SCRUMPY VIEW
With the world in some form of melt
down, the past year has been another
tough one, with more venues and pubs
closing down, or dropping their live music
nights. Not forgetting the music
shops, studios and other related business
that have closed down, so where
will that leave live music in 2012
It may well be a busy year for sport and
the royals, but for the past few months
there was a lot of talk that there would
be fewer festivals, in 2012, due to all the
non music events! Recently we have
been getting information coming
through of some new festivals being
organised, we wish them luck in this
climate!!
From here 2012 looks another tough
one, and that is bad news for live music
or is it In past recessions music has
always done well, people need to be
entertained, so don’t be negative, get
out there, support and enjoy your live
music, if you don’t, then it will die!
MERRY CHRISTMAS
TO ALL OUR
READERS - MUSICIAN’S
and ADVERTISER’S
From all @ THE SCRUMPY
Take care and have a good
and safe one - enjoy
Its 90 years since the Poppy Appeal was started. 93 years since the end of the ‘War
to end all Wars’. Except it didn’t. And here we are nearly a century later with major
conflicts taking place in many parts of the World. Mostly, ordinary people have no
part or in the decision to go to war. They are caught up in World events and global
politics over which they have no control. And yes, there are times when a country
has to make a stand, when you have to fight to protect justice, dignity and
freedom. But no matter how just the cause - in war, everybody loses. And children
and the vulnerable lose the most.
This is the message of our song ‘Take me to Your leader’ which was written by our
lovely friend and mentor, Peter ‘Foz’ Foster. In this 90th anniversary of the poppy
appeal, we are donating all the profits from downloads and single CD sales equally
to the charities ‘War Child’ and ‘The Royal British Legion’.
Although ‘Take Me To Your Leader’ has been available on a couple of albums, it’s
the first time we’ve put it out as a download single but we thought it was something
we could do to support these two amazing charities.
Here’s the link:
If you’d lie to know more about the charities, here are their links :
ON THE BACK COVER
‘DRINK UP YER SCRUMPY’
The Cornish Wuzells are running a fund
raising campaign to get a statue of
Adge Cutler placed in his home town of
Nailsea. (Nailsea could do with something!
Not sure that a statue of Adge
would really be an improvement!! - Ed)
The band recently did a gig at the
Friendship Inn to kick start the proceedings
off. This was well supported and
the whole idea and project has been
well received. Since then the Cornish
Wurzells have written and released a
single to help raise funds for the project
and raise peoples awareness to the idea.
The single ‘Drink Up Yer Scrumpy’ is in
the Adge Cutler vein, which is available
to download on iTunes and on Amazon
mp3. The Cornish Wurzells have had a
brillant year, the photo on the back
cover is the band with Bradley Walsh at
December ‘11 5
Elstree Studios doing ‘Odd One In’ appearing
also with Peter ‘I really Am’
Andre back in June of this year.
They formed in 2006, based in Penzance,
they have since over the years
built up a big fan base in Devon and
Cornwall, and beyond.
3 DAFT MONKEYS
ANOTHER CORNISH TRIO
Someone once told me that in October,
once the holiday makers had gone and
winter started, the county of Cornwall
was the dead foot of the UK! Wet, Cold
and nobody about! This of course is not
true and anyone who knows the county
well, knows there is a busy music
scene, which covers all types of music.
One band who’s fan base gets bigger
every year is the Cornish trio 3 Daft
Monkeys, who combine rousing vocals,
frentic fiddling, rhythmical 12 string guitar,
dancing bass and foot drum.
Whether it’s Celtic, Balkan, Gypsy, Latino,
Cornish or other World Music you
are drawn to, all these influences and
more are in evidence within the 3 Daft
Monkeys Music. They are far too diverse
to be pigeonholed into one genre,
and possessing a sound completely impossible
to typecast into a particular
“Style”.
They creat a stunning blend of upbeat,
danceable music which despite all its
world influences remains undeniably
British.
WHAT A BRILLIANT DISCOVERY
EASY STARS -
“LONELY HEARTS DUB BAND”
Is a dub reggae tribute to The Beatles
album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club
Band’ by the Easy Star All Stars. I was
given this demo CD some time ago and
it appeared when I moved a cupboard!!
I don’t remember who gave it to me, or
sadly when, but on finding it, I put it in
the car pocket and after it’s first play on
the car stereo, I have not stopped playing
it! This Cd is brilliant, so not having
any more information I went into Google
for further details. This CD was released
on April 14th 2009, with the album lovingly
dedicated to Lucy Rice, a friend of
the band and the Mother of one of the
albums engineers, Victor Rice.
Reading the information from the Easy
Star web site, the tracks are performed
by some top names, it really is a great
album, I’m glad it has been found.
ON THE FRONT COVER
Mr Keep Calm, formerly of The Keeps,
(who have appeared way back on the
cover of The Scrumpy) Avatar and many
more bands based in the North west
before he moved down to Somerset.
As The Keeps (My former duo) he
gained lots of fans including Stuart
Maconie and founder member of the
La’s, Mike Badger among others and
played at various festivals and venues
across the UK.
Gary Said, “Years ago a friend and I
decided we were sick of the same old
Christmas songs. Every year many of
us, get sick to death of the same ones,
from Slade, Wizard, Wham etc...............
Many are mostly crappy boy bands and
one hit wonders make up the rest!!
There must be more songs out there!
