byron dribbled 

through three defenders and put 

Debbie Bell in the clear with a 

perfect pass. 

Debbie made no mistake and the 

Sockeyes were up by two at the half. 

The Stingers' missing players 

finally arrived at the half giving 

them a full squad. With their fresh 

legs they poured on the pressure in 

the second half. The Sockeyes' back 

wall of Suzanne Terrick, Sue Byron 

and Marianne Allan, coupled with 

goalie Denise de la Franiere, were 

equal to the challenge. 

Mid-way through the half the 

Stingers slipped through the 

Sockeyes' defence for a goal but it 

was the only goal Denise was to let 

in, as she played brilliantly 

throughout the match. 

The Stingers pushed forward for 

the equalizer but the Sockeyes' midfield 

of Becky Legg, Deneen Grant 

and Maria Betts took control and 

contained the opposition in their 

own half for most of the remainder 

of the game. 

Next week they hope to make it 

two in a row with a home game on 

Sunday at 11:30 am.

On Sunday the Salt Spring 

Strikers lost an important match to 

Prospect Lake in their quest for the 

"B" District Cup. 

Although the Cup is not out of 

their reach yet, the road to the 

playoffs is now quite a bit more 

difficult as they will have to win 

three games in a row, away from 

home, to participate in the final 

match. 

The Strikers were short some 

players but the team was determined 

to fill in the voids and pull off a 

victory against their strong"B"side. 

Besides the desire for the District 

Cup, the boys had another reason 

for wanting this victory. Last year 

the same Prospect Lake team had 

knocked the Strikers out of District 

Cup play and down to the "C" level 

of competition. 

The Strikers started strongly, 

putting immediate pressure on the 

Prospect Lake defence but time 

after time they either outran the 

Striker forwards or muscled them 

off the ball. 

Finally, after 15 minutes of 

determined effort, the Strikers were 

able to break through the defensive 

wall, and put the ball in the back of

the net. As with many of the team's 

goals, it was a combined effort 

between Mike Cue and Jeff Moger. 

Prospect Lake rallied after the 

scoring of this goal and scored one 

of their own, a well earned goal that 

seemed to boost their spirits and 

spur them on to greater effort. Ten 

minutes later they scored again, this 

time on a breakaway. 

Now the Strikers renewed their 

effort, and with only minutes to go 

in the first half, almost tied it up as 

Lric Donnelly executed a perfect 

left-footed kick that beat the keeper, 

but missed the net by inches. 

The second half was back and 

forth action, as both teams were 

able to move the ball through the 

mid-field of the other, but seemed 

unable to penetrate each other's 

defence. 

Finally, with five minutes to go, 

the Strikers literally pulled their 

goalie and pushed everyone up in an 

effort to even the score and put the 

game into overtime. With only the 

keeper and one defender back, the 

Striker net was virtually 

unprotected. 

With only minutes to go. 

Prospect Lake .broke out of their 

own end and put the lid on the game 

with their third goal.

KICK-OFF 

Coers Cup play is delayed 

by poor weekend weather 


Soccer news came on two fronts 

last week amid a weekend of terrible 

weather that limited action at 

Portlock Park. 

Our off-field news is that the 

Royal Canadian Legion Branch at 

Salt Spring becomes a supporter of 

our club once again. 

Over past seasons the service 

clubs of Salt Spring Island have 

been a mainstay of support for the 

many programs our club offers.

Once again the Salt Spring 

Selects put on a thrilling cup game 

as they out-lasted Duncan 1-0 to 

advance to the semi-finals ol the 

District Cup. 

The two teams battled through 60 

minutes of scoreless regulation 

time, forcing a 20-minute overtime 

session. Duncan, with the wind at 

then back, pressed hard in the first 

half of the overtime but the Selects' 

defence held tight. 

Mid-way through the second hall 

of overtime the Selects struck for the 

big goal. It started from a cornerkick 

with Rob Wanless passing the 

ball to Ben Berry. Ben dropped the 

ball to Chad Little who first-timed a 

cross into the middle. 

The cross was deflected into the 

air but carried to Darccy 

Kirkpatrick who smartly volleyed a 

high shot in for the winner. 

