The Curriculum Model IB students must choose their two-year programme of study from each of the subject groups represented in the hexagon model, in a combination of at least three and no more than four higher levels and the others at standard level. Languages Languages are offered in Groups 1 and 2. The language programmes are defined as follows: Languages A1: Languages B: Languages A2: Ab initio: Literature programme for the native speakers; Foreign languages programme for students with previous experience of learning the languages; Native or Fluent speakers Foreign language programme for beginners. GROUP 1 ENGLISH A1 – LITERATURE The study of literature, including World Literature, is the main focus of the course. Texts are selected from a Prescribed Booklist published by IBO. The Course Aims: • To encourage a personal appreciation of literature and develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism; • To develop powers of expression, both in oral and written communications, and provide the opportunity of practicing and developing the skills involved in writing and speaking in a variety of styles and situations; • To introduce students to a range of literary works of different periods, genres, styles and contexts; • To broaden the students’ perspective through the study of works from other cultures and languages; • To develop the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of written text; • To promote in students an enjoyment of, and lifelong interest in, literature. Wide reading broadens ideas and extends awareness of the potential and limitations of the written word. Students develop and cultivate the literary mind by studying styles, expression, composition and literary appreciation. They train in techniques of writing clear, balanced prose and prepare for challenging assessments. 6