So I looked and found that, yes indeed
there is, I found great songs by Ron
Sexsmith, The Flaming Lips and loads
more that hardly ever get a play around
Christmas time despite being every bit
as good as some of the usual's.
So I decided back in the days of The
Keeps to write a little EP, which we did,
and we did Ok with it. One song even
got played in Vietnam.
So this year I decided again, that I would
add to the list of undiscovered Christmas
classics (although yearly charttopper
would be preferable) and write
some more. The best Keeps song,
‘Christmas You & Me’ is included. It’s
available for pre-order from -
www.mrkeepcalm.bandcamp.com
And costs £4.00 for the album, 50p a
track for 8 songs. There’s also a secret
track for those who download the whole
album. A video is on YouTube to promote
and highlight the album and you
can find Mr Keep Calm on the following
sites Soundcloud, YouTube, Facebook,
Myspace, Twitter, Google and Bandcamp.
I recently completed a songwriting
project where every morning I took a
news headline from the BBC Red Button
on Monday mornings and wrote,
recorded and posted a song and video
by Wednesday afternoon (not working
on Tuesdays). The whole process from
the news headline to video posted was
10 hours for each song maximum. All
parts were played by myself and the
project was completely solo. The results
are on YouTube and Bandcamp.
During my spare time I am in the process
of making 2 albums, one
experimental,one more conventional
songs, to be released next year. I am
also currently assembling a band and
would love to hear musicians of all genres
and abilities”.
Sounds like Mr keep Calm is in for a
busy 2012...................
You can find out more on any of the
usual social networking sites.
HI - REMEMBER ME
Hi you guys - its James Bennett - just found
your fantastic site! As you know I have been
very active on the North Somerset music
scene for the past ten years, doing solo gigs,
playing guitar with some of my own bands
and playing bass (electric and upright) for
bands including ‘The Fallen Apples’,
‘Reoffender’, ‘The Ryan Inglis Band’ and
‘Skank Tank’. I’ve even been on the front
cover of your original magazine a few times
both under my own name and with the band
‘Elysium’ (although not for 6 years or so!)
I am sending this email to let you know
about a few of the bands I play with. First -
James Bennett - I regularly perform solo
sets, playing everything from Spanish / Classical
pieces to Paul Simon. For more info -
www.james-bennett.com
The Police ‘Cover-Up’ - This is a Sting &
Police tribute based in Weston-Super-Mare
covering the very best of Sting’s prolific song
writing career as both a solo artist and 1/3 of
Police. For more information go to -
www.thepolicecoverup.co.uk
‘The Mojo Cats’ - an exciting cocktail of
sounds ranging from Latin American to Sinatra
- swing and showcasing some of the
most talented musicians around.
www.mojocats.co.uk
‘Oblivion’ - A classic rock and heavy metal
covers band featuring the amazing and talented
Pete Sharp on lead vocals. With a set
ranging from Prince to Slipknot, there really
is something for everyone.
VAN & EQUIPMENT STOLEN
State of Undress that rocky rootsy fiddlesome
band have been having a real
roller coaster of a year. Loads of ups -
with amazing gigs right across the
country; a major down in the summer
when their fiddle player’s lovely wife
was ill, and now, just when they were
really back on the up with a great momentum
building for next year, they
have had another significant set back.
Their band van, together with their
sound equipment (PA and speakers),
several guitars and other equipment
has been stolen.
Charlie Rose, lead singer and one of the
writers with State of Undress, said:
“This is such a blow especially for Malcolm
our bass player. The band van
belongs to him, it’s a big white Mercedes
Sprinter (Reg R388 YTF) but all
customised inside. Malcolm had converted
it himself so that it could be used
as a camper van with sleeping areas
and cooking facilities but also seats for
all the band members and purpose built
storage for all the equipment. There was
an exact place for everything. We loved
it and we’ve had such brilliant times in
it. It’s taken us from Cornwall to Scotland
and from London to Ireland this
year”.
Malcolm Windett, bass player and song
writer, continued: “I’m gutted. The loss
of the van is bad enough but my guitars
are unique and very personal to me.
Each one has it’s own distinctive musical
personality. Anyone who plays an
instrument will understand how I’m
feeling”.
Fellow musicians are asked to keep a
look out for the guitars and other equipment
which may be offered for sale in
local shops or on e-bay. The Guitars are
very striking: an Alembic Elan 5 string
bass, a Washburn fretless bass and an
Ovation nylon strung acoustic guitar.
The other stolen equipment includes :
Two Mackie SM450s speakers plus
stands and a Yamaha digital desk; a
Paul Jones suitcase amp and extention
cabinet; a TC helicon vocal monitor; a
Boss pedal board and various pedals. A
selection of stage lighting and leads
were also taken.
State of Undress are not just a local
band, they are a professional touring
band who play all across the UK. In
December, they are due to play in London,
Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and
Wiltshire as well as their annual Christmas
show at The Regent Centre in
Christchurch - this may prove a little
difficult without their band transport.
Charlie Rose adds: “With petrol prices
the way they are, it’s just not cost effective
for us to travel separately in our
cars. Although the van and equipment
is insured, it will take months to sort out
everything. If anyone out there can help
us in the short term, we would be so
grateful”.
If anyone thinks they have seen the
bands van, their guitars or any other
equipment matching these descriptions
listed above and which belong to State
of Undress, please contact Dorset police
on 101 quoting case number T11C-
049743 and if anyone thinks they can
help the band in any other way please
contact them on 07971 472 768