Duncan pressed hard for the 

equalizer in the dying minutes but 

Salt Spring was the match for every 

Duncan thrust. 

No damage 

Volunteer firefighters were called 

out last Thursday to deal with a 

chimney fire in a home on Lower 

Ganges Road on Salt Spring Island. 

The fire caused no damage to the 

home of Betty Calkins. The call was 

made at 5:45 pm.

Their support enabled us to put on 

the Whitecaps clinic, referees'clinic 

and coaches' clinics as well as run 

our on-the-lield program. 

During the last couple ol seasons 

their support has dried up as they 

turned their financial assistance 

towards other goals. The return of 

the Legion to our family comes 

when we need it most. 

With spiraling costs and a 

booming enrolment of 250 players, 

finding the necessary funding 

becomes more difficult each soccer 

season. 

On the soccer field there was only 

limited play in Cup action but all 

our teams are still involved, at least 

for another weekend. The poor 

weather cancelled Coers Cup play 

for the intra-island and peewee 

soccer also, but both will resume 

next weekend. 

In Division 6C cup play the 

Selects won again with an exciting 

1-0 win over Duncan in overtime. 

This weekend they play their semifinal 

match at 11:30 at Portlock 

Park. 

The Sting in 5C cup play won 

easily as their opponents failed to 

field a team. Their next match is 

Saturday at 1 pm at home. 

1 he Sockeyes, in women's play, 

defeated the Stingers 2-1 and also 

play at home at 11:30 am Sunday at 

Portlock. 

The Strikers in 3B cup play 

dropped a tough 3-1 decision to 

Prospect Lake and play in Victoria 

this weekend. 

The Wranglers play their semifinal 

match in Saanich this 

weekend. With a win they move into 

the 4C cup final. 

The Kicks play their first games 

this weekend in the IA cup. 

Saturday at 10 am at Portlock 

against Bays United is the first with 

their second at 10 am Sunday. 

For 3,000,000 Canadians 

Heart Disease isn't just 

somebody else's problem. 

Make no mistake about it. Heart and Blood Vessel diseases 

are Canada's number one health problem, killing almost as 

many Canadians every year as all other causes put together. 

At any one time, almost 3,000,000 people will be affected 

by diseases the Canadian Heart Foundation is concerned 

about. They include: Hypertension (high blood pressure). Heart 

Attack and Stroke, Rheumatic Heart Disease, Congenital 

Heart Disease plus a number of others that are less well

At present it is estimated Heart and Blood Vessel diseases 

are costing the Canadian economy over two billion dollars a 

year in medical expenses, lost wages and lost production. That 

makes it a problem that affects us'all. 

Look at all we've done. 

We can all be proud of the progress the Canadian Heart 

Fund has made over the last 25 years. Today the death rate 

is down dramatically. Over 27°/o compared to 1965. Literally 

thousands of Canadians are alive today because of your 

donations in the past. 

The reason for this reduction is based almost solely on 

research and education. Canadian researchers developed the 

first pacemaker, artery transplants, human heart valve replacement, 

surgical correction for "blue babies" and techniques 

used around the world when major heart surgery is necessary. 

Our education programme helps spread information about 

new breakthroughs to doctors, nurses and other health care 

professionals through seminars held in hospitals across 

Canada. Training for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation 

(Emergency Heart Massage) is also carried on in many centres. 

Of all the donations received by the Heart Fund, 88% goes 

directly into research and education. So youe money makes a 

difference where it really counts.

Because research into a number of heart diseases has been 

so successful, future work is being concentrated on the two 

main killers left to be conquered: Arteriosclerosis and 

Hypertension.

Last year 80,000 Canadians died of Cardiovascular Disease. 

More people than from all other diseases combined. So even 

with the progress made to date, Heart diseases can still

median age of stroke victims is only 50. Right in what many 

people consider the prime of life.

The glass door had been broken 

accidentally, said the defendant, 

and thejudge accepted his version of 

the incident. 

Melvin Bannock, of Salt Spring, 

told thejudge last week that he had 

gone to the Gulf Island Trading 

Company store,on September 23 at 

about 6:20 pm to buy a lighter. The 

store was closed but customers 

could be seen within, said Bannock. 

