Crime figures down but concerns remain 

A SIGNIFICANT drop in crime figures has been welcomed on 

the Southside. 

However, there have been calls 

for action to address serious concerns 

regarding one area in Tallaght. 

Dublin South West TD Eamonn 

Maloney (Lab) said the fall in overall 

crime figures, as reported in the 

Irish Examiner, was to be applauded. 

“The report details the fall in assaults, 

robberies, theft, drug and 

public order offences, and organised 

crime,” he said. 

“Any decrease in crime is to be 

welcomed and these figures show 

crime is down virtually across the 

board. 

“I note in particular the 10 per 

cent decrease in assaults and 13 per 

cent fall in organised crime related 

offences.” 

Even though the breakdown of 

official statistics for 2012 confirmed 

Dublin as Ireland’s crime capital, 

with the highest rates for robberies, 

theft, drug, and fraud offences, 

Deputy Maloney pointed out that 

there had been a reduction in recent 

years. 

“I especially welcome a consistent 

reduction in the Dublin region, 

where crime has reduced in the year 

2011-2012 by 3.5 per cent and by

13.5 per cent for the period 2008- 

2012,” he stated. 

"This is testament to the good 

work of our gardai. 

“Every crime is a blow to community 

life and to the lives of individuals, 

and the fall in crime is a 

welcome boost to communities.” 

He added: “I urge people to report 

any crime, no matter how 

small, so that the gardai can maintain 

an accurate picture of crime 

and its effect on our community.” 

However, in one Southside suburb 

there has been a call for an 

emergency summit of relevant 

agencies to address serious local 

tensions. 

Deputy Sean Crowe (SF) called 

for a meeting of all local agencies, 

including the gardai, community 

organisations and TDs, to be convened 

by South Dublin County 

Council to prevent residents in a 

part of Tallaght being terrorised by 

“running gang battles”. 

“A rise in criminality and gangs 

running around at will are angering 

local communities and causing real 

fear for families,” he stated.

YOU could almost hear the sound of a nation 

collectively yawning when the debate on Seanad 

Eireann got underway this month. 

Enda Kenny previously told 

us he was committed to abolishing 

the Seanad and now he’s 

going to make good on his 

promise by holding a referendum 

on the issue. The Minister 

for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, 

Richard Bruton, has been 

appointed Director of Elections 

for Fine Gael’s referendum 

campaign. 

Without being overly cynical, 

for most people this will arguably 

be the most boring 

referendum campaign in the 

history of the State. Even some 

radio show presenters seemed 

mindful of this and were almost 

apologetic to their listeners for 

having to cover the Seanad 

story in such detail. 

Don’t get me wrong – I’m 

fully in favour of political reform 

and there is a clear need 

for proper debate on the issue. 

But we should be careful that 

these reforms are in the best interest 

of democracy and are not 

just populist gestures by the 

Government. 

Let’s also hope that the relentless 

discussions about the 

future of the Upper House 

won’t mask the more immediate 

issues facing ordinary people 

and businesses. 

The implementation of the 

property tax is pretty much a 

fait accompli at this stage due to 

the range of powers afforded to 

the Revenue. And in the next 

few years we’ll be paying for our 

water, pushing families even 

closer to the brink of poverty. 

And what about Fine 

Gael’s promise to end upward 

only rent reviews and ease this 

extraordinary burden on businesses 

Well, that all changed 

when they got into Government. 

The previous Fianna 

Fail/Green Party administration 

had ended the practice of 

upward only clauses being included 

in commercial leases 

signed after February 28, 2010. 

But when the current Government 

came to power, they discovered 

that any legislation to 

retrospectively abolish upward 

only rent agreements could be 

open to a constitutional challenge 

by landlords. 

Meanwhile, business after 

business is collapsing under the 

pressure of unsustainable rents, 

jobs are being lost and the Government 

is picking up the social 

welfare tab. It doesn’t make any 

sense – economically, politically 

or morally. 

If it’s a constitutional challenge 

they fear, could the issue 

of upward only rents possibly 

be dealt with by way of a referendum 

It’s a question worth 

asking. 

Clearly, the outcome here 

would be more beneficial to society 

than the abolition or retention 

of the Seanad.

Two-year-old Gethin saves his mum’s life 

A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy has been hailed a hero after 

saving his mum’s life by continuously beeping the horn 

of her car after she took ill on a busy Dublin road. 

The drama unfolded at 

around 3pm on May 17 when 

Julia Baker (34), an insulin dependent 

diabetic, was driving 

by Pat O’Rourke 

from her home to a local supermarket. 

