I am excited about my new post as Chairman of the Board of 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. This dynamic healthcare 

system is not only a major economic driver for the Mid-South, 

but also a one-of-a-kind place of healing for Mid-South 

residents and beyond. 

My fellow board members and the executive team at 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare take our roles as stewards 

of the health system’s resources very seriously, and every 

decision we make causes us to ask ourselves, “Is this the right 

thing to do for patients and their families” 

As we take on new building projects, add services, make 

purchases, and form partnerships, we are always laser 

focused on our strategic goals that will move the health 

system forward and serve our patients and their families best.

When I meet with other business leaders throughout the city, I often hear stories of praise for 

the exceptional care provided by Methodist doctors, nurses and other caregivers. I take 

tremendous pride in being associated with all of these fine individuals, many of them unsung, 

who make a huge impact on patients’ and families’ lives every day. While I enjoy these 

encounters, I also think it is important for me and other Methodist leaders to know when care 

provided was less than stellar. Only then can we work to ensure that every patient experience 

reflects our mission, vision and values.

Letter from the CEO 

When I think of the thousands of people who depend on 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and the dedicated 

Associates and physician partners who care for them, it gives 

me great satisfaction and pride. We have been a part of the 

fabric of this community for the better part of a century and it is 

for the privilege of serving you that we exist. 

Over the past year, sustainability for our health system and the 

earth’s resources has been a focus as we prepare to care for 

generations to come. A new Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital 

and Women’s and Children’s Pavilion at Methodist 

Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital were opened and built 

according to U.S. Green Building Council standards. Green 

construction also began on a new hospice residence, set to 

open in 2011.

At Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, we believe that transparency is the best policy. That’s 

why we placed two of our key indicators – our quality scores and our emergency room wait 

times – on our Web site so that patients can make better informed decisions about their 

healthcare. 

We continue to make significant strides in our quality journey and are proud to have been 

listed as a U.S. News and World Report America’s Best Hospital for adult orthopedics. The 

Joint Commission awarded certification for heart attack and stroke at Methodist University 

Hospital with accreditation following for our Memphis hospitals. A strategic affiliation began 

with Columbia University Medical Center’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, with the goal of 

becoming a top 50 Cardiovascular Center in the country. 

A significant part of the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare DNA is our mission and deep belief in 

the connection between faith and health. Towards the end of 2010, we will open our new 

Center of Excellence in Faith and Health located at Methodist University Hospital. As we continue 

to build our culture of patient- and family-centered care, the space will house a brandnew 

family care area and provide a collaborative space for research, innovation and training. 

All the good that has been done this year has been in the midst of massive changes in the way 

healthcare is delivered. Healthcare reform brings many challenges to our organization, and as 

always, we look for the most innovative, efficient ways to be good stewards of our resources. 

That’s why physician alignment has become and will continue to be an important goal for us.

Teamwork 

By attracting and retaining diverse, yet like-minded 

individuals who embrace and support Methodist 

Le Bonheur Healthcare’s core values of service, 

quality, integrity and teamwork, we are able to 

provide compassionate patient- and familycentered 

care. Weaving together the varied 

backgrounds and experience of our 10,000 

Associates forms an extraordinary, supportive 

culture. And while our experiences are many, our 

goal is singular – to be the Mid-South’s top 

healthcare provider, and to reach that goal together. 

Perhaps one of the greatest attributes of our 

Associates lies in their generosity. Whether it’s 

giving to fellow Associates in need, to the United 

Way, volunteering their time with one of our 

Adopt-a-Schools or participating in one our many 

community health screening events, Methodist 

Associates show us over and over again how much 

they care about our patients, their families, our 

community and each other. In 2009 alone, 

Methodist Le Bonheur Associates contributed 

$480,000 to the Methodist Foundation Humanitarian 

Fund and $500,000 for the United Way. 

