SENIOR MANAGEMENT RETREAT ON 27 OCTOBER 2001
The University's Senior Management Group (SMG) held a retreat on 27 October 2001 to discuss issues on:
(1) Preparation for the 2002 UGC (University Grants Committee) Institutional Visit to the University;
(2) The funding method currently used by the UGC; and
(3) The setting up of an Institutional Advancement Office.
Discussion on issue (1) above was very enthusiastic. Ideas expressed at the Retreat were focused on how to
demonstrate to the UGC in real terms the uniqueness of liberal arts education at Lingnan such as the interdisciplinary
nature of Lingnan's curriculum and research, sectional teaching, and cooperative learning. A Task
Force was set up to make preparation for the UGC visit in September/October 2002.
During the SMG Retreat, the Comptroller explained the funding method currently used by the UGC. The UGC
has adopted a relative rating of 1 to 4 for funding various academic subjects. Rating 1 gets the lowest funding.
All Lingnan's academic programmes belong to rating 1.
With the change of the funding environment of the tertiary education sector, UGC-funded institutions are
actively looking for public support and new sources of funding for their further development. In order to
achieve results, some of them already have developed an Institutional Advancement Office to merge and
coordinate the functions of public relations, fundraising and alumni relations. A presentation on institutional
advancement, which deliberated on contents of those three functions and their interaction, was made at the Retreat.
CAMPUS UPDATE
A NEW INITIATIVE ON STUDENT
EXCHANGE BETWEEN LINGNAN AND
MAINLAND UNIVERSITIES
The University has recently signed agreements with
two leading universities in the Chinese Mainland
on student exchanges following the Vice-
President's visits to Beijing and Shanghai in summer
2001. The two universities are Renmin University
(or People's University) of China in Beijing and
Donghua University ( !) in Shanghai. Both
universities are key institutions which are under
the auspices of the Ministry of Education in Beijing.
It is understood that this is the first ever Student
Exchange Programme signed between a HKSARbased
tertiary institution and Mainland institutions.
So far academic exchanges of institutions have been
mainly in the areas of teaching and research or
staff exchanges. This student-specific exchange
scheme would enable Lingnan undergraduates to
spend one semester in a Mainland institution and
to experience the university life there. Such
experiences would undoubtedly enhance the
employability of Lingnan graduates in future.
Under the agreements, Lingnan will send one to
four students for a one-semester study to each of
the two Mainland universities. Each of the
Mainland universities will send one to two students
to Lingnan for an academic year. Exchange
students will be requested to pay the tuition and
hostel fees of their home institutions only. The
credits gained by students at the universities will
be recognised by both sides. The first batch of the
University's exchange students will be sent to the
two mainland universities in the academic year
2002-2003.
Several key mainland universities have shown great
interests in establishing similar student exchange
programme with Lingnan. It is considered that the
student exchange scheme would promote a better
understanding of the Chinese Mainland and
HKSAR among students from Hong Kong and
Mainland respectively. The University is at present
actively discussing with the prestigious Huazhong
University of Science and Technology ( !
) in Wuhan to sign similar Student Exchange
Agreement. The agreement is expected to be signed
in early 2002.
