In the pages that follow, you will read the names of donors, study the list of endowment funds that support the school,
review the financial statement for the fiscal year, and examine the results that combined to make the 2007-08 school
year another remarkable year in the giving history of The Westminster Schools. Overall, the school raised $17.2 million
in cash from gifts directed for current operations through annual giving (now known as Th e West m i nst er Fu n d), funds
credited to capital projects, and dollars added to our endowment. This is a magnificent achievement and I hope you will
share in my sense of pride and accomplishment.
Our $100 million comprehensive campaign, Teaching for Tomorrow, has just completed the second year of its “public phase,”
and I could not be more thrilled with its progress. To date, we have raised $71.2 million toward our campaign objectives
by June 2010. These gifts are already having an impact on the school by enabling us to raise faculty salaries, provide
more opportunities for faculty to work on advanced degrees, address the question of higher demand for financial aid,
and offer opportunities for travel/study abroad for students and faculty.
Annual giving plays a key role in Teaching for Tomorrow, as it aims to fulfill 17.8 percent of the $100 million goal. This year,
annual giving experienced record- breaking success under the leadership of Mike Egan ’74 as the school received $3.3
million to support the annual operating budget.
The overall success of 2007-08 annual giving is due in large part to the numerous volunteers who worked diligently to
generate this amazing level of support. Our alumni, led by Bruce Durkee ’72, set all-time records in giving. Frank and
Amelia Bennett, our Parent Fund Chairs, led a wonderfully talented, energetic, and dedicated team of volunteers. As
significant, Reid ’79 and Stacy Stormont ’79 Freeman, Past Parent Chairs, and Anne and David Boyd and Charlie and
Harriet Shaffer, Grandparent Co-Chairs, raised impressive totals.
It is through these generous gifts from our constituents that we are able to provide our students with excellent resources
through which they can not only hone their academic skills, but also their extracurricular passions. One such resource
is W.I.S.E, Westminster’s Institute for Science Education, which has experienced significant growth since its inception a
year ago. The Institute provides Westminster’s students with an entirely new perspective through which to view science.
In particular, it has given students advanced opportunities to study robotics through the newly established elementary,
junior high, and high school teams. These unique opportunities are made possible by the ongoing support of the
Westminster community.
As I have stated in the past, our commitment to the whole child remains strong and vibrant. Your ongoing generosity
enables us to support our students in ways that will prepare them solidly as they continue beyond their time at
Westminster. Thank you for all you do in allowing us to provide a one-of-a-kind educational experience for our students,
and to continue offering standards of excellence and leadership in education on a national level.
