promise to our region, our promise to the more than 

250,000 people – our friends and neighbors – who pass 

through the doors of 100 Park Street or one of our 28 

regional locations each year. 

It is a promise we will never forget. 

For more than 110 years, Glens Falls Hospital has been the 

health care safety net for 3,300 square miles. Saratoga, 

Warren, Washington, Hamilton and Essex Counties – and 

since 2003 Northern Rensselaer County – all rely on the 

only hospital Emergency Room in the Capital Region that 

never goes on diversion; our promise is that we are always 

here for you. 

We promise access to the latest cancer care treatments, 

clinical trials, family and patient support programs – in 

fact, the complete continuum of cancer care – for the 

more than 1,000 people who will be newly diagnosed 

with cancer this year. 

Big-City Medicine means patient specific instrumentation 

– state-of-the-art prostheses for those who need a 

knee replacement. It means a $1.5 million investment 

in the newest surgical instrumentation thanks to the Wood Foundation Challenge of 2009. Angioplasty, 

neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, and the return of advanced imaging services to Washington County; all are 

part of our promise. 

Hometown Care is our promise of school based health in the Whitehall Central School District and the 

Hadley-Luzerne Central School District – where 97% of the students are enrolled in this primary care 

program. It is Girls on the Run and Girls on Track, where parents and young women run together and learn a 

healthy active lifestyle. It is the safer walk ways and bikeways established by the Healthy Heart Program, and 

our commitment to exceptional customer service no matter which Glens Falls Hospital location you may visit.

The Hospital’s Nutrition Services Department hosts a weekly farmers market 

in the Hospital’s cafeteria during the summer months.

The Regional Diabetes Center provides education and support to people 

with, or at risk for, diabetes. Each year diabetes kills more people than breast 

cancer and AIDS combined. Our mission is to emphasize education and 

lifestyle changes for those at risk in the prevention of Type 2 diabetes, and 

provide self-management skills training to those living with Type 1 diabetes.

Glens Falls Hospital partners with several local community agencies to offer 

the Girls on the Run Program at area elementary and middle schools. The 

program focuses on building self esteem and healthy lifestyle choices.

The Cambridge Family Health Center coordinates a self-paced walking 

program to support the health and well-being of residents in Washington 

County. Each participant is encouraged to walk at designated locations using 

a walking map of Cambridge. In addition, they each receive a pedometer, 

walking logs, t-shirts, handouts and a food diary. Watch for this well-received 

service in your community.

Glens Falls Hospital has a service area that stretches across six counties and 3,300 square 

miles. In addition to the main campus, the Hospital operates 28 regional health care facilities 

including locations in Cambridge, Corinth, Fort Edward, Glens Falls, Granville, Greenwich, 

Hoosick Falls, Hudson Falls, Salem, Saratoga, Whitehall and Wilton.

When Southern Washington County lost its hospital, Glens Falls Hospital stepped in to fill 

the void. The doctors, who spent years knowing and caring for people in the community, 

remained and new physicians were added to expand available services. In 2009, the Hospital 

opened the Greenwich Regional Medical Center to carry on the continuum of care in the 

region.

Glens Falls Hospital is the region’s largest employer, with certified specialists in internal 

medicine, family practice, endocrinology, nephrology, ENT, thoracic surgery and neurosurgery.

Urgent Care at the Cambridge Family Health Center provides prompt, walk-in care for nonlife-threatening 

injuries or illnesses 365 days per year.

The new Greenwich Regional Medical Center houses a radiology suite including CT, 

ultrasound, mammography and bone density. Expanded specialty care includes cardiology, 

orthopedics, endocrinology and diabetic education, urology, nephrology, general surgery, 

gastroenterology, neurosurgery, oncology, and rehabilitative medicine.

Several sites host GFH affiliated specialists such as oncologists, cardiologists and surgeons. 

This allows us to bring the specialists to the patient instead of the patient to the specialist.

The Hospital has a School-Based Health Program, offering primary care, health education 

and counseling services on the campuses of the Whitehall Central School District and 

Hadley-Luzerne Central School District. 97 percent of the students at these schools are 

enrolled in the program.

The Snuggery at Glens Falls Hospital provides new parents with family-centered, 

single-room maternity care. This means the family will experience each step of the 

birthing process in the quiet comfort of their own private room.

The Snuggery offers a wide array of educational programs to help families 

prepare for childbirth and the joys of being a parent. Programs are presented on 

such topics as childbirth preparation, infant massage, breastfeeding and a “boot 

camp” for dads.