He and a clerk at the store became 

involved in an argument and 

Bannock had been pushed into the 

street. When he again attempted to 

enter the store, the window was 

broken, he said. 

Bannock told Judge D.S. Collins 

that he had gone almost 

immediately to the home of the store 

owner to offer to pay for the 

window. The replacement value was 

$57. 

He had been drinking for several 

hours previous to the incident, said 

Bannock. The crown attorney said 

that people had come forward to 

note that such behaviour was not 

ordinary conduct for Bannock. 

ACCEPTED 

He had entered a guilty plea to the 

charge of causing a disturbance and 

asked the judge for a definition of 

wilful damage. Thejudge noted that 

it involved intentional damage. 

When Bannock gave his evidence 

that the glass broke accidentally, the 

judge accepted it. 

In handing out a fine of $25, the 

judge noted that the incident might 

not have occurred if Bannock had 

not been drinking. Bannock's 

actions in contacting the store 

owner to pay for the damage also 

influenced his decision, said the 

judge.

Discussion centres on two issues at Trust meeting

The quarterly public meeting of 

the Galiano Island Trust Committee 

held in the Community Hall Friday 

evening drew a large audience, and 

two main issues emerged. 

The first arose from applications 

which sought to change the density 

provisions on certain parcels to 

allow construction of an extra 

family dwelling over and above that 

allowed by the zoning bylaw. 

The general trustees were 

adamant that such ad hoc decisions 

are a danger to the integrity of the 

community plan and the bylaws, 

and unfair to others who own 

property in the respective zones. 

One parcel in question is in V2 

zone and was formerly, under 

Capital Regional District bylaw 

103, in the Rural Residential zone. 

Both bylaws state that "On one 

parcel of land there is allowed one 

one-family dwelling". The members 

of the Advisory Planning 

Commission and the trustees all 

agreed that their duty was to uphold 

the bylaw, so the application was 

rejected. 

COULD BE CHANGED 

It was pointed out that if the 

public has changed its position since 

the community plan received 

widespread support 10 years ago, 

and is willing to permit multiple 

dwellings per parcel in any zone, 

then the plan and the bylaws can be 

changed. 

The original plan envisioned 

review every few years but set out no 

mechanism whereby this could be 

done. The initiative for change or 

review could come from the 

Advisory Planning Commission or 

a revival of a Galiano planning 

committee but would involve a great 

deal of work and many public 

meetings. 

The most absorbing issue was 

that of a commercial centre which 

arose from consideration of the 

designation, by the ministry of 

transportation and highways, of 

Sturdies Bay Road from the wharf 

to Burrill Road as a controlled 

access highway, and two 

applications for commercial zoning. 

The effect of the highway 

designation is to stifle any further 

development in the Sturdies Bay 

area, especially as the regional 

approving officer has so far failed to 

respond to a request for guidelines 

or policy. 

Unless this situation can be 

resolved the commercial centre of 

the island might shift to the area 

around the intersection of Sturdies 

Bay Road and Porlier Pass Drive,

TWO APPLICATIONS 

That this process may have 

already begun was evidenced by two 

applications for commercial zoning 

in the area. One was for a farm and 

garden centre to sell animal feed, 

produce, health food and related 

merchandise. The other was for a 

neighbourhood pub with cafe. 

Both applications had received 

the approval of the Galiano 

Advisory Planning Commission 

and, despite considerable 

reservation regarding traffic safety, 

received popular but not unanimous 

support. In both cases bylaws had 

been prepared and received first 

reading, and the applications will 

proceed to public hearing. 

Sparky New received assurance 

that plans and details of each 

proposal would be made available 

lor public scrutiny, that both 

projects would be subject to 

development permit, and that the 

conditions negotiated should reflect 

public input at the hearings. 

Edrie Holloway thought that 

there should be more study of the 

need for commercial development 

and Dr. Kingscote voiced concern 

about the possibility of groundwater 

pollution in the area. 

CORONER'S REPORT 

The coroners report on the death of 

Pauline Rimmer in a bicycle 

accident last summer was received 

and his recommendations 

discussed. Pressure will be exerted 

on B.C. Ferries to have Mr. Ross' 

suggestion regarding off-loading of 

cyclists after cars, implemented. 

