Cargill is a very valuable customer
and one of our highest volume
~~~~ GERMAN VISITOR
By George Hardish
Dr. Peter Schutze, Manager of Production Scheduling for D.O. Deutschland,
GMBH, visited the Hazleton Facility during the week of October 26, 1992.
The purpose of Dr. Schutze visit was to become nlore fanliliar with how the
Hazleton Manufacturing Facility uses the ASK system. D.O. Deutschland is now
in the process of preparing to go on line with ASK in the near future. Peter, as we
came to know him, sp nt his week in discussions with George Hardish and Judy
Griesing concerning the aspects of order entry, inventory control and production
scheduling. He also had discussions with Bill Zukovich and Carl Poppalardo,
concerning shop routings, manufacturing processes as well as other aspects of
Manufacturing Engineering. From the day he arrived, beginning with a comprehensive
shop tour of our facility with our Vice-President of Manufacturing, Peter
also had the opportunity to have Jack Skitka's overview and recommendations on
how to prepar for the implementation of the ASK business system.
Dr. Schutze indicated that his visit was most helpful. While in Hazleton, he also
had the opportunity to experience our Halloween holiday which was unknown to
him in Germany. Peter even purchased some Halloween items to take home to his
young daughter with the intention of explaining our Halloween customs to her.
The Hazleton facility certainly enjoyed Peter's visit and welcom d the opportu nity
to work closely with one of OUf associate from D.O. Deutschland.
George Hardis h and Dr. Peter Sd lUlze
CLEAN ROOM ADDED
By Bob "Chico" Mensinger
A new /I clean room" has been bui! t
at the Hazleton Manufacturing facility
to accommodate assembly of Bearings,
e yclo Drives and Disc Decanter
Spindle Assemblies. With a 575 square
foot working and storage area, it is
four times larger than the old room
us d for this purpose. It provides a
dirt free, temperature controlled area
for assembly and storage. High pressure
sodium lighting, an overhead rail
crane, a new induction heater, wooden
top work benches, and a hydraulic
torqu e wrench will enhance our abilitie
to produce precision high speed
rotating assemblies. A team effort
between the Hazleton Shop personnel
and Manufacturing Engineering departments,
in the development of this
new area, has produced a room that is
not only functional but one that we
can be proud to show anyone during a
visit to our manufacturing facility.
"KEEPING UP WITH TECHNOWGY"
By Mark Toka ch
Finally...we can see how good we are doing!!!
In an effort to stay competitive,
Dorr-Oliver recently invested in an
optical comparator. Today m ore
than ever our customers are demanding
QUALITY. DOff-Oliver
has always been synonymous with
quality and we want to insure we
keep that good reputation.
An optical comparator is a device
that can qualify complex geometries
by illuminating and projecting
the part profile onto a screen; the projected image can be compared to a
master gage or by point to pOint coordinate measurement for verification. Basically,
a part is placed on the machine table, a light illuminates the part and projects
a magnified image onto a screen. The controls on the machine allow the operator
to compare or measure the parts dimensions and shape through the use of a gage
standard or the measurement system built into the machine. Features such as
straightness, flatness, roundness, parallelism, perpendicularity and complex geometric
shapes can also be readily checked.
Good people and good equipment are both very important in maintaining a
high level of quality. And quality is what keeps our customers satisfied, which is
what we are all interested in.
HOOK AND BULLET
By Jim Zola
Having survived a bruta l winter in Northeastern Pennsylvania, we can
b gin to day- d ream about fair weather leisure activities ..... . .fishing.
Some of the best fishing trips I had last year were Smallmouth Bass float
trips on the Delaware Ri ver below Easton. The fish were numerous and very
cooperative, although they were mostly in the 14" size range - nothing huge.
At times I had a dozen or so smallies appear out of the current to follow my
lure in a /IV" fo rmation. I caught about 40 on the best day. They especially
liked Ra pala's and na tive minnows about 3" long.
The river is as scenic in the upper Bucks county area, as it is in the Northern
sections, but the water is not as threatening. You~an launch at Moore
Parkway and float seven miles to Frya Run Park or put in at Frya and fl oat 10
miles to Upper Black Eddy. You should have a gas motor in case you want to
do the 17 mile combined trip, it's probably a good idea to bring it along on any
trip in the event that you run late due to great fishing or misjudged d istance.
Fish the faster and heavier currents, specially in the late summer. Don't
be surprised if you hook into an 18" Smallmouth of a huge Walleye.
One of my favorite mind-clearing daydreams is the memory recall of a
particular stretch of water near Lumberville. I picture the boat floating over
an aquarium type setting ofwater along a high vertical redrock shoreline. The
surface water is like glass with a quick moving undercurrent. The blue-green
water colors are crystal clear and I can see at least 20 feet dow n. Unusual
shapes of copper colored boulders below suddenly appear as I floa t over
them, interspersed with normally unseen vegetation. Bursts of sun rays cut
through clouds to highlight the fish swimming near their secret homes below.
I know they are waiting for my lure - AND THE WORLD BE DARNED
WHILE I'M H ERE!!
RETIREE DAY 1993
Our annual retiree day was held on June 25, 1993. Approximately 30 retired people were
welcomed, given a shop and office tour and were treated to lunch at the Top Shelf restaurant.
This is a time we look forward to every year, as it gives us a chance to renew old friendships
and see familiar faces once again.
DIGITAL INFORMATION CENTER
Dorr-Oliver has recently acquired two digital
They run continuously, which allows
all employees to keep up on the latest announcements.
These are much more visible and easier
to read than the old type written announcements.
We also use them to welcome visitors to
our facili ty.
