FORMATION OF THE REGIMENT.<br />

Originates with the Gaelic Societies Delegates from Scottish So<br />

IT WAS in accordance with the fitness <strong>of</strong> things that the<br />

idea <strong>of</strong> a Highland regiment for Vancouver should orig<br />

inate in the Gaelic Society <strong>of</strong> that city. It was in that or<br />

ganization, devoted to the study and preservation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ancient language and literature which are so indissolubly<br />

connected with the Highlands <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, that a few en<br />

thusiastic Scots gave utterance to the thought that the time<br />

had arrived for the establishment in Vancouver <strong>of</strong> a regi<br />

ment <strong>of</strong> <strong>Highlanders</strong>. The suggestion was favourably<br />

received ,<br />

and requests were sent out to the Scottish so<br />

cieties in the city to appoint delegates to meet and confer<br />

on the matter. Accordingly, on May llth, 1909, a meeting<br />

was held in the St. Andrew s and Caledonian Societies<br />

rooms, when Mr. Alexander Morrison was elected chairman,<br />

and there were also present Dr. S. J. Tunstall, McC.<br />

Hutchinson, D. C. McGregor, C. W. Sarel, Alexander Sim,<br />

J. W. M anson, Major J. Duff Stuart, Capt. J. S. Tait, Capt.<br />

A. Rowan, Lieut. Jas. Sclater and Mr. A. McKinlay. Mr.<br />
