EARLY EVENTS<br />

There was a tremendous<br />

ovation as the Stars and Stripes were hoisted in front <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>of</strong>ficers box, while the <strong>Highlanders</strong> Band played the<br />

&quot;Star Spangled Banner.&quot; From one <strong>of</strong> the floats taking<br />

part in the procession, white doves, emblematic <strong>of</strong> Peace,<br />

were released, and flew around the great arena. From the<br />

moment <strong>of</strong> the arrival <strong>of</strong> the regiment when it was greeted<br />

by booming guns from the warships in the harbour till the<br />

re-embarkation for home, a large-hearted hospitality char<br />

acterized the occasion.<br />

An outstanding feature <strong>of</strong> 1912 was the review at Brock<br />

ton Point by the Governor-General, H. R. H. the Duke <strong>of</strong><br />

Connaught, on Thursday, September 19th. On this occasion<br />

the Duke presented the regiment with its colours, the gift<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Imperial Order Daughters <strong>of</strong> the Empire. When H.<br />

R. H. arrived on the previous day, he was met at the C. P.<br />

R. Station by a guard <strong>of</strong> honour supplied by the Sixth Regi<br />

ment, the Duke being Hon. Colonel. On arrival at the Court<br />

house, the Vice-regal party was greeted by a guard <strong>of</strong> hon<br />

our composed <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Seaforth</strong>s. Their smart<br />

precision was much admired by onlookers, and was evident<br />

ly appreciated by the Governor-General.<br />

But the review <strong>of</strong> the Vancouver garrison at Brockton<br />

Point on the following day proved the greatest event <strong>of</strong> the<br />

kind ever witnessed in British Columbia. The day was ideal.<br />

The honour <strong>of</strong> the right <strong>of</strong> the line was given to the Veterans<br />

and they were the first to be inspected. Then in succession<br />

came the Sixth Canadian Engineers <strong>of</strong> North Vancouver,<br />

the Sixth Regiment, the <strong>72nd</strong> <strong>Seaforth</strong> <strong>Highlanders</strong>, the<br />

Eighteenth Field Ambulance, the Boy Scouts and the Ca<br />

dets. The <strong>Seaforth</strong>s then formed three sides <strong>of</strong> a hollow<br />

square, and on the completion <strong>of</strong> the movement, the Chap<br />

lain <strong>of</strong> the regiment, the Rev. Dr. Mackay, stepped into<br />

the enclosure, while the drummers constructed a drum-head<br />

pulpit. Two stalwart <strong>Highlanders</strong> bearing the new colours<br />

then marched to the front, and the ceremony <strong>of</strong> consecrat-
