COMMEMORATION | NCPC conducts long-range plann<strong>in</strong>g to understand the<br />
commemorative landscape and accommodate future memorials and museums<br />
<strong>in</strong> a manner that enhances the nation’s capital. Research, projects, and outreach<br />
undertaken <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> will guide upcom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiatives to explore new opportunities<br />
and approaches to tell stories important to the nation.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Memorial<br />
Wash<strong>in</strong>gton as Commemoration Study<br />
NCPC and the <strong>National</strong> Park Service (NPS) are<br />
research<strong>in</strong>g new approaches and best practices for<br />
establish<strong>in</strong>g commemoration <strong>in</strong> cities around the<br />
world. The research is <strong>in</strong>tended to place Wash<strong>in</strong>gton’s<br />
practices for establish<strong>in</strong>g commemoration on federal<br />
lands with<strong>in</strong> a comparative context.<br />

Catalogue<br />
NCPC compiled the Commemorative Works<br />
Catalogue, the fi rst-ever comprehensive <strong>in</strong>ventory<br />
of all commemorative works on federal land <strong>in</strong><br />
Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC. Each record <strong>in</strong>cludes the work’s<br />
title, location, a short description of its purpose,<br />
landhold<strong>in</strong>g agency, sponsor, year of authorization,<br />
year of dedication, authoriz<strong>in</strong>g law, and major<br />
themes represented <strong>in</strong> the work. The catalogue is<br />
a fi rst step <strong>in</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g spatial and thematic<br />
patterns for commemorative works.<br />
Interactive Map<br />
Us<strong>in</strong>g data from the catalogue, NCPC produced an<br />
onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>teractive map to help the public locate and<br />
learn about commemorative works <strong>in</strong> the nation’s<br />
capital. The tool allows anyone to view memorials<br />
by theme, and see the full history and signifi cance of<br />
each. Additionally, each entry can <strong>in</strong>clude photos and<br />
comments from the public. Due to public feedback and<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest, additional commemorative works <strong>in</strong> northern<br />
Virg<strong>in</strong>ia and Maryland will be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> a second<br />
release of the map <strong>in</strong> early 2012.
