4 | A leading research intensive university Pioneering interdisciplinary research Research is at the heart of everything we do. Our Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) ratings reflect this. Ninety-five percent of our staff were submitted, all our subjects were assessed as including world leading (4*) research and nearly 90 per cent of our research was rated as internationally recognised. Sixteen of our 31 subjects are ranked in their respective top 10, with 27 in their respective top 20. ▲ The University’s research income from external grants and contracts increased by 13 per cent to nearly £38 million in the last year and we benefited from a 26 per cent increase in our Quality-Related funding for research generating an additional £18 million. We have also been successful in securing external funding for postgraduate students, such as the new South West Doctoral Training Centre from the Economic and Social Research Council, one of only 21 such centres nationally. As part of our sustained commitment to developing new talent and building research capacity, we continue to invest millions of pounds annually in funding for both Masters and research postgraduates. We have recently developed a Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences strategy to complement our existing Science Strategy which when combined together create a powerful investment that will build on our RAE 2008 success and consolidate our outstanding research and teaching in beacon areas. Significant investment in science and medicine research capacity at the University has allowed us to initiate a recruitment drive for new academic posts in these and associated areas. Research at the Cornwall Campus Exeter’s research success is not confined to our campuses in the cathedral city: the Cornwall Campus provides the opportunity to study alongside outstanding researchers in an unrivalled environment. The campus is now well established and attracts leading academics, currently including six independently funded Research Fellowships from the Royal Society, NERC and the Leverhulme Trust. The campus offers specialist research facilities and expertise, including the Camborne School of Mines’ world-class analytical mineralogical suite; the Centre for Conservation and Ecology; the Energy Policy Research Group; and internationally recognised researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The campus’s stunning main buildings have been equipped to deliver the very best in learning and teaching facilities, with teaching labs, lecture theatres and seminar rooms equipped with the latest technologies. As part of the latest phase of development, we are building a £30 million Environment and Sustainability Institute and are increasing the capacity of the existing Learning Resource Centre (LRC) with a new facility called the Exchange( see page 24). This will provide a series of informal learning environments and link the LRC to a range of distinctive new spaces that reflect the needs of 21st century students. Bridging the Gap: collaboration project wins £500,000 funding Academics from across the University have won a grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to form the Exeter Science Exchange (ESE). The project, supported by IBM UK Ltd and the South West Regional Development Agency, will enable the creation of innovative collaboration networks that will break down traditional barriers between disciplines as diverse as physics and business. These collaborations will link the rapidly expanding research base in engineering and physical sciences with excellent research in life and environmental sciences and the humanities, arts and social sciences. ESE will consist of a physical and virtual space for the trading of ideas across the disciplines, with the result being intellectual profit and societal impact.
