Lake Jasper. 4.2.2 Previously identified threats to the region’s water resources The following were identified in strategies published by the community catchment groups, as well as in Water Quality Improvement Plans as the key threats that impact on the region’s water resources (with key threats shown in bold): Erosion; Sedimentation; Eutrophication; Salinity; Pollution from point sources; Ecosystem fragmentation; Land development (residential, rural residential, intensive agriculture, broad acre farming, pastoral, aquaculture and boating facilities); Feral animals and weed infestations; Recreational and commercial fishing; Industrial discharge; Water abstraction; and Agricultural drainage (e.g. coastal plain and saline land drainage). The State of the Environment Report (SoE 2007) cites two documents as sources for identified threats at a State level (WRC 2000, 2003), which listed the following as the key threats to the state’s water resources: Salinisation and acidification of inland waters; Loss or degradation of wetlands, and of fringing, in-stream and riparian vegetation, linked to: Erosion and sedimentation of inland waters; Eutrophication linked to nutrient enrichment (diffuse sources) and point source pollution; These were linked to exotic plant and animal invasions; waterlogging, drainage and inundation; streamflow and channel changes; unsustainable use of water resources and in-stream and riparian zone use. These compare well with those identified previously. In addition, the report identified contamination of inland waters and loss of floodplain connectivity as emerging issues. 4.3 Land resources 4.3.1 Previously identified priority land assets The land resources of the South West region as defined in the NRM strategy (SWCC 2005) include the categories agricultural land, remnant vegetation on private land and productive forests, particularly those found in the following priority agricultural zones (State NRM Office 2007): Bassendean Zone Donnybrook Sunkland Zone Eastern Darling Range Zone Leeuwin Zone Perth Coastal Zone Pinjarra Zone Scott Coastal Zone South-eastern Zone of Ancient Drainage South-western Zone of Ancient Drainage Southern Zone of Rejuvenated Drainage Warren-Denmark Southland Zone Western Darling Range Zone 44