The Snuggery hosts an annual Expectant Mother’s Celebration. This free-ofcharge 

event helps educate expectant and new moms and their family members 

on a number of topics related to birthing and childcare.

Glens Falls Hospital offers a “Super Sitters” class that teaches boys and girls the 

skills necessary to become proficient, caring and safety-minded babysitters.

We recognize a hospital stay can be scary – especially for children. That’s why 

we have a dedicated pediatric unit dubbed “The Kids Cove,” a bright and colorful 

ocean-themed setting exclusively for children. All treatments are provided in our 

special “Ouch Room,” which helps children associate their hospital room with rest 

and relaxation, rather than with medical procedures. Children staying in “The Kids 

Cove” are treated to gift bags on their birthday, toys and special exercise-related 

video games that are not only fun, but also help with the healing process.

The New York State Osteoporosis Prevention & Education Resource Center at 

Glens Falls Hospital partners with RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Programs) of 

Warren, Washington, and Saratoga counties to bring the Osteobusters Exercise 

Program free-of-charge to seniors living with osteoporosis. Osteobusters is a 

low-impact exercise program that concentrates on the prevention and treatment 

of osteoporosis through exercise and education, two important components to 

reduce the risks associated with this condition.

As your family-focused birthing center, The Snuggery lets new parents experience 

each step of the birthing process in the quiet comfort of a spacious, private room, 

while benefitting from the most comprehensive, individualized care possible.

The 64-Slice CT Scanner in our Medical Imaging Department is able to 

noninvasively capture images of any organ in just seconds. Images of the heart 

and coronaries that previously took 20-25 seconds to obtain with a 16-Slice 

Scanner, can now be captured in fewer than five heartbeats.

The digital mammography unit at the new Greenwich Regional Medical Center 

is the only permanent unit in all of Washington County.

With the acquisition of a fourth digital mammography unit, The Breast Center, 

a service of the C.R. Wood Cancer Center, is now offering digital mammography 

screening at a new location – Advanced Imaging at Baybrook in Queensbury. This 

unit helps doctors detect breast cancer in its earliest stages by providing sharper, 

more detailed images of breast tissue.

The Wound Healing Center at Glens Falls Hospital has been recognized for two 

straight years with a Front Runners Award from National Healing Corporation. The 

Center earned this distinction for excellence in wound care and hyperbaric oxygen 

treatment.

Through the generosity of our community, Glens Falls Hospital was able to 

acquire cutting-edge surgical equipment in 2009. These advances include a 

new Orthopedic Trauma Table, considered to be the gold standard in orthopedic 

fracture tables; six Laparoscopic Towers which use minimally invasive technology 

to move patients through procedures faster and help them recover quicker; and 

new orbit surgical lights in the operating rooms. The video towers utilize high 

definition camera heads, providing clear, precise images, and flat video screens are 

mounted on articulating arms to enhance visibility during procedures.

As the region’s only Nationally Accredited Cancer Center, we are dedicated to providing you 

with a comprehensive program of cancer care and vast array of support services, should cancer 

touch you or someone in your life.

Healthy Steps is an exercise class for breast cancer survivors that helps women reduce the risk 

of lymphedema after surgery or treatment. The program received national acclaim in 2009 by 

winning awards for music videos featuring the program’s exercise routines.

We offer Next Steps, a 12-week group training program for community members who have 

completed medical treatment, live with a chronic illness or are merely interested in starting a 

healthier lifestyle. The program culminates with a 5k event.

Our Uniquely You Boutique and Salon® provides free-of-charge services to our patients. A small 

donation is accepted from patients outside the Center to cover the cost of a wig. A licensed 

cosmetologist provides assistance in the selection, styling and care of wigs, as well as the wearing 

of turbans, hats and scarves. She also provides haircuts for inpatients in the Oncology Unit.

The C. R. Wood Cancer Center is actively participating in over 40 clinical trials, working closely 

with the National Cancer Institute.

Cindy’s Comfort Camp focuses on children and teens ages six to 17 who have experienced 

the death or serious illness of a parent or sibling. The Cancer Center also coordinates a retreat for 

women living with and beyond cancer called Cindy’s Retreat and a retreat for men living with and 

beyond cancer called the C.G. Men’s Retreat. All retreats were developed to honor the late Cindy 

Ginsburg of Saratoga Springs, a former cancer patient and long-time supporter of the Hospital.

Glens Falls Hospital, in cooperation with the Cancer Center, offers annual free-of-charge 

skin cancer screenings to the public, and provides free breast and cervical screening as well as 

colorectal cancer screening kits to age-appropriate individuals without health insurance.