As a result of her condition, 

Mrs Baker has to take insulin to 

control her blood glucose levels. 

“I monitor my levels frequently 

and before I set out on 

my journey they were fine,” she 

told Southside People. 

“Having driven down the 

road for 10 minutes and not feeling 

well, I pulled over on to the 

side of the road opposite Kilbarrack 

Fire Station and switched 

off the engine. 

“I couldn’t find anything to 

eat in the car, despite there being 

plenty there, and I was getting 

more and more confused.” 

Mrs Baker’s only child, 

Gethin, had been sitting in his 

car seat while his mother was 

drifting into unconsciousness. 

“He is a very strong boy and 

managed to get himself out of 

the car seat,” explained Mrs 

Baker. “It’s not something he 

would ever do, especially when 

the car is in motion. 

“Then he climbed into the 

driver’s seat and sat on my lap. 

At first he was trying to shake 

me and I remember him pulling 

at my leg. As I was becoming 

more and more unwell, he 

started banging on the window.” 

Mrs Baker then started to 

lapse into unconsciousness. Un-

known to her at the time, 

Gethin was beeping on the horn 

in a desperate bid to attract attention. 

According to Mrs Baker, a 

nearby resident, whom she believes 

was mowing his lawn, 

came over to the car, saw that 

she was in trouble and alerted 

“He’s only two years and 

four-months-old and he managed 

to call for help and save 

my life. I am so proud of him.” 

Ms Baker said that when 

she eventually came round, she 

was shocked to see Gethin in 

the arms of a Garda. 

“I was unconscious for

strange with people he doesn’t 

know, but the Garda did a fantastic 

job in keeping him very 

calm throughout my ordeal.

hero of the hour, Gethin. 

“It was a very dangerous 

situation and I could have 

died if I hadn’t been given 

sugar at the critical point,” 

she added. 

Ms Baker and her husband 

Robert are originally from Bristol 

and Wales respectively. 

They moved to Dublin four 

years ago when Robert took a 

job here.

Minister launches missing children’s hotline 

A NEW hotline for missing children was launched recently 

by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, 

Frances Fitzgerald. 

The 116000 hotline was established 

to provide support and guidance 

to children and their families as 

part of an EU initiative. 

It will be run by the Irish Society 

for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children 

(ISPCC) on a 24/7 basis with financial 

support from the Department 

of Children and Youth Affairs and the 

EU. 

Minister Fitzgerald said she was 

delighted to officially launch the 

116000 Hotline for Missing Children 

in Ireland. 

“This service provides an important 

support for children missing from 

home and for their families,” she said. 

“I wish to commend the commitment 

and interest shown by the ISPCC in 

seeking to progress provision of this 

hotline.” 

Under EU telecoms rules agreed 

in 2009, the 116000 number is reserved 

in all member states for a missing 

children hotline. 

In 2011 Minister Fitzgerald established 

a project team that included 

representatives of the Department of 

Children and Youth Affairs, the Department 

of Justice and Equality, 

ComReg and the gardai to oversee the 

establishment of the hotline. 

Comreg then allocated the 116000 

number to the ISPCC following an examination 

of the issues involved in 

conjunction with the project team. 

Minister Fitzgerald added: “We 

must acknowledge that for those children 

who are missing, even for just 

one day, there is a family member or 

significant other who is worried, 

frightened and distressed. 

“Also, there is a child out there 

feeling scared and alone because they 

are either in danger or have left their 

home. The 116000 Hotline is now 

available as an extra resource to these 

families and children. It will help provide 

the emotional support and information 

needed during such a difficult 

time.”


Boyzone star fronts new 

campaign to beat bullying 

FORMER Boyband star Keith Duffy is calling on primary 

schools across Dublin to join him in helping a new 

campaign to beat bullying.

as he urged schools to join the

www.autismirelandantibullying.ie. 

They can also collect old 

phones for recycling over the 

summer, and then trade these 

for an educational pack that 

teaches kids how to recognise, 

deal with and stop bullying. 

Father-of-two Keith 

warned that children who are 

being bullied often feel helpless. 

“Victims of bullying can 

feel trapped and that they can’t 

do anything about it,” he said. 

“They’re terrified that if they 

tell anyone the bullying will get 

worse. But these action packs 

teach children how and where 

to get the help they need to 

stop the bullies for good.” 

Using specially created 

software, the action packs 

teach children how to identify 

common bullying scenarios 

and what to do if they ever fall 

victim to bullies. 

Dublin schools can join online 

when they reopen in Sep- 

tember to register for the 

2013/14 campaign. 

