NEWS FROM THE
VICE DISTRICT
GOVERNOR:
FRANCIS BOGNUDA
Fellow Lions:
Time flies when you are
having fun! By the time
you read this, we (Norma
and I), will have been to San
Diego for another Council of Governor’s meeting.
They are very interesting, providing lots of
information and training as well as fun. Talking
about training, PDGs Bill Newyear and Pat
Dimond will be having the annual Leadership
Training at Harris Ranch January 17-19, 2009. If
you are interested, you should call DG Pat CG or
myself because it is limited seating. Anyone
seeking good information about leadership should
attend.
Also, we traveled to 4-C5 for a District Meeting
with VDG Viviann Cline-Shinn who visited our
District Meeting in Ceres in August. Their meeting
was quite a bit different and had informational
forums. Governor Cathy Garcia, who was our
district guest at the convention in Lake Tahoe said
to say “Hi” to all of our Lions and to thank them for
a great time.
I have spent time traveling with DG Pat Casey-
Gillum in the last two months. What a good time
we have had meeting new Lions along the way. It
is even better to learn about their projects that they
do to help their communities. We always like to
see newly inducted members in clubs. Clubs are
moving forward now with new members and I
hope it will continue toward the positive side this
year. If any club needs a MERLO presentation at
their club or Zone meeting, please call me and I
will set it up.
Would you like to make a difference in the life of a
Lion You could call or visit someone who has not
been to a meeting for awhile, or they may just
need to be cheered up and asked to come back.
Would you like to make a difference in your club
You could invite a guest and hopefully he or she
may become a member.
Would you like to make a difference in your
community You could create a new project.
Remember, only YOU can make a difference.
Until the next time or on Nov 7-8 at the District
Meeting when the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
shows up in Sierra Oakhurst. Have Fun.●
●CONGRATULATIONS TO PDG
PAT DIMOND on her selection to the
Global Membership Team (GMT) ●
The GMT consists of 41 Lions through-out the world
appointed by International President Al Brandel for a
three year term. The GMT members are to follow up
with DGs and District MERL teams after reviewing
quarterly reports from LCI and where necessary
provide motivation, training, and/or suggestions
regarding LCI initiatives to achieve the desired
member results. We are to provide feedback on
district membership activities to the GMT Chair, the
International President and the LCI Membership
Development Committee.
We are to work with the Multiple District councils to
develop a MD three-year membership plan, assist
with membership related training, offer guidance and
assistance as needed.
I have been assigned the MDs of Oregon/Idaho, CA,
Nevada and Hawaii. (Tough duty but someone has to
do it! ED) It is a very exciting opportunity to work
with Lion Leaders providing for Membership Growth
and Retention. Please let me know if I may be of
assistance to any of our clubs in working with our
MERLO Team.
Our District Membership Report for July-September
shows 60 new members and 71 dropped members
with a net loss of 11. I know we can get our District
back to a positive count. Let’s work together to make
the next report show our positive growth! ●
DOCTOR STORY:
I was performing a complete
physical, including
the visual acuity test. I
placed the patient 20 feet
from the chart and began,
“Cover your right eye
with your hand.” He read
the 20/20 line perfectly.
“Now your left.” Again,
a flawless read.
“Now both,” I requested. There was silence. He
couldn’t even read the large E on the top line. I
turned and discovered that he had done exactly what I
had asked; he was standing there with both his eyes
covered.
I was laughing too hard to finish the exam.
Well as you can see I have
learned how to put photos
not get too carried away. It
is like a new toy! However it
I get to take the 3 rd class of the series on computers
that I started last quarter, at the end of this
month. Looking forward to it.
Am still looking for more information from the
clubs – can be newsletters, or activity reports.
Also if you have an activity to report try to get it in
as early as you can to get it on the calendar. If
you have digital pictures to share with the district,
please send those. I can’t promise to print them.
IN MEMORIAM – SAXON DOWNS, PDG
08/28/1914 – 09/04/2008
After a full life of laughter and love, Saxon Downs passed
away peacefully at Bethel Assisted Living, Modesto. Born
in Ysleta, Texas, he moved to Modesto in 1946 and
became a Lion the following year in Modesto Lions. He
was a partner with Lewis Franklin, Sr. at Franklin and
Downs Funeral Home and continued his partnership with
Lewis Franklin, Jr. Downs, a World War II veteran, married
the love of his life, Merle, in 1942 before going off to war in
the South Pacific, serving in the US Navy with the US
Marine Corps. Besides Lions, he was a longtime member
of the Masonic Order. He is survived by his wife, four
children, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
Sax will always be known for his ready smile and laughter,
a true loss for the Modesto Lions Club. He always made
the members and guests feel welcome at their meetings
and always had a good story to tell. He was the most
senior living PDG for our district 1958 – 59. PDG Elmer
Winger and he were instrumental in getting the band shell
“MAN’S BEST
FRIEND” AS A
WORKING DOG
By PDG Don Allen
2 nd VP, LPCCI
Jay Huston was injured in a parachute
malfunction while in the US Army. Today his CCI
Service Dog, Timo, helps him get out of bed,
picks up things from the floor, opening doors, and
many other tasks. Jacob was born with
osteogenesis imperfecta, a brittle bone disease
that makes his body extremely fragile. As a ten
year old, Jacob received his Skilled Companion
Dog, Nash, who has made Jacob much more
independent. The best part for Jacob is that
people pay attention to Nash, not his wheelchair.
Dog’s early relationship to man was probably one
of a quick meal of garbage from man’s campground.
Man welcomed the dogs because they
cleaned up the campsite. From those early years
dogs have been paying close attention to man.
