• What are the actual conditions <strong>of</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g fixed assets like <strong>of</strong>fice equipment, mach<strong>in</strong>ery,<br />
vehicles and the like Do employees, managers and supervisors demonstrate good<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and cleanl<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> company property<br />
There is so much more to ask, but this is a brief list designed to give you a start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t from which to<br />
beg<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> the venture <strong>in</strong> which you are about to <strong>in</strong>vest.<br />
You will want to exam<strong>in</strong>e these responses. It is a detailed matter requir<strong>in</strong>g a significant explanation. Get<br />
help assess<strong>in</strong>g them from your SBDC coach.<br />
Buy<strong>in</strong>g a Franchise<br />
Many small bus<strong>in</strong>ess owners have m<strong>in</strong>imized their risks by <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a franchise. Franchis<strong>in</strong>g is a plan<br />
<strong>of</strong> distribution under which an <strong>in</strong>dividually-owned bus<strong>in</strong>ess is operated as a part <strong>of</strong> a large cha<strong>in</strong>. The<br />
products and services <strong>of</strong>fered are standardized and the company (franchiser) gives the <strong>in</strong>dividual dealer<br />
(franchisee) the right to market the franchiser’s products or services and to use the franchiser’s trade<br />
name, trademarks, reputation and way <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
You may wish to explore some <strong>of</strong> the advantages <strong>of</strong> franchise ownership:<br />
1. Start<strong>in</strong>g your own bus<strong>in</strong>ess under a name and trademark already accepted by the public.<br />
2. Possibly receiv<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and management assistance from the people who are<br />
experienced <strong>in</strong> your type <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
3. Possibly receiv<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance from the franchiser.<br />
4. Possibly purchas<strong>in</strong>g equipment, products and supplies as well as advertis<strong>in</strong>g materials.<br />
You should also look at some <strong>of</strong> the disadvantages:<br />
1. You cannot make all <strong>of</strong> the rules; you lose the freedom to be your own boss and to make<br />
most <strong>of</strong> the decisions.<br />
2. The franchiser usually charges a royalty on a percentage <strong>of</strong> your gross sales.<br />
3. The franchiser does not share your losses.<br />
4. You may be restricted <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g pric<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g new items and dropp<strong>in</strong>g unpr<strong>of</strong>itable<br />