More highway warning signs 

were advocated whether erected by 

the department or the local 

community. Although all users 

enjoy equal rights to use the island 

roads they are not all equally 

vulnerable and vehicle drivers have 

a special responsibility for road 

safety. The department of highways 

was criticised by several speakers for 

the low priority it appears to give to 

road safety. 

The Islands Trust regional plan 

and its possible effect on the 

Galiano plan and bylaws was the 

subject of a report from Tony 

Roberts, the Trust's chief executive 

officer. 

He concluded that since the 

regional plan dealt in generalities 

and was designed to give a clear 

statement of the Trust's wishes when 

dealing with government ministries, 

it would have little or no effect on 

the community 

plan or bylaws. 

There is no intent to have regulatory 

bylaws enforce the regional plan, 

and the only way it might supercede

any part of the local plan would be if 

protective zoning for the purpose of 

preserving an ecologically sensitive 

area, such as the top of Galiano 

Mountain, was required. 

This report is being made 

available to the Chamber of 

Commerce, which will consider the 

plan on February 19. 

After more than four hours the 

standing-room-only audience had 

dwindled to a corporal's guard as 

discussion took to the water. 

Ann Eriksson of Retreat Cove 

had sought advice of the Trust as to 

how she might start mariculture in 

those waters. She was encouraged to 

pursue the matter by further 

discussion with the Trust. 

Supporters of the proposal were 

anxious not to have Retreat Cove 

rezoned to Water B as this would 

allow a number of polluting 

activities. 

Finally, the chairman reported on 

the question of pollution by boats in 

areas of restricted tidal movement. 

Both federal and provincial 

governments are concerned, and the 

latter is considering 

introducing 

regulations applying to private 

pleasure craft, compelling any 

equipped with a head to install a 

holding tank which could only be 

discharged at an appropriate shore 

installation or in open water. 

The Islands Trust has been asked 

to identify anchorages where the 

discharge of marine sewage is a 

problem.

The annual general meeting of the 

Senior Citizens Association was 

held February 7 in Page Drive 

Lounge. In the absence of both the 

president and vice-president, 

business was conducted by the 

treasurer, Frank Greenhalgh, who 

also had to present the financial

Members were informed that the 

association had a bank balance in 

excess of $4,000. Several proposals 

were made to reduce this, but the 

only one framed as a motion and 

duly passed was to make a donation 

to the Activity Centre Society, as

In light of the rather inconclusive 

nature of the meeting the executive 

is calling a special general meeting

grant from the B.C. Seniors Lottery 

Fund.

The annual general meeting of the 

Galiano Chamber of Commerce will 

take place in the South Galiano 

Community Hall on Saturday at 8 

pm. There are a number of 

important items on the agenda. 

On Sunday at 2 pm in Page Drive 

Lounge the Galiano Island Housing 

Society will hold its annual meeting. 

This society is responsible for the 

administration of the Senior 

Citizens Housing Complex at Page 

Drive. Membership is open to the 

public who are invited to attend the 

meeting. 

Frank Graham 

News has been received of the 

death in Victoria of Frank Graham. 

The fact that Mr. Graham fought in 

the Boer War gives an indication of 

his longevity. His connection with 

Galiano was a long one. 

Originally from England, Frank 

sailed with the East India Company 

to China, where he is reported to 

have made the acquaintance of Sun 

Yat Sen before that gentleman came 

to prominence with the overthrow 

of the Manchu dynasty and the 

formation of the republic. 

From there he made his way to 

Canada, and after selling real estate 

in Victoria he moved to Retreat 

Cove, where he bought a large 

parcel of very attractive farm and 

forest land. 

Frank and his wile lived simply in 

a small house on his property for 

over 30 years. He was a skilful 

gardener, noted particularly for his 

spring bulbs. Another hobby at 

which he excelled was carving, and 

his masterpiece was an intricate 

ikon-like work of art made from 

holly wood, which took him almost 

20 years to complete. He was well 

known to the boating fraternity as 

wharfinger of the government dock 

at Retreat Cove. 

He was a character about whom 

numerous tales are told. Many of 

these have been preserved on tape 

by Dr. Hart Scarrow, a long-time 

neighbour of Frank's. 

