1. Torrid Zone - The area near the Equator is the hottest area in the
world. It is called the Torrid Zone.
2. Frigid Zone - The area near the polar region is called the Frigid Zone.
3. Temperate Zone - The area between the Torrid and Frigid Zone is
called the Temperate Zone.
D. Give reason for the following :
1. Areas near the Equator are the hottest regions - Because the rays of
the sun fall vertically near the equator.
2. Areas near the poles are the coldest regions- Because the sun rays
fall on this area in a slanting way.
3. Areas between the Equator and the poles are the moderate regions -
Because the sun rays spread over a larger area, thus this region has
lower temperature - neither very hot nor very cold.
4. Places near the sea experience moderate climate - Because water
become hot slowly and cools down slowly. So these areas are neither
too hot nor too cold.
5. Places near the sea have humid climate - Because the air near the sea
coast contains more vapours, which make it humid.

in winter.
6. Why are polar areas cooler than equatorial areas
Ans. The rays of the sun fall vertically near the equator and slanting on the
polar region, so polar areas are cooler than equatorial areas.