Inspiration Awards 

Every quarter, Associates from across the system 

are chosen to receive a Miracle in Motion award, 

and each year, one of these Associates is chosen to 

receive an Inspiration Award. In 2009, we had a 

special team of nurses inspire us; Carol Shelton and 

Patient Care Coordinators Lynne Sherer, and 

Jennifer Harper, of Methodist North Hospital. 

When a patient with a terminal diagnosis agreed to 

marry her fiancé after finding out her health was 

rapidly failing, Carol, Lynne and Jennifer rushed to 

accommodate the couple’s wish to marry in the 

chapel at Methodist North Hospital the next day. 

From decorations, to flowers and veil, this dedicated 

trio worked with chaplains and the family to make 

the patient’s dream come true overnight. Thank you 

for being an inspiration to all of us. 

In recognition of this positive, giving environment at 

Methodist, we were named to Modern Healthcare’s 

“Top 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare” list for 

2009 - one of only three Tennessee organizations to 

make the list.

Le Bonheur Grand Opening Ceremony

Growth 

Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital 

Thanks to the generosity of a grateful community, we 

built a brand new Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. 

December 2010 is move-in month for patients and 

Associates in the new 255-bed, $340 million hospital – 

the largest children's hospital in the state of Tennessee. 

With nearly double the space for patient care, research 

and teaching, the new Le Bonheur will allow the 

hospital to continue to be a resource for families; to 

recruit and retain top talent from around the country; 

and expand pediatric medicine for decades to come. 

Methodist Hospice Residence 

Thanks to the support of many, the Methodist Hospice 

Residence is expected to open in May 2011. It’s a place 

like home for those with a short time to live and a place 

for families and friends to share in the last days of a 

loved one’s life. Thanks to the facility’s special design, 

patients will be able to enjoy fresh air and sunshine 

outside in the winding garden areas or enjoy the view 

from their room. The facility also includes a chapel, 

areas where loved ones can gather and a kitchen 

where families can cook meals. 

More than $103 million of the $340-million construction 

costs were donated by the Memphis and Mid-South 

community, making it the largest fundraising campaign 

in the city’s history. 

Le Bonheur also opened the region's first Fetal Center, 

to provide high-risk pregnant mothers access to our 

pediatric experts before their baby is born. The Fetal 

Center provides them with a comprehensive and 

coordinated plan for their baby's care while in utero and 

after birth. 

The Methodist Hospice Residence will provide acute 

care for those who require symptom and pain 

management as well as short-term residential beds for 

those who cannot be cared for in their homes. Funding 

for the project came from physicians, private donors, 

the Assisi Foundation of Memphis and several families 

that have been touched by hospice. 

Methodist is constructing a Leadership in Energy and 

Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building as a part 

of the hospital’s pledge to be good stewards of 

resources. 

Olive Branch 

In 2011, we will break ground on a 100-bed hospital in 

Olive Branch, the fastest growing city in the fastest 

growing county in Mississippi. Methodist already 

serves approximately 7,000 inpatients and 47,000 

outpatients from Mississippi, who currently must travel 

out of state for care to stay in their health plan. 

The hospital will provide full-service health care to this 

booming population as well as stimulate 

economic growth in the area.

The Women’s and Children’s Pavilion at Germantown Hospital

Women’s and Children’s Pavilion 

The new Women’s and Children’s Pavilion at Methodist 

Le Bonheur Germantown opened in early 2010, 

featuring room for 100 additional patients, 600 more 

parking spaces and 24 private neonatal intensive care 

unit (NICU) rooms for parents and their newborns. The 

Pavilion is one of only a handful of hospitals nationwide 

to receive gold-level certification from the LEED 

system, designated by the U.S. Green Building Council. 

Center of Excellence 

in Faith and Health 

As a faith-based institution rooted in The United 

Methodist Church, it is only natural that within the 

walls of Methodist University Hospital will soon be the 

first-ever Center of Excellence in Faith and Health. 

