The Weak and the Strong
Text:
Romans 14:1-23,
1. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful
disputations.
2. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak,
eateth herbs.
3. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not
him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received
him.
4. Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant To his own
master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is
able to make him stand.
5. One man esteemth one day above another: another esteemeth
every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
6. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that
regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that
eateth eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that
eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
7. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
8. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die,
we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the
Lord’s.
9. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he
might be Lord both of the dead and living .
10. But why dost thou judge thy brother Or why dost thou set at
nought thy brother For we shall all stand before the judgment seat
of Christ.
11. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to
me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12. So then, every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
13. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this
rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in
his brother’s way.
14. I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is
nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be
unclean, to him it is unclean.
15. But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou
not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ
died.
16. Let not then your good be evil spoken of:
17. for the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but
righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
18. For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God,
and approved of men.
19. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace,
and things wherewith one may edify another.
20. For meat destroy not the work of God. All things in deed are
pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
21. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor anything
whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended or is made weak.
22. Hast thou faith Have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that
condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
23. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not
of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Introduction:
I. Christians have obligations to each other even though they don’t agree
on everything, have differences of opinions.
A. Differences of opinion among Christians are not to be permitted
to disrupt harmony in the fellowship of believers.
B. Disciples are not to allow differences in non-essential matters to
divide the sacred body of Christ.
C. Soundness in the faith and Christian liberty are not
contradictory.
1. Regrettably the body of Christ has been grievously injured
by confusions in our thinking in regard to soundness in the
faith and Christian liberty.
2. The “weak brethren” in this chapter are identified as
extremely strict, narrow minded with overly sensitive
consciences.
II. Christians are to deal with one another on the basis of love knowing
Christ died for all of us!
Commentary:
Romans 14:1, Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to
doubtful disputations.
I. The weak Christian, one weak in the faith, is to be received into
fellowship.
A. However, this brother is not to be placed in a decision making
position in the church which position would allow him to bind
his weaknesses on other Christians.
B. Coffman asserts, “Christ has received all Christians, and the
least they can do is to receive each other. He (the weak
brother)should be accepted and loved, scruples and all!”
Romans 14:2, For one believeth that he may eat all things: another,
who is weak, eateth herbs.
I. The weak man in this case insisted that all should be vegetarians.
II. Other Christians had faith to eat all things; that is, meat and
vegetables.
A. 1 Timothy 4:1-5, Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the
latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to
seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils: Speaking lies in
hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats,
which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of
them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of
God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with
thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
B. Mark 7:19, Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the
belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats
III. Even the apostles had problems of conscience regarding dietary
restrictions years after the church was established.
A. Acts 10:14, But Peter said, Not so Lord; for I have never eaten
anything that is common or unclean.
Romans 14:3, Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not;
and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God
hath received him.
I. The one who has faith to eat all things is not to disdain, set at naught,
look down upon the vegetarian who is such because of conscience sake.
A. How easy it is to look down upon, ridicule, label those who
disagree with us!
B. This group was more likely to consist of Gentile Christians.
6
II. The vegetarian is not to look down upon, judge, condemn the disciple
that eats all things.
A. This group was more likely to consist of Jewish Christians.
Note: Dietary questions were complicated by racial factors.
III. Why God has received both the conscientious vegetarian and the
conscientious eater of all things.
Romans 14:4, Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant To
his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up:
for God is able to make him stand.
I. What right do you have (Who do you think you are) to judge the
servant of another, Christ’s servant
A. John 12:47, And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I
judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the
world.
B. James 4:11, 12, Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that
speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh
evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law,
thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one
lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that
judgest another
C. 1 Corinthians 4:5, Therefore judge nothing before the time, until
the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of
darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and
then shall every man have praise of God.
II. The servant’s own lord is the one alone who approves or disapproves
his servant’s conduct.
7
III. The weak brother will stand, be approved because the Lord has
power to make him stand, approve him.
A. 1 Peter 4:8, And above all things have fervent charity among
yourselves; for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
B. A fallen servant was of no use to his master.
C. The master wants him to stand. We, the master’s other servants,
must help the weak servant to stand in service to his master.
IV. Bear in mind that God judges all his servants, both the “strong” and
the “weak.”
A. The way you judge other Christians may very well be the way
Christ judges you!
B. No man is capable of totally accurate judgment. Avoid such
condemning of others.
C. A condemning, judgmental attitude in a congregation attests to
all that that congregation is devoid of the spirit of Christ.
V. Christians must judge, the Bible commands it, but we must be sure
we judge in keeping with the will and mind of Christ.
A. Matthew 7:15, Beware of false prophets, which come to you in
sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
B. Philippians 3:2, Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers,
beware of the concision.
C. Romans 16:17, 18, Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them
which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine
which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Romans 14:5, One man esteemth one day above another: another
esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his
own mind.
I. Another issue over which weak and strong brethren disagreed was:
A. Shall we esteem each day equally or shall we honor one day
above another
B. Shall we consider one day more sacred than another or shall we
consider every day alike NIV
II. Let each do what he is fully convinced is right (in this matter and
others of like nature).
A. Jewish converts had observed Sabbaths and religious festivals
all their lives.
B. Gentile converts were not accustomed to observing any of these
days as holy.
C. 1 John 3:20, For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than
our heart, and knoweth all things.
Romans 14:6, He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord;
and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it.
He that eateth eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he
that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
9
I. Both groups, those who are vegetarians and those who eat all things as
well as those who observe special holy days and those who observe all
days alike, are acceptable to God.
