South West Regional NRM Strategy – Ancillary Document
5.5.1.4 Community Resource Centres
Asset value: Exceptionable
Threat score: Moderate
Asset identifiable: Yes
SMART goal for actions: xx
Will proposed action make real difference: xx
Likely private intervention if required: xx
Likely public intervention if required: xx
Identified threats: Changing government policies; changes in community needs; poor management; lack
of succession planning
Comments: The ability of such centres to get messages across through their broad networks is
exceptional; usually have excellent resources; in 4-5 years it is expected that they will be even more
accountable and consistent through standardisation; centres have to become more business-like
(efficient) to remain “in business”.
5.5.1.5 Landholders affinity for, and knowledge of, the land
Asset value: Exceptionable
Threat score: Moderate
Asset identifiable: No
SMART goal for actions: xx
Will proposed action make real difference: xx
Likely private intervention if required: xx
Likely public intervention if required: xx
Identified threats: Lack of incentive to pass on the knowledge and experience (succession) and to keep it
up (economic pressures, climate change, peer pressure); the role as mentor is key to passing this
“attitude” on as society doesn’t value it in general; corporate farms; buying power of big companies;
foreign ownership
Comments: Stewardship of the land; largely learnt from parents and/or other mentors early on in life;
great value as case studies for educational and other purposes; educational and inspirational tool.
5.5.1.6 Local innovators and educators
Asset value: Exceptionable
Threat score: Low
Asset identifiable: No
SMART goal for actions: xx
Will proposed action make real difference: xx
Likely private intervention if required: xx
Likely public intervention if required: xx
Identified threats: Economic pressures; lack of time / energy; surrounding properties (peer pressure);
decline in availability of water resources as rainfall declines (climate change); government policies; shire
councils
Comments: Examples include Sheila’s Tortoiseshell Farm and Roo Gully; lifestyle choice, but also for
greater benefit; unfortunately no central collection “point” where data collected and experiences can be
collated, stored and disseminated.
5.5.1.7 Historical collections of reports, data etc.
Asset value: Exceptionable
Threat score: High
Asset identifiable: Yes, but dispersed
SMART goal for actions: xx
Will proposed action make real difference: xx
Likely private intervention if required: xx
Likely public intervention if required: xx
Identified threats: Lack of funding; ad hoc storage methods resulting in data becoming unusable
(compatibility of software versions etc.) and loss of hard copies (rats, damp); “new broom sweeping
clean”; loss of staff/people that know what is stored and where/how.
Comments: Serious issue as much information about past successes and failures (lessons learned) is
being lost.
