Quality; Machinery <strong>and</strong> Equipment Design;<br />

Productivity; Consumer Product Design;<br />

Environmental Performance, <strong>and</strong> Export<br />

Marketing <strong>and</strong> Technological Achievement on<br />

16-17 August 2001 at the Hong Kong<br />

Productivity Centre <strong>and</strong> the Federation of Hong<br />

Kong Industries;<br />

• Visited Macquarie <strong>University</strong>, Sydney,<br />

Australia on 20 August 2001 <strong>and</strong> met with their<br />

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dianne YERBURY, to<br />

discuss with them about student exchange<br />

under <strong>Lingnan</strong>'s international exchange<br />

programme;<br />

• Attended the Pacific Trade <strong>and</strong> Development<br />

(PAFTAD) 27 Conference held at the Australian<br />

National <strong>University</strong>, Canberra, on 20-22 August<br />

2001 in his capacity as a member of the<br />

International Steering Committee;<br />

• Invited by the United Nations Conference on<br />

Trade <strong>and</strong> Development (UNCTAD) to serve<br />

as a resource person on the launching of World<br />

Investment Report (WIR) 2001 on 19 September<br />

2001 in Hong Kong;<br />

• Invited by Taiwan Institute of Economic<br />

Research <strong>and</strong> National Policy Foundation to<br />

participate in a round-table discussion forum<br />

on 'Regional Development <strong>and</strong> Outlook' <strong>and</strong><br />

presented a paper titled "East Asian Economic<br />

Cooperation: China's Viewpoint" on 21<br />

September 2001 in Taipei, Taiwan;<br />

• Invited as Guest Speaker by the Civil Service<br />

Training <strong>and</strong> Development Institute in its<br />

Leadership in Public Sector Programme No 7<br />

<strong>and</strong> delivered a speech titled "The Global Mega<br />

Trends: Implications for HK <strong>and</strong> the Public<br />

Sector" to the senior professionals <strong>and</strong> junior<br />

directorates of the civil service on 25 September<br />

Singapore. A speech entitled "Competitiveness<br />

through People in the 'New Economy' Era:<br />

Policy Options" was delivered;<br />

• Invited by the School of Communication, The<br />

Hong Kong Baptist <strong>University</strong> (HKBU) to<br />

deliver a speech to its Post-graduate students<br />

titled "The Hong Kong Press Council's<br />

Functions: Freedom of Speech Versus Freedom<br />

of the Press" on 9 October 2001 in HKBU's<br />

campus;<br />

• Invited by the Hong Kong International Institute<br />

of Educational Leadership to deliver a speech<br />

on "The Economic <strong>and</strong> Social Consequences of<br />

the ICT Revolution" at its Annual General<br />

Meeting held at Wah Yan College on 17 October<br />

2001;<br />

• Invited by The <strong>University</strong> of Hong Kong Old<br />

Halls Alumni Association to deliver a speech<br />

entitled "The Challenges of the New Economy<br />

<strong>and</strong> New Technologies" at its Annual Dinner<br />

held on 27 October 2001;<br />

• Invited by the Institute of Geology <strong>and</strong><br />

Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences<br />

to deliver a welcoming address at its 5th<br />

International Conference on the East Asian<br />

Environment (CEAPE) held in The <strong>University</strong><br />

of Hong Kong on 29 October 2001 in his<br />

capacity as Honorary Chairman of the<br />

Conference;<br />

• Invited by the World Economic Forum to serve<br />

as a Panel Speaker on "The Future of Hong<br />

Kong" at the East Asia Economic Summit held<br />

on 29-31 October 2001; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Attended the Graduation Ceremony of<br />

Diploma in Business Management (Chinese<br />

Course) jointly organised by Hong Kong<br />

Management Association <strong>and</strong> <strong>Lingnan</strong>, <strong>and</strong><br />

presented the certificates to graduates on<br />

30 October 2001.