Somewhere I read that dogs know more about us
than we know about them. Dogs also display a
strong desire to please their master. In the
morning when I head down the hall Patches, my
dog, heads to the front door because she knows it
is time to fetch the paper and that means she will
get a Milk bone snack. After breakfast if I just
look like I might be headed to the back door,
there she is ready to go check on the chickens
and maybe to the neighbor’s coi pond, to feed the
fish.
Canine companions for Independence (CCI) was
founded in 1975 to take advantage of dog’s desire
to please and learn, assisting those with
disabilities. Lions have been supporting CCI
since the early years and formally since the
founding of Lions Project for Canine Companions
for Independence (LPCCI) in 1983. LPCCI
recently celebrated its 25 anniversary. CCI
provides Service Dogs for those with disabilities
who can be responsible for the dog, and Skilled
Companion Dogs for those who need a partner to
be responsible for the dog, and Hearing Dogs for
those with hearing problems. They also train
Facility Dogs to visit those confined in medical
facilities.
LPCCI supports CCI in many ways. LPCCI offers
many opportunities for clubs and individuals to
donate money. Lions can also help by raising or
finding someone to raise a puppy. One of those
success stories is Coffee Creek Prison in
Oregon where prisoners have an opportunity to
raise a puppy. Of course, the prisoners must be
on their best behavior and the experience
promotes self esteem. This is an ultimate winwin
story, the prisoner puppy raisers improve
their self esteem and raise a dog who will
change a disabled person’s life for many years.
I love talking about LPCCI and CCI, so if you
would like a program for your club or you would
like to learn more about LPCCI, please contact
me at 209-847-8825. The district has two
LPCCI trustees, Don Bisbee in the San Joaquin
region, a new trustee, Tom Bauder, from the
Mountain Region. Also I am working on having
at least one trustee from each region. Between
all these folks we have someone who can make
a presentation.
Also, we are going to visit the Northwest Region
training center in Santa Rosa on November 15 th
for a graduation ceremony where those who
have just been in training for two weeks with
their new dog “officially” receive the dog from the
puppy raiser. If we get enough people to go
along, we can get a tour of the facility and a
demo of the training of the dogs. Please call me
if you are interested in joining us. ●
LEOs by Lion Jim Weaver
The Leo District 4-A1 officer training was held on
October 11 at the Boys and Girls Club in Merced.
Training was geared for presidents, vice presidents,
secretaries, treasurers and directors. Topics covered
leadership training and what Leos and Lions do
around the world. They had guest speakers, videos,
and roll playing. ●
Student Speakers Contest
Student speaker contest packets are available
for ordering at the MD4 office. Club secretaries
should have received a letter regarding ordering
and have returned the enclosed postcard. If
your secretary did not receive the letter, please
contact the office in Santa Barbara. If you are
having difficulty finding a school student speaker
program, check with 4H & FFA groups in the
area as well as boy scouts/girl scouts and
church groups. Now is the time to find your
target group and get packets. Topic: Water –
IN MEMORIAM:
Let us take a moment to remember the Lions in
WORK
WEEKEND:
By Lion Judith Alvarado, CP Board
●SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2008●
Camp Pacifica NEEDS YOUR HELP! The
summer cabins need to be winterized; a trench has to
be dug for the new water pipes. We are using a
backhoe for the majority of the work, but there’s
always things that are needed to help with a trench;
also there are the modesty panels to be put back up
by the bathrooms at the dining hall. There is
something for everyone to do who comes up to camp!
We will work on Saturday morning, break for lunch
(prepared by me) and then back to work in the afternoon.
If you can give us the weekend, we will find
something for you to do!
Please email me at jrscouters@yahoo.com with
numbers to cook for and what club you belong. Also
you can leave a message at (209) 769-6185. The
lunch cost is any amount donation you wish to give.
Please pass this along to any club members who
might be able to come. Also it is a good chance to
visit and serve with your fellow Lions as well as see
the camp.
Lions Day at the Races:
By RC Roy Patterson
Lions Day at the Races on September 14 was
attended by over 200 Lions and friends. Thank
you to all who took part. Honoraries who attended
were DG Pat Casey Gillum and Frank, PDG
Jim Loving and Lion Jill, PDG Dennis Noble and
Barbara, and VDG Francis Bognuda and Lion
Norma. Personally, I kept my losses low, enjoyed
a good sandwich and beer, while visiting with
Lions from West Point, Atwater-Winton,
Livingston, Modesto 500, South Stockton,
Stockton Delta, Stockton Pacifica, Linden and
Tracy Breakfast. I hope everyone enjoyed the
day as I did. (I thought part of the idea was to talk
to “nonLions” too! Ed.) ●
Membership Report – August:
Hello to all my fellow Lions –
I have received the LCI Cumulative Membership
Report for August, and we have some work to
do!
Total new members: 39 CONGRATULATIONS
Total transfers: 2 GREAT
Total dropped: 49 BOO!
Net loss for the month = 8
On Status Quo = None – Great
I realize that some members were dropped in
July (when dues were due) but did not hit this
report until August. BUT WE NEED TO KEEP
OUR FOCUS ON HAVING FUN AND PER-
FORMING MEANINGFUL PROJECTS SO
THAT OUR MEMBERSHIP WILL MEET
THIS YEARS GOAL OF NET INCREASE OF
63!
Thanks in advance for all your support and help.
Don’t forget the MERLO team for assistance.
PS. California in total has 127 clubs on Status
Quo, so I am VERY happy that we are not one of
them this month! California is down 235
members total so the other Governors have lots
to do too!
