People and Culture<br />

The People and Culture team is responsible<br />

for developing and implementing strategies<br />

relating to people management, training and<br />

career development, remuneration and cultural<br />

change initiatives. The team is also responsible<br />

for setting leadership direction, and maintaining<br />

standards and process consistency across<br />

<strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> through enhancing and<br />

implementing internal processes and policies.<br />

People and Culture’s core strategy is to ensure that<br />

<strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> employs talented and motivated people.<br />

In <strong>2010</strong>/11, the team’s key focus was to continue delivering<br />

relevant and effective training solutions and change<br />

initiatives to a geographically and culturally<br />

diverse organisation.<br />

In accordance with section 74 of the Occupational Health<br />

and Safety (Commonwealth Employment) Act 1991,<br />

<strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> aims to provide a workplace that is,<br />

as far as reasonably practicable, safe and healthy for<br />

employees, contractors and visitors, without risk to the<br />

environment, and is compliant with relevant legislation,<br />

standards and codes of practice. Occupational health<br />

and safety is managed by an occupational health and<br />

safety committee that operates under Health and Safety<br />

Management Arrangements (HSMAs). These arrangements<br />

identify, analyse, assess, control and monitor the<br />

occupational health- and safety-related risks involved in<br />

<strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> activities, with the aim of protecting and<br />

developing the organisation’s key assets, including<br />

its reputation, people, finances, infrastructure and<br />

intellectual property.<br />

Ergonomic assessments of the workplace are conducted by<br />

qualified occupational therapists on a regular basis.<br />

A team of trained first aid support persons assists with the<br />

proactive management of incidents or injuries and timely<br />

and efficient reporting.<br />

<strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> has rigorous emergency evacuation<br />

procedures and regularly conducts fire drills and<br />

fire warden training in conjunction with building<br />

management. Fire wardens are replaced promptly when<br />

vacancies occur.<br />

No claims for workers compensation were received or<br />

lost-time injuries reported in <strong>2010</strong>/11.<br />

Highlights and results<br />

• Of the 214 people employed as at 30 June <strong>2011</strong>, 100<br />

were employed overseas; 72 per cent were female; and<br />

56 per cent of senior management roles and 38 per cent<br />

of executive roles were held by women.<br />

• Maintained generally positive strategic key<br />

The Staff Engagement Index was 69.1 per cent<br />

Voluntary turnover for <strong>2010</strong>/11 was 11.7 per cent,<br />

3 per cent lower than in 2009/10.<br />

• Ensured <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>’s employment policies,<br />

procedures and practices complied with the<br />

requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety<br />

Act 1991, Disability Discrimination Act 1992, Racial<br />

Discrimination Act 1975 and Sex Discrimination<br />

Act 1984.<br />

• Completed a new Enterprise Agreement for<br />

<strong>Australia</strong>-based staff in bands 1 to 4 with an 83 per cent<br />

positive vote; 186 staff were employed under this new<br />

agreement. Thirty staff were employed on common<br />

law contracts.<br />

• Launched a new employment brand – There’s Nothing<br />

Like Working at <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> – including new<br />

corporate behaviours and competency frameworks, and a<br />

recognition and reward program.<br />

• Developed a change management program to support<br />

the new organisational structure and 2020 <strong>Tourism</strong><br />

Industry Potential strategy.<br />

• There were no industrial disputes during the year.<br />