Mr. Graham was one of those 

individuals who, after very long and 

interesting lives, deserve a 

biography rather than an obituary.

Andrews were honoured at a shower 

February 7. Many fine gifts were 

bestowed upon them. 

Taime Hindmarch has gone to 

Ottawa to visit Mary, her youngest 

daughter. Mary is recovering from a 

serious illness. Taime is off to give 

her care and warmth for a week. 

The Parks Branch is proceeding 

with the plan to build three quarters 

of a mile of trail, picnic tables, 

outhouses and a water facility at 

Winter Cove. Three foremen have 

come from the Nanaimo area to 

supervise the work. 

Over 20 islanders applied for the 

seven jobs that were offered. The 

men will work 10 days on and four 

off. This allows the foremen time to 

visit with their families. They are 

staying in the Department of 

Highways yard in recreational 

vehicles. 

The school children have had 

their photographs taken.

Trustees of the Gulf Island 

School Board would shun fourletter 

words. As one trustee noted, 

"Snow is a four-letter word and I 

want nothing to do with it." 

Ten years ago 

The Salt Spring resident wanted 

to build on his three acres. He was 

told that no permit could be issued 

because the land was for farming. 

But the land had not been farmed 

for many years and was not 

registered as farmland, so the man 

could not farm it. When he 

attempted to find out the exact 

status of his land he failed. The 

provincial government had decreed, 

through cabinet order, that 

farmland in the province must be 

farmland, but the federal land 

inventory designated the category 

for land. The owner wondered what 

was going on. 

The planning association 

protested the proposed bridge 

between Gabriola and Vancouver 

Islands. The Salt Spring group sent 

a letter to the minister of municipal 

affairs outlining their objections to 

the bridge and the proposed ferry 

terminal, which would serve 

mainland traffic to the islands. 

The Independent Crown Colony 

of Salt Spring Island was split in 

two. The factions, Unionists who 

wanted to rejoin British Columbia 

and Separatists who wanted to join 

nothing, were arguing hot and 

heavy about the status of the island 

colony. The prime minister could 

not be reached for comment and the 

foreign diplomats commented, "No 

comment." A vote to determine 

islanders' opinion resulted in a 50-50 

split. No one knew what the future 

held. 

The Galiano Island community 

plan was adopted at a meeting of 

island residents. The plan was a 

compromise between two plans 

previously presented by two groups. 

The accepted plan visualized a 

population of 3,000. Different 

categories of land use, such as rural 

residential, wilderness and 

wilderness forests were approved by 

the meeting. 

The water supply on Salt Spring 

would be increased with the hookup 

of St. Mary Lake to the North 

Salt Spring Waterworks District. 

The lake water would be available to 

residents on the system by the end of 

March. 

The Ganges detachment of 

RCMP told Driftwood that a dog 

chasing a deer could be shot but a 

deer chasing a dog couldn't suffer 

the same fate. 

Five years ago 

The operating budget for the Gulf 

Islands School District had been set 

at a record high $2,615,530. The 

previous year, the trustees had spent 

$2,172,015. The budget included 

$1.5 million for the instructional 

portion of running the district as 

well as almost $380,000 for debt 

services to pay for improvements 

and renovations already made. 

The proposed school at 

Fernwood on Salt Spring was put 

on hold as a result of a tie vote for 

acceptance of a contractor's bid oi 

$552,676 to build the structure. A tie 

vote automatically defeats a 

motion. A trustee, later in the 

meeting of the board, presented a 

notice of motion for consideration 

at the following meeting that a 

tender lor construction be accepted 

by the board. 

The wharf at Miners Bay on 

Mayne Island-was-heing rebuilt a Lacost 

of $87,000. Although most of 

the existing pilings could be utilized. 

new pilings had to be driven and the 

deck had to be replanked. 

Readers of Driftwood were asked 

to forgive and forget the printing of 

the number $149,400. What readers 

should have read was the figure 

$1,049,400 as the cost of 

construction of the intermediate 

care facility which was to be built 

near Lady Minto Hospital. 

The gong was kept busy sounding 

the end to four acts in the Gong 

Show held in the Activity Centre. 

The show had been staged to raise 

money for renovations to Central 

Hall. The scores for the 15 acts 

which appeared ranged from a 

perfect 30 to a ring of the bell. The 

event added at least $500 to the 

renovation fund. 