II. Both are acceptable before God because they honor God, give thanks
to God by what they do.
A. Both convictions are motivated by a sincere desire to please,
serve God. Godet.
B. Coffman wrote, “God judges Christians with more regard to
their sincere purpose than with reference to the degree of
perfection in their attainment.”
III. Paul in Romans is talking about sincere people who are trying to
serve God to the best of their ability and about the tolerance each should
have for another’s views.
A. In other scriptures such as those listed below were Judaizers
who sought to bind their views on the church universal, their
way or none.
B. Galatians 4:10, 11, Ye observe days, and months, and times, and
years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labor
in vain.
C. Colossians 2:16, Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in
drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the
Sabbath days:
Romans 14:7, For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to
himself.
I. None of us lives or dies in isolation, totally to himself.
10
A. Therefore, we’d better learn to get along with each other!
B. All we are and all we do belong to the Lord and pleasing God,
not judging our fellow Christians, is the goal, target of our lives.
Romans 14:8, For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and
whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or
die, we are the Lord’s.
I. Whether we Christians live or die, we live or die unto the Lord.
A. Whatever we do we must do it knowing that we belong to the
Lord.
B. Even, in the first century, the behavior of converted slaves in the
service of their Masters was included in this injunction.
1. Ephesians 6:7-9, With good will doing service, as to the
Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good
thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the
Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the
same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing
that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect
of persons with him.
C. Even in death we belong to the Lord.
1. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57, O death, where is thy sting O
grave, where is thy victory The sting of death is sin; and
the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which
giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 14:9, For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and
revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.
11
I. Christ died and rose again that he might become Lord of both the
living and the dead.
A. Christ is our Lord not only in this world but in the world to
come as well.
1. Matthew 22:32, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of
Isaac, and the God of Jacob God is not the God of the
dead, but of the living.
B. The human condition was and is so deplorable that a
monumental supernatural event was required to remedy the
problem.
Romans 14:10, But why dost thou judge thy brother Or why dost
thou set at nought thy brother For we shall all stand before the
judgment seat of Christ.
I. Why then do you:
A. judge your brother
B. look down on your brother
II. Human pride is clearly evident here.
A. “There is no place for uncharitable judgments or self-righteous
exclusiveness among Christians.” Greathouse via Coffman.
B. “Stop judging your brother for God will judge you and him.”
Coffman.
III. It is before the judgment seat of God we stand!
12
A. Christians do not stand or fall on the judgment of other
Christians.
B. We will all need God’s mercy. Who are you to put yourself in
God’s judgment seat
Romans 14:11, For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee
shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
I. Paul quoted Isaiah 45:23,
A. As I live, saith the Lord, to me every knee shall bow.
B. And every tongue shall confess to God.
II. Paul quoted, referred to this passage otherwise.
A. Isaiah 45:23, I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of
my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me
every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
B. Philippians 2:10, 22, That at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things
under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
C. While Isaiah referred to all people, righteous and wicked, Paul
in Romans 14:11 applied it to Christians.
Romans 14:12, So then, every one of us shall give account of himself
to God.
I. All of us must give an account of himself to God,
A. not to self-righteous, judgmental Christians.
13
B. We must all bear our own burdens before God’s judgment seat
and give account of ourselves.
C. There we will be pleading for mercy, not judging our fellow
Christians.
II. Thomas via Coffman wrote, “Earthly Christians are not lords to pass
judgment upon their fellows;”
Romans 14:13, Let us not therefore judge one another any more:
but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an
occasion to fall in his brother’s way
I. Paul firmly commanded:
A. Let us not judge one another any more:
1. “Us” includes even Paul. This is a universal command for
all Christians.
2. By including himself he was able to make his appeal more
effectively.
B. Judge this instead:
1. Let no man put a stumbling block in his neighbor’s way,
nor an occasion of falling.
2. Our determination must be to do nothing that would
weaken or cause a fellow Christian to sin.
Romans 14:14, I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that
there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any
thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
14
I. Paul said he knew, was fully convinced by reason and revelation that:
A. Nothing, no food is unclean of itself.
1. Many things are unclean of themselves such as adultery,
etc.
2. Here Paul was speaking only of meats and the Jewish
ceremonial distinction between clean and unclean meats.
B. Those who regard something as unclean, to that person it is
unclean.
1. That which is not of itself sinful becomes guilt producing
to the person whose conscience leads him to believe it is
sinful.
Romans 14:15, But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now
walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for
whom Christ died.
I. If a weak brother is grieved, caused to sin by my insistence on
exercising my Christian liberty, in this case in regard to eating
ceremonially unclean meat, I do not show my love for my Christian
brother by stubbornly continuing to do what is optional.
A. Does this lead to the work of the church being under the control
of weak brothers
B. Greathouse via Coffman wrote that the real danger was in
influencing the weak brother to do what he regarded as sinful in
violation of his conscience.
http://www.BibleStudyWorkshop.com
15
II. We are not to unnecessarily offend, cause to sin, perish a brother for
whom Christ died.
A. 1 John 3:14, 15, We know that we have passed from death unto
life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his
brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a
murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life
abiding in him.
B. 1 Corinthians 8:11, 12, And through thy knowledge shall the
weak brother perish, for whom Christ died But when ye sin so
against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin
against Christ.
C. It is a grievous sin to fail to show love for other Christians!
D. Coffman well stated, “. . . a brother’s soul may well be lost
because of a loveless attitude on the part of a “strong
Christian.”
morally indifferent, before this conviction is acted upon a
determination must be made as to whether or not this action will
affect the peace of the church and the Christian growth of
others.”
