• Respect for age, loyalty to one's family, community or group, and<br />
practice of certa<strong>in</strong> religious rituals are still observed <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>n<br />
work-sett<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong> vary<strong>in</strong>g degrees.<br />
• Women executives, <strong>in</strong> senior positions, are a relatively new<br />
phenomenon <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>India</strong>n bus<strong>in</strong>ess environment. Women will<br />
normally f<strong>in</strong>d people respectful and courteous, but perhaps<br />
uncomfortable <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess situations. Extra efforts may be<br />
needed.<br />
• The government-owned public sector companies are more often<br />
bureaucratic and hierarchical.<br />
• Private sector counterparts and <strong>the</strong> 'new economy' service sector<br />
companies are more egalitarian and flexible than <strong>the</strong> traditional<br />
manufactur<strong>in</strong>g-sector firms.<br />
Gett<strong>in</strong>g started<br />
Foreign jo<strong>in</strong>t ventures and technical collaborations are not new <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>India</strong>n bus<strong>in</strong>ess environment. Therefore, if you are represent<strong>in</strong>g a wellknown<br />
global company, you will f<strong>in</strong>d that, by and large, <strong>India</strong>ns are<br />
comfortable and open to negotiation, and an <strong>in</strong>termediary is not<br />
required to establish one's credentials.<br />
If, however, you are represent<strong>in</strong>g a lesser known country (like <strong>Norway</strong>) or a<br />
small company, it will help to get some referrals from your o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
clients/partners <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>.<br />
<strong>India</strong>n laws and bureaucracy are quite <strong>in</strong>tricate and cumbersome.<br />
Besides <strong>the</strong> statutes of <strong>the</strong> Central government, <strong>the</strong>re are numerous<br />
pieces of legislation which differ considerably across <strong>the</strong> states. It is<br />
advisable to hire an <strong>India</strong>n lawyer/liaison person.<br />
Meet<strong>in</strong>g preparations<br />
It is advisable to schedule your appo<strong>in</strong>tment at least a couple of<br />
months <strong>in</strong> advance. If you are mak<strong>in</strong>g your appo<strong>in</strong>tments before<br />
com<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>India</strong>, do emphasize that you will be <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong> for a short<br />
period of time, if this is <strong>the</strong> case. It is also useful to reconfirm your<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g a few days before <strong>the</strong> agreed upon date.<br />
There is a dist<strong>in</strong>ct difference <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultures of <strong>the</strong> government<br />
departments and bus<strong>in</strong>ess organisations. Compared to a bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
organisation, it is normally more difficult to get an appo<strong>in</strong>tment with<br />
<strong>official</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a government department. Also, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> government<br />
