2007 WHARTON ECONOMIC SUMMIT: NEXT MOVES IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY
Befitting the close of Wharton’s year-plus celebration of its 125th
anniversary, the 2007 Economic Summit marked by the largest event
ever to be held in the School’s history.
(L. to R.)
Stan O’Neal, chairman and CEO
of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.,
addressed participants at the
2007 Wharton Economic
Summit’s opening keynote
session.
William L. Mack, W’61, founder
and managing partner, Apollo
Real Estate Advisors, leads one
of the popular real estate panel
discussions.
Staged in Philadelphia in mid-April, the Summit
drew more than 1,400 Wharton alumni and
business leaders from around the world to
address the topic “Next Moves in a Global
Economy.”
Called “an absolute grand slam” by
former dean Patrick T. Harker, the event
culminated in a celebration that began in
January 2006 with the Mumbai Global
Alumni Forum, then circled the globe for 15
months with a 20-city faculty tour.
Surpassing the 2006 Economic Summit in
New York in attendance, the finale event
was a tremendous success, with over 30
panels and sessions that featured key thought
leaders from the academic and business
communities. Such prominent speakers
included Jon M. Huntsman,W’59, H’96;
Jeremy Siegel, Russell E. Palmer Professor of
Finance; Stan O’Neal, chairman and CEO,
Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.; Mike Useem, William
and Jacalyn Egan Professor, professor of
Management, and director, Center for
Leadership and Change Management; Art
Collins, WG’73, chairman and CEO, Medtronic,
Inc.; and Rajat Gupta, senior partner
worldwide, McKinsey & Company.
With panel and session topics ranging from
Keynote Speakers
Huntsman Corporation; Thomas Donaldson, keynote, Wharton’s Mark O. Winkelman Professor of Legal Studies
and Business Ethics
Former Dean Patrick T. Harker, CE’81, GCE’81,
Gr’83, H’87, welcomes participants to the 2007
Economic Summit.
emerging markets and family business to
ethical leadership and risk management, the
global focus of the Summit reflected the
School’s own legacy as an international
institution and as a driver for international
economic growth and opportunity.
The Summit served not only a spectacular
ending to an epic celebration, but also as an
apt close to Dean Harker’s tenure at
Wharton. Dean Harker’s farewell gala dinner
was the culmination of a two-day event of
such scale and depth that it could have only
happened at Wharton. The 2007 Economic
Summit positioned the School well to
welcome the next 125 years.