The scope of its work will be local, national and even 

international. Because we recognize family members 

as an important part of the care team, the hub of this 

newly renovated 16,000 square foot area will be a 

state-of-the-art family care space, formerly the 

intensive care waiting room. The Center will also offer 

space for interfaith training, research, reflection and 

innovation. 

Healthcare Family. Additionally, Le Bonheur 

Children's Hospital and the University of Tennessee 

Health Science Center jointly launched a new 

pediatric specialty faculty group practice – UT 

Le Bonheur Pediatric Specialists. 

Methodist University Hospital 

Transplant Institute 

The only abdominal transplant program in West 

Tennessee, the Methodist University Hospital 

Transplant Institute continues to have great success, 

giving new life to 250 patients in 2009. In partnership 

with the University of Tennessee Health Science 

Center, the program became the seventh largest 

program in the nation for liver transplantation and 35th 

in kidney transplantation. Thanks to our dedicated team 

of physicians and multi-disciplinary transplant team 

members, the Transplant Institute’s one-year graft 

survival and life expectancy outcomes are among the 

best in the nation. The transplant program recently 

achieved Center of Excellence status from all major 

insurers, including Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Blue 

Distinction Centers for Transplant (BDCT), which 

signifies that the program meets stringent clinical 

criteria in balance with growing transplant volume. 

Physician Partnerships 

Healthcare reform has caused health providers and 

physicians to seek new ways to align for better 

efficiency and sustainability. This year Sutherland 

Cardiology Clinic and The CardioVascular Center 

became a part of the Methodist Le Bonheur 

Center of Excellence in Faith and Health

The Best Policy: 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare believes in 

transparency and open, honest communication about 

quality to allow consumers to make informed 

healthcare decisions. To us, the more patients and 

their families understand about healthcare quality, the 

more of an informed partner they become in their care. 

The shift toward transparency began six years ago, 

when Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare made the 

decision to be among the first health systems in the 

country to embrace electronic medical records and 

physician order entry. The electronic medical record 

has helped us not only track the quality of several key 

indicators from patient admission to discharge, but it 

has allowed us to share this information more easily 

with our patients. 

A few major transparency initiatives were launched this 

year on our consumer websites, methodisthealth.org 

and lebonheur.org. Patients are now able to view key 

quality indicator scores on our site for several 

conditions which empower them to make informed 

decisions about their care. Emergency room wait 

times are also published for all five of our adult hospital 

locations, and the times update every two minutes. In 

addition, to improve the emergency room experience, 

both Methodist South and Methodist North offer 

30-minute guarantees from the time patients register 

to the time they are seen by a doctor, nurse practitioner 

or physician’s assistant. Another online initiative allows 

consumers to view next available screening 

mammography appointment times on our website. 

We are proud of the many accolades we 

have received this past year surrounding 

quality care. Main awards and 

recognition include: 

In 2010, U.S. News and World Report 

magazine ranked Methodist Hospitals 

on its prestigious list of the Best 

Hospitals in the nation for orthopedic 

care. Methodist ranked #27 in the 

nation out of 1,600 hospitals based on 

our clinical outcomes, volumes and our reputation 

among physicians. 

Methodist Healthcare announced a strategic 

partnership with Columbia University Medical 

Center’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The 

cardiovascular clinical and management group 

services team, named Columbia Heartsouce SM , 

shares clinical and quality guidance, access to 

Columbia clinical research trials, physician training 

and education in innovative cardiovascular 

procedures. Together, the partnership aims to 

make Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare a top 

50 Cardiovascular Center in the country.

Quality 

All four of our qualifying acute-care hospitals became 

accredited Certified Chest Pain Centers by the 

Society of Chest Pain Centers. Methodist University 

Hospital also received The Gold Seal 

of Approval TM 

from The Joint 

Commission as a Certified AMI 

(Acute Myocardial Infarction-heart 

attack) Program. 