Our Oncology Education and Support Services offer 11 different support groups, both disease 

specific and general cancer support, to help patients and their families cope with cancer in their 

lives.

proactively tracking and looking for ways to improve the Hospital’s energy, 

nutrition, paper and recycling processes.

The Hospital’s Cafeteria and Bistro replaced all polystyrene foam takeout 

containers with a new type of biodegradable container made from potatoes 

called “Tater Ware.”

We now use napkin products containing 100 percent recovered paper fiber 

and 40 percent consumer materials by fiber weight. This effort earned the 

Hospital the Green Seal environmental standard for bleaching, drinking and 

packaging.

New napkin dispensing stations reduced usage by more than 200,000 

napkins in 2009.

32,000 pounds of paper used at the Hospital comes from recycled paper, 

saving approximately one ton of solid waste per year.

our six-county region. With this 24-hour emergency response system, an 

individual can call for help from anywhere in his/her home in the event of an 

injury, illness or worsening medical condition.

Glens Falls Hospital has a Tobacco Cessation Center that offers free training, 

technical assistance and resources to health care providers so that they are better 

equipped to offer their patients the most effective, evidence-based treatments 

for tobacco dependence. In 2009 alone, the Tobacco Cessation Center provided 

hands-on training at over 50 health care sites spread over 5 counties, as far away 

as Amsterdam and Gloversville.

In addition to teaching various bicycle and pedestrian safety lessons at the 

Warrensburg Elementary School, the Warren-Washington Healthy Heart Program 

helped install two speed limit feedback signs near the Warrensburg Elementary 

School to protect the welfare of students walking to and from school.

The Warren-Washington Healthy Heart Program supplied the village of 

Hudson Falls with pedestrian flags to make crosswalks safer. Flags are placed at 

busy intersections and pedestrians use them to cross the road.

Glens Falls Hospital’s patient financial assistance program was recently 

expanded to outpatients. This important step illustrates the Hospital’s 

commitment to providing accessible, affordable, basic health care to more 

people at more locations, than any other health care organization, across our 

3,300 square mile service area. In addition, the program goes beyond State 

mandates to provide assistance to those earning up to 300 percent of the 

poverty level.

Since our founding in 1897, through the investment 

and involvement of local people, the history of Glens 

Falls Hospital is testament to what our community can 

accomplish. The Hospital could not have become the 

comprehensive institution it is today without private 

philanthropic support. Since our inception people have 

contributed to our growth and, therefore, the growth and 

health of the community. 

For more than a decade we have acknowledged those who have 

shared their intentions to include Glens Falls Hospital in their estate plans. 

This group is an integral part of our community. They look to advance the Hospital for future 

generations, while being mindful of our past. 

This circular view, with the Hospital’s beginning as the center, has prompted us to reflect on a more 

personal name for the individuals who have made known their intentions. Henceforth, they will be 

known as the Glens Falls Hospital 1897 Circle. A circle is a never-ending ring of life. Becoming 

part of a beneficial circle is encompassing and inviting for all involved. 

In the logo, the 18 and 97 are purposely split to further emphasize the significance of this “circle of 

life.” One ancient tradition associates letters to numbers. The word for Life (Chai), consists of two 

Hebrew letters whose equivalent equals 18. Because the numerical equivalent of these two letters 

“adds up to” LIFE, 18 is a lucky number for many – believed to ensure good luck and long life. 

We celebrate our friends who have reached beyond their own lives to enhance the opportunities 

for future generations. By doing so, they have expressed their generosity and love of the Hospital 

through a planned gift. Glens Falls Hospital salutes these friends as visionaries of our 21 st Century

have helped Glens Falls Hospital purchase a number of new, technologicallyadvanced 

pieces of surgical equipment – devices that could someday save your 

life or that of a family member or friend. 

These devices generate far more heat, and are far more sensitive to temperature 

fluctuations and humidity levels than earlier technologies. To ensure optimum 

performance, our Surgery Center’s heating/ventilation/air conditioning system 

– and the roof that supports it – must be updated. Your gift to the 2010 Annual 

Fund will help make these critical improvements and lead the way for even 

greater surgical excellence in the years to come. 

We hope we can count on your support. 

Please be part of the community-wide celebration called Let’s Raise the Roof 

to raise $1.5 million for the Floyd H. Rourke Inpatient Surgery Center. 

The Center is one of the busiest areas of the hospital, with our talented 

surgeons and staff performing more than 16,000 procedures each year.
