In 2006, and in honor of Wharton’s 125th anniversary, the Anvil Society was created to
recognize those donors who gave $50,000–99,999. The anvil reflects Joseph Wharton’s
pioneering work in the metals industry and has become a symbol for those individuals
whose commitment to the School has set them apart as leaders and role models for fellow
alumni and future generations of students.
Inaugural Wharton
Venture Awards
This year, the Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs (WEP)
announced the winners of their inaugural Wharton Venture
Award. The Venture Award supports undergraduate juniors,
first-year MBA students, and doctoral candidates, providing
them with a $10,000 monetary award in support of their
ongoing venture. This enables WEP students to pursue the
venture full time over the summer in lieu of a more
traditional internship. A selection committee consisting of
two faculty members and three alumni chose this year’s
recipients. The committee was comprised of Professors Eric
Siegel and Robert Chalfin, and alumni Robert Coneybear,
WG’96, Richard Glabman, W’67, and David
Karlgaard, WG’81.
“We are pleased to provide these awards because they
provide no-strings attached capital but also because they
reflect our broader commitment to student entrepreneurs,”
stated Wharton Professor Raphael (Raffi) Amit, Robert B.
Goergen Professor of Entrepreneurship; Professor of
Management; Academic Director, The Goergen
Entrepreneurial Management Programs and Academic
Director, The Wharton Global Family Alliance. “These
entrepreneurial students are boldly making real what they
have learned at the Wharton School, building ventures,
creating jobs and seeding societal wealth worldwide.”
The 2007 Venture Award recipients were as follows: Jack
Abraham, W’08, iBuy; Adam Erlebacher, WG’08 and
Greg Neichin, WG’08, PlaceVine; Vikram Joshi, WG’08,
Red Ladder Media; Masha Merchant, WG’08, Angiologix;
Blake Sonnek-Schmelz, WG’08, JuceLife; and Nat