Land, to be used for the Fall Fair 

and as a location for a museum, was 

the goal of the Salt Spring Island 

Farmers' Institute. The group was in 

the process of seeking a suitable plot 

of land for the regular projects of the 

association. 

The Central Hall renovation fund 

stood at close to $5,000 as a result of 

donations, a rummage sale and the 

Gong Show. The restoration 

committee had estimated the cost of 

improvements to the historic 

building on Salt Spring to be 

$10,000.

A fighting sailor, Lieut.-Cmdr. 

Sturdy was sailing in corvettes in the 

Atlantic when, in 1943, he was 

transferred to serve a stint in 

Hollywood as technical adviser to 

the studio producing the movie. 

Sturdy was not only technical 

adviser, but was responsible for 

much of the script. The movie 

follows the activities of a Canadian 

ship in the Atlantic. It featured 

Randolph Scott and Ella Raines. 

Maxwell Lake in jeopardy, says society 

help in expediting the land exchange 

proposal. 

WROTE TO WATERLAND 

There the matter stood until 

January 1982 when a letter from the 

North Salt Spring Waterworks 

District trustees was sent to Tom 

Waterland, minister of forests, 

asking for his help in preserving 

Maxwell Lake and reminding him 

that he had received a copy of the 

letter sent to Chabot six months 

earlier. It also asked for a meeting 

with Waterland. 

Waterland replied that upon 

receipt of the copy of the letter to 

Chabot he had indicated to Chabot 

that "this was not an issue that 1 

would recommend be resolved by a 

land exchange." His letter also 

stated that he had instigated an 

investigation to determine what 

control, if any, his department could 

exercise over any logging operations 

on the Texada holdings. 

He stated he would get in touch 

again when he had received the 

report. That was a year ago and no 

further word has been received from 

him. 

Shortly after the letter from 

Waterland a letter was received 

from Chabot, reversing his original 

opinion on favouring the land 

exchange and conforming with 

Waterland's response. Nothing 

further has been heard from the 

government in the past year. 

DEAD ISSUE 

Rainsford feels the land exchange 

proposition is now a dead issue and ' 

stated recently that his company 

favours the idea of scientific, 

controlled logging of the property. 

He said this is common practice on a 

number of other watershed areas in 

the province and has proved to be 

quite satisfactory. 

He said that such an operation at 

Maxwell Lake would involve 

selective logging with reforestation 

and would guarantee no 

deterioration, of the watershed or 

the lake. 

In the meantime, the company, in 

an effort to obtain some revenue 

from the property, is proceeding 

with the construction of the two 

modular rental homes. 

in addition to the Texada 

property, which borders on the 

southeast side of the lake, there are 

five other holdings in the watershed. 

The land to the southwest is owned 

by Fairfield Holdings, with the 

owners living in the United States. 

There is a seasonal summer cottage 

on this property. 

FIRST OPTION 

The owners of the property have 

agreed to enter into a legal 

agreement with the NSSWD which 

would give it the first option to buy 

the property when the land comes 

up for sale at the passing of the 

present owners. 

Art 

To the west but not bordering on 

the lake is a 45-acre parcel owned by 

MacMillan Bloedel. It is very 

rugged land and not easily 

accessible. The company, on being 

approached, is studying the 

proposal of donating the land to the 

water district. 

The land to the northwest is held 

by Hanuman Services and could 

eventually be developed for 

housing. However, the company has 

agreed to donate the 30 acres of its 

property which is within the 

watershed to the waterdistrict. 

The entire northern section of the 

watershed area as well as the land 

immediately west and northeast of 

the lake is owned by the water 

district, having been donated by the 

Mouat family some years ago. 

North of this is a 120-acre parcel 

owned by Gossett and his wife 

Mimi. Although the land drains 

away from the lake it is listed as 

being in the watershed. The Gossetts 

plan to enter into a legal agreement 

with the NSSWD for first option to 

purchase and also to place a 

covenant on the land in favour of 

Williams

be subdivided. 

Maxwell Lake has been the 

source of water for Ganges and 

much of the surrounding area for 

the past 70 years. It currently serves 

450-500 businesses and homes.
