When address<strong>in</strong>g a person, it is advisable to prefix <strong>the</strong> name with a<br />
'Mr.', ‘Ms.’, 'Mrs.' or 'Miss', or <strong>the</strong> professional title of <strong>the</strong> person<br />
['Doctor' or 'Professor'] unless <strong>the</strong> person asks you to refer to him by<br />
his/her first name.<br />
The nam<strong>in</strong>g conventions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn states of <strong>India</strong> [Andhra<br />
Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala] are different when<br />
compared to o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> country [often broadly referred to as<br />
North <strong>India</strong>, though it also encompasses <strong>the</strong> eastern and western<br />
regions of <strong>the</strong> country].<br />
In North <strong>India</strong>, most people have a family name [e.g., Sharma, Patel,<br />
S<strong>in</strong>gh, etc.], and <strong>the</strong> names are written <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> western style first name<br />
followed by <strong>the</strong> surname. Sometimes, <strong>the</strong>re may also be a middle<br />

Praveen, if <strong>the</strong> relationship is <strong>in</strong>formal.<br />
In contrast, <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn states, men do not have a family name. Instead,<br />
<strong>the</strong> name of one's fa<strong>the</strong>r and/or <strong>the</strong> ancestral village/town is used for<br />
<strong>the</strong> purpose. These are normally abbreviated and prefixed before <strong>the</strong><br />
first name. For <strong>in</strong>stance, a south <strong>India</strong>n name 'Kamundari Ranganthan<br />
Gurumurthy' will be written as 'K. R. Gurumurthy', signify<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong><br />
person's ancestral place is 'Kamundari', fa<strong>the</strong>r's name is 'Ranganathan',<br />
and his first name is 'Gurumurthy'. He will be addressed as Mr.<br />
Gurumurthy--or if <strong>the</strong> relationship is <strong>in</strong>formal, as just Gurumurthy.<br />
It must be mentioned that with time and social mobility, <strong>the</strong> nam<strong>in</strong>g<br />
conventions are also chang<strong>in</strong>g. For <strong>in</strong>stance, many south <strong>India</strong>n<br />
families have started adapt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> north <strong>India</strong>n nam<strong>in</strong>g conventions.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> family name <strong>in</strong> north <strong>India</strong> also denotes <strong>the</strong> person's caste,<br />
and <strong>the</strong>refore, place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> social hierarchy, some liberal-m<strong>in</strong>ded north<br />
<strong>India</strong>ns do not use <strong>the</strong> family name.<br />
Bus<strong>in</strong>ess dress code<br />
In recent years, <strong>the</strong> dress code <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>n bus<strong>in</strong>ess sett<strong>in</strong>gs has<br />
undergone a transformation. Moreover, it also differs widely across<br />

generalization about <strong>the</strong> most appropriate way to dress that will be<br />
valid across <strong>India</strong>. However, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts should assist you <strong>in</strong><br />