And although it’s run by 

Irish Autism Action, Keith said 

the campaign is for all children. 

“The horrible fact is that 

anyone can be bullied,” he 

added. “A recent ISPCC report 

found 23 per cent of nine to 16 

year-olds reported being bullied, 

either online or face to 

face. 

“That’s nearly a quarter of 

all the children in Ireland and 

it’s a horrific figure. 

“Bullies often get away with 

what they do because their victims 

just don’t know how to 

make it stop. Hopefully these 

action packs will give children 

the tools they need to speak out 

and stop bullies for good.” 

According to Keith the summer 

is a great time to get out 

there and start collecting 

phones. 

“Don’t forget, you can still 

sign up in September, and by 

then you should be well on the 

way to earning your action 

pack,” he stated. 

The campaign is run in association 

with Irish company 

Swapkit, a forerunner in supporting 

Irish Autism through its 

recycling campaigns.

City’s water mains get replaced 

WORK on replacing another 19km of old and leaking 

water mains in Dublin City has got underway. 

The next phase of the Dublin Region Water Mains Rehabilitation 

Project will take place in the Gardiner Street, Camden Street 

Upper, Clanwilliam Place, Sean Moore Road, Terenure Road 

North, Christchurch Place and Crumlin Cross areas. 

The project, managed by Dublin City Council, has already replaced 

140km of water mains as part of an overall integrated investment 

programme across the city. 

“The benefits of this new contract will include a further reduction 

in leakage from pipes, improved water pressure to homes and 

businesses, and improved levels of service and security of supply,” 

said Tom Leahy of Dublin City Council.

Should it stay or should it go 

● WET, WET, WET: The first two division Underwater Hockey tournament to be held in Ireland will 

take place in the National Aquatic Centre on June 22. The Dublin Underwater Hockey team, in 

conjunction with ‘The Gathering’, will welcome 10 teams from The Netherlands, Great Britain, 

Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and Ireland’s second team, Cork. 

Minister launches booklet for jobless 

The Minister for Social Protection, 

Joan Burton, has launched the 20th edition 

of the ‘Working for Work’ booklet, 

produced by the Irish National 

Organisation of the Unemployed 

(INOU). 

The booklet, which is an annual publication, 

brings together a wide range of information 

on supports available for unemployed 

people seeking to return to work, education or 

training. 

This booklet is produced with financial 

support from the Department of Social Protection 

and the Department of Education and 

Skills. Some e244,000 is being provided this 

year to the INOU towards the cost of maintaining 

its welfare rights and information unit, 

administration, utilities and the overhead costs 

associated with the production of the booklet. 

Speaking at the launch last Friday, Minister 

Burton stated: “The INOU is an important 

partner in the provision of accurate, independent, 

comprehensive and user friendly information 

to customers of the Department of Social 

Protection including jobseekers and to those 

working within communities to address social 

exclusion.”

HIV continues to rise 

HIV has continued to rise in Ireland, new figures from the Dublin 

AIDS Alliance (DAA) show. 

On Irish AIDS Day (June 15), 

the DAA revealed that there were 

341 new HIV diagnoses in Ireland in 

2012, a seven per cent increase on 

2011 figures. 

Susan Donlon, Prevention Education 

and Training Coordinator, 

said the highest proportion of new 

HIV diagnoses was among men having 

sex with men (MSM). 

“This is the highest number of 

new HIV diagnoses ever recorded 

for MSM in Ireland,” she said. “We 

have seen a 180 per cent increase in 

HIV diagnoses among MSM over 

the past 10 years (from 76 in 2003 to 

166 in 2012), and significantly, more 

than one third (36 per cent) of MSM 

newly diagnosed in 2012 were aged 

younger than 30 years.” 

The 2012 data is contained in the 

latest HSE Health Protection Surveillance 

Centre (HPSC) HIV & 

AIDS report that shows how a total 

of 6,629 people have been newly diagnosed 

with HIV in Ireland since 

the early 1980s to the end of 2012. 

It revealed that sex between men 

is the predominant mode of HIV 

transmission in Ireland and MSM is 

the most affected population group 

by HIV in Ireland. 

“Targeted initiatives such as the 

Man2Man programme are fundamental 

to reaching population 

groups most at risk of HIV infection,” 

Ms Donlon added. “However, 

if we are to see any reduction in the 

incidence of new infections, consistent 

messages over a sustained period 

of time are required and must 

be resourced.” 

Ireland’s first National Sexual 

Health Strategy is currently being 

developed to promote the integration 

of HIV prevention and health 

services within a broader sexual 

health context.