One ranking Methodist Healthcare aims to combat is 

the Mid-South’s listing in the “stroke-belt”, a seven state 

region in the southeast where the stroke death rate is 

1.5 times the national average. Methodist 

Germantown, North, South and University became 

certified Primary Stroke Centers through earning the 

Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission. 

Methodist Healthcare was recognized for five awards 

by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services 

(CMS) Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration Project. 

The project rewards hospitals for high quality care 

based on process of care and patient outcomes. 

Methodist received the following awards: 

• Attainment Award – AMI (acute myocardial 

infarction), Heart Failure, Pneumonia, CABG 

(coronary artery bypass graft), Hip & Knee 

Replacement 

• Improvement Award – AMI (acute myocardial

In 2009, Methodist Fayette Hospital was recognized 

twice as a leader in rural health. The Leapfrog 

Leadership in Pneumonia Care Quality and Cost 

Award by the Memphis Business Group on Health 

(MBGH) acknowledged the hospital’s high ratings on 

the 2008 Leapfrog Hospital survey for the treatment of 

pneumonia. It is the only national survey to report a 

hospital-efficiency score, which is a combination of a 

hospital’s quality of care and use of resources.

2009 Heart Walk: Methodist Le Bonheur 

Healthcare’s team of 500 walkers raised $58,772 

for the American Heart Association.

Commitment to Our Community 

We take our mission seriously and are committed to 

giving back to the community in a meaningful way. 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare continues to be the 

largest provider of TennCare services in the state, and 

our facilities provide access in all areas of the city and 

county. As a faith-based institution, access to 

healthcare for all of the community is important to us. 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare provides over $125 

million of net community benefit expense* to Charity, 

Medicaid, TennCare, Medical Education, and 

community services. 

We work hard to become a part of the fabric of the 

communities we serve to be a good partner, a reliable 

neighbor…an irreplaceable resource. 

A medical mission team from Le Bonheur traveled to 

Haiti in early February 2010 to care for children and 

adult victims of the nation's catastrophic earthquake. 

During its two-week trip, the team treated 900 patients 

and performed 165 surgeries. The team included two 

pediatric orthopedic surgeons, a trauma surgeon, 

critical care specialist, anesthesiologist and certified 

nurse anesthetist, paramedic and surgery technician. 

More than 18,000 Mid-Southerners were screened at 

420 health screening events, and we participated in 

community health fairs reaching more than 7,200 

people and staffed first aid tents at various events. 

Methodist supported the American Heart Association 

with a $25,000 gift and our Associates raised $58,772 

on their own for the AHA’s annual Heart Walk. 

A few of our highlights from 2009-2010 

include: 

Methodist donated supplies and personnel for a 

variety of projects including over $1,530 in Cardioscans 

and mammograms for various charity organizations, 

over $15,000 in surgical items to CrossLinks and 

Missions of Mercy, over $2,000 in supplies and furniture 

to local schools. We also donated medical supplies to 

overseas mission trips. 

Le Bonheur led the nation with an innovative triage 

system during the H1N1 swine flu pandemic. 

Le Bonheur erected a 2,500 square foot, temperature 

controlled tent in its parking lot to offer flu screenings 

using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 

high-risk protocol. In all, 1,145 children were examined in 

the tent, all within minutes of arrival. When the H1N1 

vaccine became available weeks later, Le Bonheur 

Children's was the first in the nation to administer it. 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare was recognized by the 

Mid-South Food Bank for raising over $8,000 in support 

of the Operation Feed campaign.

Camp Bravehearts is a family grief camp held each 

summer to help children ages 6-16 cope with the 

death of a family member or friend.

Community 

The Congregational Health Network, an initiative of our 

Faith and Health division, is engaged in relationships 

with more than 280 churches throughout the Memphis 

area. The division held numerous seminars, 

workshops and retreats for area clergy for the purpose 

of healing, public health and health awareness. 

