Some local and regional development organizations <strong>of</strong>fer f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance to small bus<strong>in</strong>esses,<br />
particularly if the operation will result <strong>in</strong> job creation, retention or revitalization <strong>of</strong> the community.<br />
Additionally, county and local governments may <strong>of</strong>fer loan programs for bus<strong>in</strong>ess owners. Contact your<br />
local Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce or government <strong>of</strong>fices for <strong>in</strong>formation on the scope <strong>of</strong> services available <strong>in</strong><br />
your community.<br />
The Small <strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small <strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> Technology Transfer<br />
(STTR) programs are federal <strong>in</strong>itiatives that provide over $1 billion <strong>in</strong> research and development grants<br />
and contracts each year to small bus<strong>in</strong>esses to develop new products and services based on advanced<br />
technologies. These programs provide excellent opportunities to nurture the development <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>in</strong> <strong>West</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia.<br />
The SBDC serves as the centralized source for <strong>in</strong>formation and technical assistance regard<strong>in</strong>g the SBIR/<br />
STTR program for <strong>West</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia-based small technology bus<strong>in</strong>esses and entrepreneurs.<br />
In an effort to propel technologies, teams and companies that have a proven track record and a<br />
technology or <strong>in</strong>novation with a high degree <strong>of</strong> potential, the SBDC has <strong>in</strong>itiated an Award Match<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Program <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the federal SBIR and STTR efforts. If a <strong>West</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia-based small bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
has been successful at Phase I or Phase II the SBDC may be able to match a percentage <strong>of</strong> the award. To<br />

help plann<strong>in</strong>g how to start or improve your bus<strong>in</strong>ess and <strong>in</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g Small <strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrationbacked<br />
small bus<strong>in</strong>ess loans.<br />
Most federal grants are awarded to organizations plann<strong>in</strong>g major projects <strong>of</strong> benefit to their community.<br />
For example, a neighborhood street pav<strong>in</strong>g project; a statewide program to retra<strong>in</strong> displaced workers; or<br />
a project to attract new bus<strong>in</strong>esses to a depressed downtown area.<br />