Summer recycling for Dublin 

TWO free recycling events are taking place in Dublin 

in the coming weeks.

Southsider Aidan 

becomes an unlikely 

Aussie sports star 

A SOUTHSIDER who was forced to emigrate to Australia 

two years ago has become an unlikely success 

story in his adopted country. 


Aidan Cleary (29) was a 

committed hurling player all 

his life, playing for UCD while 

studying there from 2001-2005 

before making the move to Kilmacud 

Crokes where he played 

from 2009 – 2010. 

Off the field Aidan excelled 

as an engineer. However, like so 

many others during the economic 

downturn, the recession 

caught up with him and not 

only did he have to say goodbye 

to a job that he loved, but also 

to his Sandyford home, family 

and friends. 

Swapped 

Aidan left Ireland on a oneway 

ticket with his recently 

married wife to commence a 

new life on the other side of the 

world. 

However, the luck of the 

Irish was with him when the 

company he eventually got a 

job with participated in the 

local Corporate Games in Melbourne’s 

Docklands. 

Aidan swapped his hurl for 

a paddle, joined the Dragon 

Boat Team and took to this relatively 

unknown sport like a 

duck to water. 

He was hooked and soon 

he joined the Melbourne 

Flames Dragon Boat Club. 

Before long this newbie was 

not only paddling on the Melbourne 

Flames Premier Team 

but excelled to be selected for 

the Victorian State Team. 

But he didn’t want to stop 

there. A year after his first taste 

of the sport, and he is now 

preparing for the Australian 

National Team Trials. 

If successful, a place on the 

Auroras squad will be his reward 

with the opportunity to 

compete in the World Championships, 

which are to be held in 

Szeged, Hungary at the end of 

July this year. 

A place on the Auroras Premier 

Squad requires a long 

three-day camp in Canberra 

where participants are subjected 

to grueling fitness tests 

and water based speed tests as

of 38 degrees. 

Not the best conditions for 

an Irishman and the first day 

left Aidan drained despite personal 

bests in the bench press 

and sit-ups fitness tests. 

However, his spirits were 

lifted that evening as the 

coaches held a video analyses 

session, and he was singled out 

and praised for his technique. 

After camp, he returned to 

Melbourne with an anxious 

wait before he learned that he’d 

won a coveted place on the 

Australian National Dragon 

Boat Team. 

Impending 

In April, Aidan attended 

the National Dragon Boat 

Championships in Penrith, 

Sydney, with his club team, 

Melbourne Flames, and his 

State Team, Victoria. Contrary 

to what most people expected, 

his teams won a medal in every 

event entered and were Australian 

Champions. 

Aidan and a selection of 

the Auroras recently returned 

from Singapore where they 

competed in the Dragon Boat 

Singapore (DBS) Marina Bay 

Regatta in the hopes of raising 

funds for their impending trip 

to Hungary. 

Although they were unsuccessful 

in winning the cash 

prizes, they found the experience 

invaluable. They learnt 

just how high the bar is when 

competing at an international 

level. 

In Melbourne, fundraising 

will also commence to ensure 

that Aidan’s hard work so far 

will not be in vain, as each 

competitor has to pay for this 

privilege. 

Out of pocket expenses include 

uniform, flights, accommodation, 

food, training 

camps, and entry fees, which 

are all incurred by individual 

paddlers. 

At this stage Aidan doesn’t 

even own a paddle, which is obviously 

high on the priority list. 

However, a Facebook page 

has been set up to keep friends, 

family, and followers all over 

the world up-to-date on Aidan’s 

training and fundraising 

progress.

Kia Sorento leads the way

THE Sportage is Kia’s bestseller, but the Korean manufacturer’s 

flagship motor is the Sorento.

This is the third version of 

the Sorento, which was first introduced 

to Ireland 11 years 

ago. 

Back in 2002 the Sorento 

proved to be an important 

milestone for Kia as they challenged 

many established 

brands and it certainly helped 

begin the process of changing 

the Irish public’s perception 

about Kia. 

Kia says the Sorento is 

named after the Italian city of 

the same name, but somewhere 

along the way one ‘r’ got 

dropped. There’s nothing else 

missing, however. There is 

plenty of space in this massive 

seven-seater. Truth be told I 

didn’t have any reason to use 

the small third row of seats, so 

the back end was used for carrying 

various items. 

The days of big families are 

almost gone, but if you were in 

charge of an underage soccer 

team and yourself and your assistant 

both owned a Sorento, 

you could then look after your 

own team’s transport requirements. 

