The Asian long-horned beetle, ano<strong>the</strong>r invasive insect pest,<br />

is moving north from New York State, posing a threat <strong>to</strong><br />

Ontario’s maple trees – and its maple syrup industry<br />

be treated with antibiotics. Without <strong>the</strong><br />

rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body <strong>to</strong> worry about, <strong>the</strong> treatments<br />

can be more intense.<br />

Last year, 23 lungs that o<strong>the</strong>rwise would have<br />

been discarded were treated and transplanted<br />

in<strong>to</strong> patients (with <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge and consent).<br />

These patients fared no worse than <strong>the</strong> ones who<br />

got <strong>the</strong> usual donor lungs. Cypel thinks that<br />

soon, 100 extra pairs <strong>of</strong> lungs a year could be<br />

salvaged for transplant in Toron<strong>to</strong>, doubling<br />

<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> transplants possible here.<br />

There are currently around 80 people waiting<br />

for lung transplants in Ontario. About a third<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people waiting for lungs will die before<br />

<strong>the</strong>y get <strong>the</strong>m, says Cypel. This technique could<br />

significantly shrink that waiting list.<br />

The ex-vivo lung perfusion costs $8,000 per<br />

set <strong>of</strong> lungs – about what it costs a hospital <strong>to</strong><br />

keep a patient in intensive care for just one day.<br />

This raises <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r just damaged<br />

lungs or all lungs should be evaluated<br />

before transplant, given that proper assessment<br />

could dramatically improve recovery times and<br />

outcomes. “It’s probably <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong> go,” says<br />

Cypel, who is conducting a cost-benefit analysis<br />

on <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>pic. The researchers published <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

overview earlier this year.<br />

The concept is set <strong>to</strong> be used with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

organs, <strong>to</strong>o. Last Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, a group in <strong>the</strong> U.K.<br />

published a report <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first kidney that, like<br />

<strong>the</strong> lungs, had been preserved at near bodytemperature<br />

and perfused with a special <strong>solution</strong>.<br />

That kidney was successfully transplanted<br />

in<strong>to</strong> a recipient – and it compared favourably<br />

<strong>to</strong> its twin kidney, which had been kept in cold<br />

s<strong>to</strong>rage and transplanted in<strong>to</strong> someone else.<br />

Livers will almost certainly be next, and <strong>the</strong>re’s<br />

reason <strong>to</strong> believe that thyroids, ovaries and even<br />

hearts could one day benefit as well.<br />

Ontario’s ash trees from<br />

a deadly invader<br />

OVER THE PAST DECADE, TENS OF MILLIONS <strong>of</strong> ash trees across North America<br />

have died because <strong>of</strong> a hungry green beetle named <strong>the</strong> emerald ash borer.<br />

“It’s a tsunami,” says Pr<strong>of</strong>. Sandy Smith, who estimates that most <strong>of</strong><br />

Toron<strong>to</strong>’s ash trees will be gone within five <strong>to</strong> 10 years.<br />

Smith, dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Forestry, is a forest en<strong>to</strong>mologist who<br />

specializes in finding native, natural enemies <strong>of</strong> insect pests. She and<br />

PhD student Lucas Roscoe have identified a little-known, local parasite<br />

that feeds <strong>of</strong>f – and kills – <strong>the</strong> emerald ash borer.<br />

In collaboration with Canadian Forest Service researchers, Smith and<br />

Roscoe have ga<strong>the</strong>red new data on <strong>the</strong> parasite, which could be used <strong>to</strong><br />

protect areas with ash trees where <strong>the</strong> beetle has not yet arrived. Native <strong>to</strong><br />

Asia, <strong>the</strong> emerald ash borer kills ash trees by laying its eggs under <strong>the</strong><br />

bark. The hatched larvae <strong>the</strong>n feed <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> inner tissue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tree, depriving<br />

it <strong>of</strong> water and nutrients. The ash borer has moved so quickly through<br />

<strong>the</strong> landscape that it will take some time before its natural preda<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

catch up. In <strong>the</strong> meantime, “<strong>the</strong>re will be a lot less ash,” says Smith.<br />

Long-range planning is urgently needed, she says – both <strong>to</strong> diversify<br />

<strong>the</strong> province’s tree s<strong>to</strong>ck and manage <strong>the</strong> enormous costs <strong>of</strong> disposing <strong>of</strong><br />

dead and dying trees. U <strong>of</strong> T has provided funding for two students in <strong>the</strong><br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Forest Conservation program <strong>to</strong> collaborate with <strong>the</strong> Harbord<br />

Village Residents’ Association in down<strong>to</strong>wn Toron<strong>to</strong> on an emerald ash<br />

borer management plan for <strong>the</strong> St. George campus. “We would be naive <strong>to</strong><br />

think this kind <strong>of</strong> epidemic won’t happen again,” says Smith. “We need <strong>to</strong><br />

use this as a <strong>to</strong>ol <strong>to</strong> plan ahead for a more diversified and resilient urban<br />

activism may serve <strong>to</strong> downplay or<br />

even criminalize street protests<br />

and occupations. “It’s like telling<br />

<strong>the</strong> people that you can change<br />

<strong>the</strong> world by tweeting, so why<br />

bo<strong>the</strong>r going out in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> streets”<br />
