“The Gift that Keeps on Giving”
For W. Patrick McMullan III, Wharton is something of a family
tradition. Calling Wharton the “subtle subtext of my life,” he
explains: “My father, my brother and my wife’s nephew all
went to Wharton. My personal and professional life is rife with
Whartonites. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.”
As such, Mr. McMullan was pleased to return the favor to
the School that helped launch his successful career, and led
him to Bear Stearns & Co., Inc. where he is a senior managing
director. Motivated by his belief that the entire Wharton
community is enriched by more bright, committed MBA
candidates, he decided to endow a fellowship. The McMullan
Family MBA Fellowship not only honors the family’s rich
Wharton history but will also enable the School to continue to
attract the world’s most talented students.
Not surprisingly, the faculty and students at Wharton left a
significant impression on Mr. McMullan. He notes, “I
encountered some of the smartest people I had ever met.” His
relationships with these individuals, along with his Wharton
education, helped to guide him in his career and in his life. “The
School has been good to my family and me.”

A Natural Connection
For Jerry Finger, who has spent much of his career in commercial banking, his interest in
Wharton’s Financial Institutions Center was a natural one. Inspired by the knowledge he gained
while at Wharton as well as the lasting relationships he has formed through the School, he
decided to establish the Jerry Finger Endowed Research Fund. Mr.
Finger hopes that this fund will assist the Center “in pursuing and
disseminating research on the constant and dramatic changes in the
banking and financial system.”
Created in 1992, Wharton’s Financial Institutions Center focuses
on research in three key themes: improving productivity and
performance, managing financial risks, and assessing the competitive
structure of markets and institutions. Mr. Finger, a former member of the
School’s Board of Overseers, currently serves on the Center’s Industry
Advisory Board.
Formerly Chairman and CEO of Charter Bancshares and later the vice chairman of Bank of
America, Texas, Mr. Finger is now managing partner of Finger Interests, Ltd., based in Houston,
TX. Mr. Finger recalls one of his most memorable experiences at Wharton in which, upon receiving
top marks for a course on commercial law, the professor said, “You must think you’re pretty smart,
Mr. Finger. Let me remind you, however, that litigation is a luxury that only the very wealthy can
afford.” Mr. Finger still maintains his Wharton connections at both the local and national levels,
noting that he “continues to learn from the younger graduates.”