No doubt there would be a 

mad rush for the two small 

seats at the back, but you could 

always increase the weekly 

subs to help pay for the SUVs 

This new version is powered 

by an economical 2.2 litre 

diesel, which gives you 194- 

brake horsepower and plenty 

of towing power. The main external 

changes are at the front 

which now has attractive LED 

lights and that familiar ‘tiger 

nose’ grille. It’s a powerful 

motor and all versions include 

items like electronic stability 

control and hill-start assist as 

standard. 

The new model is very 

slightly lower than the old one, 

but you will hardly notice 

10mm and consequently the 

views are still spectacular from 

the high driving position. 

It’s really impressive on the 

road and handles well, but 

driving such a powerful motor, 

you will need to mind your 

speed on smaller winding 

roads or you will be experience 

‘off road’ conditions. I drove a 

six-speed manual, but automatic 

is available. 

In the cabin black was the 

dominant colour. The controls 

on the dash were well laid out 

and easy to use and if the radio 

controls are user friendly then

happy with the Sorento which 

had two decent sized buttons

Kia gain an even stronger 

foothold in the Irish market.

Fairco’s first 

at Bloom 

A FINGAL based company 

achieved a design first at this 

year’s Bloom festival. 

Fairco Windows and Doors brought their 

Hampton Dream Home interiors to the nation’s 

favourite gardening show and became the first interior 

design stand to appear at the event. 

“Bloom had never considered having an interiors 

stand until we approached them,” said Fairco’s 

Jim Toal. 

“The reaction was fantastic, people were surprised 

and delighted to see us there with our partners 

Ventura and Domino Design.” 

Jim’s company, based at the Old Airport Road 

in Santry, has pioneered high-quality Hamptons 

timber-look windows in Ireland. 

Their display at Bloom included a kitchen and 

living room in the exclusive US Hamptons style, 

complete with Fairco’s sash windows and double 

glass patio doors. 

The living area included a bespoke wall panelled 

bookcase and a remote controlled sash window 

with an in-built bench seating area. 

“We showed people what could be done providing 

a complete Hamptons look including fitted 

kitchen and interior designed living area plus windows 

and doors,” Jim said. 

“It’s the first time such an interior has been 

created at Bloom but it won’t be the last. The organisers 

are looking forward to having us back for 

next year’s show.” 

At its Santry base, Fairco hosts Ireland’s largest 

indoor showhouse and it’s completely encased in 

glass.

‘Open’ your eyes at Carton House 

THE countdown is on for the most anticipated sporting events of the 

summer, the 2013 Irish Open. The famous Irish golf tournament will 

take place from June 27 to June 30 at Carton House in Maynooth, Co 

Kildare – when the luxury resort will be transformed with festivities 

on and off the golf course. 

Carton House has welcomed guests 

such as Princess Grace of Monaco, 

Queen Victoria, Marianne Faithful and 

Peter Sellers throughout the years, and 

is worth a visit on its own merits. 

It is also home to the Golfing Union 

of Ireland and was the training camp of 

the Irish rugby ream and the British and 

Irish Lions ahead of their 2013 summer

than blessed over the last decade with 

super-talented golfing superstars, and 

they will all play a part at this flagship 

event.

It is one thing to support these players 

from the comfort of your armchair 

as they stroll the fairways of St Andrews 

or Augusta, but to actually see them up 

close and personal is a different story.

progress of a tournament, but attending 

a top-class event such as this just can’t 

be beaten. 

Instead of sitting in your comfy armchair 

at 1am watching from afar you can 

get a ringside seat alongside these golfing 

goliaths, breathing in the same air 

and absorbing the same tension as they 

stand mere yards away. 

There is also a fantastic grandstand 

and big screen being erected around the 

drop-dead gorgeous par-3 17th hole, 

which has the potential to be a cardwrecker 

– or, indeed, a kingmaker. It is 

one of the prettiest holes in Irish golf 

and I can think of no better place to take 

a pew, relax and watch as the action unfolds 

before the treacherous 18th settles 

proceedings.

no more than five minutes’ walk from 

where the action takes place. The tented 

village will offer you plenty of refreshments 

(and seats for any tired legs) so 

there is plenty to keep you occupied. 

All in all, it’s a great day – or couple 

of days – out, and whether it’s rain, hail 

or shine you are sure to enjoy your experience 

rubbing shoulders with golf’s 

crème de la crème. 

After all, that’s just par for the

control of cemeteries within its administrative area, 

pursuant to the Local Government Act 2001.
