The Department of Geography at<br />

Simon Fraser University<br />

<strong>in</strong>vites applications for a tenure track faculty appo<strong>in</strong>tment<br />

<strong>in</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape ecology/biogeography. We seek a scientist<br />

with <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> ecological/biogeographical processes <strong>and</strong><br />

patterns, <strong>and</strong> model<strong>in</strong>g such processes <strong>and</strong> patterns across a<br />

range of l<strong>and</strong>scape scales from local to global, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

role of human-environment <strong>in</strong>teractions. L<strong>in</strong>ks to o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

branches of physical geography/earth system science are<br />

desirable. The appo<strong>in</strong>tment will be at <strong>the</strong> rank of Assistant<br />

Professor <strong>and</strong> will ideally beg<strong>in</strong> September 1, 2010.<br />

Applicants must have completed a PhD by <strong>the</strong> time of<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>and</strong> should demonstrate a promise of excellence<br />

<strong>in</strong> research <strong>and</strong> effectiveness <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

undergraduate <strong>and</strong> graduate levels <strong>in</strong> a Physical Geography<br />

Program. Prime teach<strong>in</strong>g responsibilities will be to <strong>in</strong>struct<br />

undergraduate courses <strong>in</strong> biogeography <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape ecology<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> undergraduate programs of Physical Geography<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong>al Science (which <strong>in</strong>cludes develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an applied biological conservation stream) plus related<br />

graduate courses, <strong>and</strong> to provide research direction <strong>and</strong><br />

graduate supervision <strong>in</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape ecology <strong>and</strong> biogeography.<br />

Ability to <strong>in</strong>struct <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r undergraduate courses <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Physical Geography Program is an asset. The appo<strong>in</strong>tee<br />

will be responsible for establish<strong>in</strong>g an externally funded<br />

Project Description:<br />

One or more postdoctoral positions are available <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Environment</strong>al Sciences Division of <strong>the</strong> Oak Ridge National<br />

Laboratory. The successful c<strong>and</strong>idate(s) will jo<strong>in</strong> a multi-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

team of <strong>in</strong>vestigators undertak<strong>in</strong>g a broad, <strong>in</strong>tegrated field<br />

experimental study to assess <strong>the</strong> response of nor<strong>the</strong>rn peatl<strong>and</strong><br />

ecosystems to <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong> temperature <strong>and</strong> exposures to elevated<br />

atmospheric CO 2 concentrations.<br />

Qualifications:<br />

The successful c<strong>and</strong>idate will have a Ph.D. with experience <strong>in</strong><br />

one or more of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es: plant physiological ecology,<br />

biogeochemistry, peatl<strong>and</strong> hydrology, methane cycl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

high-carbon ecosystems, or global change ecology <strong>in</strong> general.<br />

Prior experience with experimental field ecological research <strong>and</strong><br />

associated laboratory analytical <strong>and</strong> measurement approaches<br />

(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g stable isotopic approaches for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretation of<br />

biological processes <strong>and</strong> mechanisms) <strong>and</strong> an appreciation of<br />

data-model <strong>in</strong>teractions is highly desirable. Ability to work as a<br />

part of a team <strong>and</strong> be comfortable <strong>in</strong> a multi-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary environment<br />

is critical. The successful c<strong>and</strong>idate(s) will have a proven<br />

record of turn<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong>to high-quality journal publications.<br />

Applicants cannot have received <strong>the</strong> most recent degree more<br />

than five years prior to <strong>the</strong> date of application <strong>and</strong> must complete<br />

all degree requirements before start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir appo<strong>in</strong>tment.<br />