Le Bonheur established a new outpatient clinic to 

provide forensic medical examinations for children who 

had been sexually abused. The clinic complements the 

Le Bonheur Child Assessment Program, which 

evaluates and provides counseling for child victims of 

maltreatment or neglect. 

Le Bonheur partnered with Memphis city parks 

services, community centers and local swim groups to 

create Make a Splash Mid-South, an organization 

formed in response to the drowning deaths of two 

teenagers in city pools. Since its creation, Make a 

Splash has funded swim lessons for hundreds of 

disadvantaged children, and instituted a diversity swim 

meet and lifeguard training to improve water safety. 

Passionate health care leaders, fundraisers and 

citizens launched a campaign to raise $5 million to 

create the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of 

Memphis. The Methodist Healthcare Foundation is 

working with campaign chairman Jim McGehee to 

create the only comprehensive inpatient center in 

the area, at Methodist University Hospital. 

Le Bonheur's Center for Children and Parents was 

tapped by the state of Tennessee Department of 

Health to implement the Nurse Family Partnership in 

Shelby County, an evidence-based home visitation 

program for 100 vulnerable first-time mothers. Nurses 

in this program follow moms from early in their 

pregnancy through the child's second birthday. 

Le Bonheur partnered with 12 childcare centers to 

provide early intervention services for children ages 

birth to 3 with ongoing developmental needs. This 

Le Bonheur Early Intervention and Development 

partnership provides inclusive environments for 

typically developing children and those with special 

needs and is the first program of its kind in 

Tennessee.

Commitment to Diversity 

From 1999 to 2009, MLH spending with minority and 

women-owned vendors has grown from 4 percent to 

approximately 12 percent of annual spending. Total 

minority and women-owned vendor spending in 2009 

was $70.5 million up from $41.8 million in 2008. This 

remarkable 68 percent increase was substantially 

related to local minority and women-owned businesses 

participation in the Germantown and Le Bonheur 

building projects. 

Methodist was recognized over the last few years for 

setting the standard for successful partnering by the 

Mid-South Minority Business Council (MMBC), the 

Black Business Association (BBA), the Small Business 

Administration, the Memphis Business Development 

Corporation and Premier, our national group 

purchasing organization.

monumental strides to impact the community via 

supplier diversity, workforce diversity, internal diversity 

and community giving that has an economic impact 

among minorities. 

Methodist North Hospital is one of only six hospitals 

nationwide chosen by the Robert Wood Johnson 

Foundation to participate in a new effort to improve the 

quality and equality of cardiac care delivered by 

hospitals to racial and ethnic minority populations. The 

Aligning Forces for Quality: Equity Quality Improvement 

Collaborative (Equity QI Collaborative) will identify and 

test ways for hospitals to improve the quality of their 

cardiac care, while also identifying and reducing any 

racial and ethnic disparities. 

Methodist continued to build on our sense of fairness, 

with president and CEO Gary Shorb being named the 

Model Diversity Corporation CEO of the Year at the 

Mid-South Minority Business Council Robert R. Church 

Sr. Achievement Awards. Methodist continues to 

demonstrate its commitment to diversity and inclusion

On the Horizon 

Health Care Reform 

With the passage of healthcare reform legislation. 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is monitoring the 

landscape closely and working to increase efficiencies, 

partner wisely and leverage the power of digital 

information to better serve our patients. Some 

provisions take effect this year, but many more will 

unfold in the coming years. More Americans will have 

some form of insurance going forward, and hospitals 

have agreed to contribute $155 billion over 10 years to 

help pay for this legislation, largely by accepting lower 

payments under the Medicare program for older 

Americans.

Corporate Sustainability 

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare wants to continue to 

be a vital community resource not just now but for 

years to come. To maintain our commitment to caring 

for our community, we have completed a 

comprehensive corporate sustainability study. Our 

hope is that this study will pave the way toward 

ensuring that we create long-term value by identifying 

Associates plan for a successful Blueprint for Hope, 

the 2010 Associate Campaign, led by the Methodist Foundation.
